Iron Man 3 MovieA few months ago we heard tale of Shane Black taking over the directorial duties for Iron Man 3, the third in a trilogy of the iconic Marvel Universe’s character, Iron Man. I’m sad to see that Jon Favreau has moved on, but we all need what we need and a third Iron Man movie was not part of his career path.

Be it as it may, now word on the street is that Shane Black is also looking to write the screenplay for the Robert Downey Jr. starring franchise. But Mr. Black won’t be alone in tackling the keyboard for this script. More words on the street indicate that Mr. Downey Jr. himself will also be contributing to the screenplay.

And of course the other bits of news on this project is that the next movie will be what they’re calling a self-contained set of single character stories where Iron Man will be up against real world villains.

That’s the latest news bite.

Real world villains? Does this mean that the story will be veering off from the direction that Favreau had set in the first two films, where we were treated with snippets of The Mandarin and his ‘ten rings’ gang? Yes, the ‘ten rings’ were in Iron Man 2. Do you remember the man who got Whiplash (Mickey Rourke) his passport papers? That was a ten rings member.

Well I hope they keep moving the story back in that direction and I hope that single character story mode might also still include The Black Widow!

But on another front, I want to take a look at the lineage of Mr. Shane Black.

As a director his credits include… he made his directorial debut with 2005’s Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, which starred Robert Downey Jr. & Val Kilmer. He also wrote the screenplay, based off of a novel.

As a writer, he has a bit more experience. On top of the KKBB noted above, his writing credentials include Lethal Weapon franchise, The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996), Last Action Hero (1993). Though KKBB was his last writing or directing gig, there seems to be a lot of faith in Shane Black’s ability to pull off a script and/or directing it.

According to IMDb, he has 6 projects in the pipe.

  • Of course, there’s Iron Man 3, but he also is noted for
  • Cold Warrior (dir), script phase;
  • Doc Savage (wr, Dir), script phase;
  • Lethal Weapon 5 (wr), optioned property;
  • The Monster Squad (wr) optioned property; &
  • Death Note (dir), script phase.

[wr: writer, dir: director]

I want to note that many of his writing credentials for Lethal Weapon indicated “writer (characters), except for the 1987’s Lethal Weapon, where he’s noted as the writer. I wonder out loud if he wrote the first, and only got credit for creating the characters in the other movies. I don’t know the answer to that one.

Robert Downey Jr.’s writing credits, surprisingly, include tracks to the soundtracks of a few of the movies he was in.

Sometimes you can look at the credentials of the creative force behind a movie and make an educated guess at how good or not it will be. I have a pretty decent track record doing this.

But this combination of talent behind Iron Man 3 has me more hopeful than confused. But I just don’t want to see a maniacal Tony Stark acting out along the lines of Mel Gibson’s character, Riggs. If that doesn’t happen, this could be a pretty fun movie, that as of right now, is due out in 2013.
