Serenity The Shepherds Tale

Serenity: The Shepherd’s Tale – We’ve been waiting for this since forever and a day… or at least since about 1/2 way through Joss Whedon’s sci fi series, Firefly.

The much anticipated Serenity comic, or graphic novel about Shepherd Book’s (Derrial Book) origins is still 6 months away, but Dark Horse Comics has provided a first look at artist Steve Morris’s cover to the graphic novel.  If you remember, we’re all mystified as to where Shepherd Book really comes from and if you dig farther into your memory, there’s a quote from a bounty hunter named Jubal Early, who after knocking out Book said “That ain’t no shepherd?”  What a way to drive us nuts with curiosity!

Serenity fans know he can handle himself in a scuffle, can handle firearms much better than any shepherd should, has a seemingly in-depth awareness of the criminal element and the potential of much more has always been just below the surface.

But take a look at the cover above…  The cover shows many things and what I see in it are the flames in the background that forge a person.  In the memory of those flames is Serenity.

Pictures are floating in front of Book.  Pictures of very hard and abusive times from his past.

He’s sitting on steps that come down from the flames and next to him is a simple bowl with what looks like a strand or two of a noodle hanging out.  Simple food, simple sustenance.  Under Book’s left foot is a snake he has trapped, or pinned.  Either way, he’s got it under control.  The sins or temptations of evils unknown, to us, maybe.

He’s dressed in a simple looking grey jumpsuit, hair braided back in cornrows with a bit of a knowing smirk or grin on his face.  Possibly having conquered his inner demons as he reflects on the memories of his past and the evil he has under foot.

Regardless of what lay behind him, it has made him who he is today, and he seems content… in this image.

I have a feeling there’s a very dark story inside this Shepherd’s Tale.  I could be wrong, but yet, I have a feeling we’re going to be in for one soul search of a story.  That’s what I take from the cover art for Serenity: The Shepherd’s Tale graphic novel from Dark Horse Comics.  It’s by Joss Whedon and scripted by Zack Whedon.

If you want to see the BIGGER version of the cover art, check out the article over on CBR, the guys that Dark Horse shared this exclusive Serenity Image with. (Click on the image once you get there.)

If you’re short of your Serenity fix, check out the Firefly store on AMAZON!  Where the episodes are actually in order!  (Which was weird…)
