SYFY Picks Up Wrestling and Is Moving SGU, CAPRICA, SANCTUARY to Tuesdays

Yep… Michael Hinman over on Airlock Alpha caught my eye when he reported that Stargate Universe, Sanctuary and Caprica are looking to be moved by Syfy to Tuesday nights on the Syfy Channel.

The reason for this move is that World Wrestling Entertainment’s contract with MyNetworkTV ended. They’re were looking for a place for their Friday Night SmackDown and with Syfy picking up yet more wrestling, the logic goes that for Friday Night Wrestling to be on any other night might confuse the crap out of people.

This wrestling pick-up is a mixed bag of “what!?” news and good news. Sort of.

In picking up Friday Night SmackDown, Syfy will be letting their Tuesday night wrestling programming go and it’s presently being shopped out to other networks.

With our favorite shows like Stargate Universe, Sanctuary and Caprica headed to Tuesday nights, there’s a chance that the ratings will improve. But then again, by how much? On Tuesdays, our favorite shows will be up against some of the biggest powerhouse TV ratings getters there are on TV right now:

  • NCIS,
  • Dancing with the Stars,
  • American Idol &
  • Biggest Loser

With the Syfy shows slipping into Tuesdays, they might pickup some of the old wrestling fans and for some of us SMALLVILLE fans, this may free up this genre’s fans to head on over to The CW and maybe boost their ratings. No, I’m not holding my breath.

But with Syfy moving our “scripted dramas” over to Tuesday, this may make the ratings game even more of a challenge for these shows that were already struggling, regardless of recent one episode spikes.

Not to mention it is going to completely make my present Friday night viewing schedule null & void. WTF!? I was perfectly happy with wrestling being on Tuesdays and to wind my week down on Syfy. Why don’t they rename wrestling to Friday Night SmackDown on Tuesdays or Formerly Friday Night SmackDown SmacksDown Tuesdays or something like that?

Tuesday nights on BBC America is Survivors and at the moment Dr Who Reruns, so this is a real pain.

What exactly has wrestling got to do with sci fi? Apart from it is scripted and not real of course.

I am getting more and more annoyed with syfy channel, ghosthunters and wrestling and now it seems like a horror fest some weekends.

Maybe I should just bite the bullet, cancel my cable package and just watch the shows I want online, does anyone else think that the TV companies are actually slowly working towards pushing us all to the net?

My wife keeps on telling me we pay $60 a month for cable and all we watch is the news, Dr Who, SGU and Burn Notice.

Could I get a blu ray player that links to netflix and youtube, and have it pay for itself in 3 months?
