'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' cosplayOn April 6th, the website ComicBookMovie reported that the Planet of the Apes prequel Rise of the Apes was given a new name by 20th Century Fox.  Then the website /Film saw the news that same day and via their contacts with the studio, confirmed that indeed, Rise of the Apes is now titled Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

There, I hope they’re done.  This is what, their fourth name for the movie?  The evolution of the name of the movie has looked like this:

The above list of titles looks like a great evolutionary chart, where the subsequent title in the list incorporates much of the previous title.

Guesses are that the marketing department thought that the title had to reflect the franchises ongoing or related progression and retain the core of the franchises name.  Me, I’m thinking they could have taken the daring route and stuck with one of the cooler new movie titles.  But what do I know?  (You really don’t have to answer that.)

Personally, I felt like the 2nd or 3rd title options had a certain catch to them that made it unique yet still relatable.

It’s said that movie trailers with the new name will be coming out April 15th.  OK, so let’s see if this title sticks:

About Rise of the Planet of the Apes

…an origin story in the truest sense of the term. Set in present day San Francisco, the film is a reality-based cautionary tale, a science fiction/science fact blend, where man’s own experiments with genetic engineering lead to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy.

The screenplay is written by Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa.  The writers alone have my attention riveted on this new Planet of the Apes franchise move.  Amanda Silver, though her screenplay credits are more than ten years old, (I try not to reference material too long past for most resume looks, but in this case, it’s all I had) she’s credited with writing The Relic, Eye for an Eye and The Hand That Rocks the Cradle.  I remember having a boatload of fun when The Relic came out.   It would seem that Amanda and Rick are a team… he has the same credits.  Which makes sense… they’re married to each other.  That’s cool!

The cast  of Rise of the Planet of the Apes includes

  • James Franco (127 Hours, Eat Pray Love), a young, driven scientist,
  • John Lithgow (Leap Year), who plays Franco’s father, is also a scientist,
  • Don Cheadle (Iron Man 2) &
  • Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire); Brian Cox a villainous owner of a primate sanctuary; Andy Serkis, who plays Caesar, the chimp; David Oyelowo & Tom Felton.

Stick around and I’ll keep on top of any and most news regarding Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

You forgot the first two names, from back when news of the film first broke in late 2008:
Genesis: Apes
Planet of the Apes: Genesis
