In what is a surprise move to me, it looks like Starz has cancelled Spartacus and the third and upcoming season will be its last.
Season three will be titled Spartacus: War of the Damned and will premiere on Starz in January of 2013. The reason for the cancellation, per creator Steven S. DeKnight, is that despite having a five to seven season story-arc in mind, he made these following two statements:
“Starz always does the unexpected.“ & that they wanted to end the show on a high note.
And despite all the hoopla over the last few years/seasons surrounding the series and how awesome it had been, they’re now saying that “the whole show was a huge risk from the start for Starz.”
But at least, as he put it, they didn’t want to just pull the plug, and hence, cheat the fans.
Ah, here comes the hoopla for 2013:
“This is by far the biggest season we’ve ever attempted.”
In season three, War of the Damned, the show will focus on the conflict between Spartacus and Marcus Crassus.
As far as I am concerned, this show was getting its legs under even more firmly than it already had from the first season, and with no statement about ratings or such, just a concern that the show wavered because Andy Whitfield passed, (R.I.P.), and that it was risky to move forward.
But they did and I don’t know about you, but I adapted rather nicely to Liam McIntyre taking over. It was slightly distracting at first, unlike the outright actress change they pulled for Naevia, which doesn’t work at all for me!
And to be honest, there’s nothing else that’s drawing me to Starz these days aside from Spartacus. At least that comes to mind right away. And I got to see & meet a truly awesome spirit in the form of Manu Bennett. Go to about two thirds down on this Comic-Con piece, where I talk about “Manu Bennett, the coolest guy around” and no, it didn’t have anything to do with all the revelry you see me partaking in!
And I find it odd… such an obscure reason for dropping a show, to go out on a high note. Eh.
I guess that’s that gang, the end of the third season will be the series finale of Spartacus on Starz.
Here’s a FIRST LOOK at Season three, which isn’t much more than a teaser, but…
If you’re interested, check out the interview with IGN and more oddly positive double-talk, where they are reminded this was the network’s best rated show, etc., etc..
If I didn’t know any better, with such a sudden change of mind, I’d guess something Holly-political just took place!
