Syfy’s Popular reality TV series, Face Off, returns for its new season On Tuesday, August 21. Below I have a bit about the 3rd season premiere sneak peek, and a bit about a new contest for fans of Face Off! (Plus some preview pics from the upcoming episode.)
About Face Off
Face Off is a reality TV contest in the form of an elimination series that gives viewers a look at the world of special-effects make-up. Each week, contestants are given assignments and we get to watch the artists deploy their imaginative approach to creating incredible works of living art.
When they compete in each challenge, we watch them employ/incorporate various aspects of effects make-up, including
- prosthetic,
- 3-D design,
- animatronics,
- sculpting,
- eye enhancers,
- puppeteering,
- casting, and
- molding.

The judges are also experts from within the field. They are
- Glenn Hetrick: (The Hunger Games, Journey 2, Legion, Chronicles of Riddick),
- Ve Neill: (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, The Hunger Games, John Carter, Priest),
- Patrick Tatopoulos: (Silent Hill: Revelation, Total Recall, 2012, Underworld franchise, Resident Evil: Extinction., I am Legend, and many more hits).
As you can see, the judges are active in the industry. Not just name plates at a table. The show is hosted by the beautiful McKenzie Westmore, the daughter of Michael Westmore.
When it first premiered, I didn’t think I was impressed. But then I caught a few episodes and found myself riveted. To watch these artists crank out results in a short amount of time is pretty impressive. And you get an incredible behind-the-scenes look at how EFX artists tackle their jobs.
So yea… I enjoy the series.

Face Off Challenge
Fans can transform their face into a zombie, animal and other magical movie creatures using the Face Off Challenge App (below) or create their own homemade makeup face transformations . Fans submit their photos to enter the FANtastic Transformation of the week contest. Starting on August 28th, 2012 the photo with the most votes each week will appear during the Tuesday airing of Face Off. On October 10, 2012 Syfy judges will select one of the ultimate transformations from the winner of FANtastic Transformation of the week and send the winner on a Grand Prize trip to Los Angeles California on Halloween to see Face Off filmed Live!
