MTV is reporting that while filming in the Ognyanovo reservoir in Bulgaria for The Expendables 2, a scene with explosives went wrong and an accident occurred, killing one stuntman and injuring another. None of the stars were present for the filming of this particular scene. It was a second unit shoot.
MTV released a statement from Nu Image/Millennium Films:
“It is with great regret that we confirm this unfortunate accident. Our hearts go out to the families and those on the production affected by this tragedy. The filmmakers are working closely with the authorities in responding to and investigating this accident.”
The Expendables 2 is due out in August of 2012 and the cast includes Jason Statham, Bruce Willis, Liam Hemsworth, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Jean-Claude Van Damme & Chuck Norris.
Our thoughts go out to all involved.
Movie goers have become so accustomed to exciting scenes with speed, violence and explosions, that it’s common place to have them. I don’t think we ever really sit down and ponder just how dangerous explosive scenes are to film or how much planning or preparation goes into a shoot that will look exciting while no one gets hurt. I think we need to appreciate that hazards involved for the many folk involved while trying to create compelling content for fans.
