Steven Seagal Lawman: Talk about an impulsive DVD purchase, but what the hell! Steven Seagal, the star of Under Siege, Half Past Dead and Today You Die is also a real life Chief Deputy Sheriff in the city of Jefferson Parish, Louisiana?!
I’ll buy that! They canceled Reno-911 and I could use the cop action. The 2-disc set was only $15 bucks and I was at Target anyway. Was it worth it, is this a joke? Read on…
Steven Seagal Lawman takes the COPS reality show genre to a new level. Of course the driving force is all Steven Seagal. The curiosity factor of how he’s going to play this fades out of mind within the first few minutes. The man’s seriously in complete control and an obvious no bulls**t’ veteran officer.
The series revolves around Seagal and four regular Jefferson Parish Sheriffs. Sure there’s some background smeg and trainers but the show stays focused on Seagal and his four man team throughout the season. That’s the difference Seagal brings to this format, that camaraderie that you find in his action films. Seagal is totally at ease and obviously knows how to improve on the law enforcement TV genre. Every episode he takes the time to include part of his private life or the time training his men. I admit that I fast-forwarded past two of these segments, but that’s the power of DVD! Use it!
The season contains 13 episodes. The run time is 20 min each. Some of the editing around the commercial breaks is noticeably redundant and some of the film stock varies between HD and Digital. The score is heavily influenced by Miami Vice and most of the action is filmed at night! Lawman really captures the darkness of Louisiana, and the officers all relate personal tales of the Katrina event. Every one of them could easily be in Seagal’s next film. The diversity reminded me of the film, The Predator.
Bonus features consist of extended personal segments. Some of my favorites were Seagal at the firing range and time at home with his awesome German (attack) Shepards. If you have any doubts that Seagal isn’t a cop this show will change that. Hell he’s a better cop then let’s say his last few films. He’s also one of the coolest dudes and handgun shooters I’ve ever seen.
Seagal Vision! Catch it! Is the DVD worthy, yep I’d give it a solid 9 out of 10!
