The Syfy Channel‘s newest addition to their scheme of reality-based TV shows, Face Off, seemed to have been a hit for the network.

On Wednesday Face Off pulled in more than 1.4 million viewers.  Those numbers, for Syfy Channel, makes it the best premiere for a new reality series for the network in the key demographic of 18-49 yr-old viewers, pulling in almost 900k viewers in that demo.  At least the best premiere since Ghost Hunters in 2004.

This new show continues the momentum of good ratings for new shows from Syfy.  Being Human scored over two million viewers for its second episode last Monday, January 24.

I caught the last half of the show.  Yes, it felt like nothing new as they went through the judging gauntlet and we were presented with the drama of each contestant sweating it out as their work was picked over.  But the end product the contestants made were actually pretty neat and worth the watch.  Next week they’ll be body painting nude subjects.  I will have to tune in, for professional purposes of course!

Snippets from the press release:

Face Off is a competition/elimination series exploring the world of special-effects make-up artists and the unlimited imagination that allows them to create amazing works of living art.

The 12 Face Off artists will be whittled down week by week as they compete to outshine their competition. The winning SFX artist will receive $100,000 and a year’s supply of make up courtesy of Alcone.

Face Off continues with an all-new, one-hour episode next Wednesday, February 3 at 10:00PM. The remaining special effects make-up artists are challenged to transform nude models into living pieces of art. One of the world’s premier body painters, Filippo Ioco, is featured in the episode as an expert guest judge for the unconventional challenge which calls upon the contestants to draw upon such inspirations as the rainforest, the ocean, a waterfall or an abstract painting in order to bring striking and bold concepts to life.
