The Expanse is written by the writing team known as James S. A. Corey and it’s a multi-book series in the near (200 years) future where “humanity has colonized the solar system – Mars, the Moon, the Asteroid Belt and beyond – but the stars are still out of our reach.”
Detective Miller is a native of “the Asteroid Belt” between Mars and Jupiter and works for a corporate security force operating as the law in The Belt.
The story being presented in Syfy’s The Expanse, follows the case of a missing young woman who brings a hardened detective (Jane) and a rogue ship’s captain together in a race across the solar system to expose the greatest conspiracy in human history.
That rogue ship’s captain is named Holden, and if you like blunt and honest, you’ll love this character, if that’s how they portray him in the show.
The book series is fun and I’m presently reading the fourth book in the series, Cibola Burn, but don’t you dare jump ahead and look at it. And I’ve found that if you’ve read a book it sometimes can ruin the book or TV show to some degree.
On the bright side, having read the book, I don’t have to fret too much about watching yet one more show. But I will to check out what they’ve done to the story.
Below is the story from the book press and Syfy’s press release announcing the casting call and production of…

Jim Holden is XO of an ice miner making runs from the rings of Saturn to the mining stations of the Belt. When he and his crew stumble upon a derelict ship, The Scopuli, they find themselves in possession of a secret they never wanted. A secret that someone is willing to kill for – and kill on a scale unfathomable to Jim and his crew. War is brewing in the system unless he can find out who left the ship and why.
Detective Miller is looking for a girl. One girl in a system of billions, but her parents have money and money talks. When the trail leads him to The Scopuli and rebel sympathizer Holden, he realizes that this girl may be the key to everything.
