Feb 16, 2010: The CW announced today they renewed Supernatural, making it the 6th year it will be on the air. For Cinema Static, that wasn’t a big surprise being that it was reported back in mid-January that the word on the street was that the fantasy action TV series Supernatural was being renewed.
Originally, Eric Kripke only had a 5-year story arc in his head when he came to The CW with his idea, but between Kripke and McG’s production companies (Kripke Enterprises &Wonderland Sound and Vision) and the fantastic writing that’s come from Kripke for the 87 episodes he’s created so far, it’s amazing what they have done.
Considering that they almost weren’t renewed, but came back with budgetary restraints… Kripke and et al were forced to create a more character driven series this year. The smaller budget meant more close up shots, more implied special effects, less of the classic rock than we might have heard in previous seasons, fewer people in scenes. But have you noticed that this year? I have forgotten completely about it because I get pulled into the story. Once you’re absorbed, game over fellow viewers. You’re hooked.
The Winchester brothers drive off into a 6th season
Getting a 6th season opens up a whole new can of worms. Good worms that is. What will Eric Kripke do for a 6th season? Will he carry the Apocalypse story line into the next season? I don’t think so. It’s been his intention all along to wrap up the 5th year with this story-arc. But after dealing with the devil, what do the Winchester brothers have to deal with?
We’re learning an awful lot about the Winchester brothers, Sam (Jared Padalekci) and Dean (Jensen Ackles), from this season. Much of their past and their family tree has been delivered to us, actually letting us know how important these two brothers are to humanity itself!
.
I don’t think anything they’ll come up will suck, that’s for sure. They’ve done well with the stand-alone, off story-arc episodes this season so far. In fact, they’ve been hilarious and serious, all at once.
SUPERNATURAL "My Bloody Valentine" - Misha Collins as Castiel
So now that we get a 6th season, will Cas (Misha Collins) get his wings back? Will he stay on in the show. He’s an awesome, stoic faced side-kick… OK, he’s not really a side-kick, but you get what I mean!
So time will tell, but for now, the good news is that we get a 6th season of Supernatural. Hoo ya!

Disturbing (?) Update 2/17:
As I noted, this 6th season for Supernatural goes beyond the realm of what Eric Kripke had in mind. And it seems the 6th season won’t be a product from his mind!
Reports are saying that Eric Kripke will not be the showrunner for the renewed Supernatural. They say he needs to step down to work on his new shows that he’s developing for Warner Bros.
Filling in his shoes will be executive producer Sera Gamble. She’s been with the show since it’s inception, but my warm fuzzy is getting chilly. Eric has written 87 episodes of the show and Sera has written 21. Will she take over primary writing duties? I don’t know. She’s credited with writing the following episodes: The Song Remains the Same, The Curious Case of Dean Winchester, Good God Y’all, When the Levee Breaks, It’s a Terrible Life, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Are You There God, It’s Me, Dean Winchester.
So it doesn’t look as hopeless as it seems, but still, without Kripke’s daily input, I can now only hope the show retains the same feel. When the boys who took over the showrunning duties of Smallville stepped up a few years ago, they did just fine. I now sit, wait, and hope.
