Running: Use That Flashlight More Often At Night

Last night I decided to go out running around midnight.  I like running at night and I’ve only been running for a while.  (Started running in July.)

What I have learned is that when you run at night, you NEED to use your flashlight liberally.

I was looking to run my longest distance to date and to do it without stopping to walk.

About 8 minutes in, I came around a dark corner and went under the shadow of  tree.  (It was a full moon out.)  Never saw the pine cone.  Rolled my ankle hard and in the process of trying to catch myself, my left leg took the brunt of the stumble, catching the fall, but getting pretty low.

At first, I felt the pain in my ankle, but without breaking stride, I kept going and ran it off.  For the moment.  But what I did do was quick flash the road more often after that.

At around mile 2.5 is when my left thigh started to feel like a knot was forming.  By the time I pushed through, finishing my longest non-stop run to date, I KNEW I needed ice.  But I didn’t realize that my knee took a hit too.  By the time I was done icing my thigh, I couldn’t straighten my leg.

But I did run out my longest distance, no walking… even if I wanted to in spots.  3.12 miles in 38 minutes.  I was happy about that.  And for a runner, personal records are sometimes all it’s about.

Even if I’m hobbling around pretty stiffly today.

If you wonder how to calculate your minutes per mile in Excel, check that link!
