In horribly sad news today (9-11-11), 39-year-old Andy Whitfield died today, losing his battle to non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. he passed away in Sydney, Australia.
A statement released today by his wife, Vashti, said he was a “beautiful young warrior” who died on a “sunny morning” in the “arms of his loving wife.”
As we all know, Andy Whitfield played Spartacus in the Starz TV show Spartacus: Blood and Sand. He became very popular with his portrayal of the titular character and the series was successful enough to warrant a second season.
While prepping for a second season of the series, Andy became ill and Starz first stalled the preparation for season two, and then moved forward a prequel to the series, called Spartacus: Gods of the Arena.
As Andy continued his fight, he could not reprise the role of the titular character and Starz begrudgingly recast the role of Spartacus to Liam McIntyre.
Starz released this statement today on this sad event:
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our dear friend and colleague, Andy Whitfield. We were fortunate to have worked with Andy in Spartacus and came to know that the man who played a champion on-screen was also a champion in his own life. Andy was an inspiration to all of us as he faced this very personal battle with courage, strength and grace. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. He will live on in the hearts of his family, friends and fans.”

Rest in Peace good sir. Thank you Andy, for what you have brought the fans of the entertainment industry. You will be remembered for a very long time. Brusimm’s condolences go out to his family and friends.
