I’m stunned that the American Idol judges had to save Casey Abrams from being ejected from the show last night. (3-24-11) Just stunned.
Last year on American Idol, Adam Lambert seemed to be the man with the voice that could hit every note perfectly. He could belt it out or smoothly croon it. It all seemed near to perfect to me. He even adapted his look for each genre of song. So when Adam Lambert didn’t win the show I chalked it up to the conservative vote. I get that, I do.
But I’ve always said that America can get confused and sometimes tricked each week, depending on the songs given to the contestants. In fact I’m always nervous when America has the control of any reality competition.
It’s not necessarily America, but who it is that has the time to vote and what they may focus on. And this last week, it definitely wasn’t Abrams.
America can be a huge swing vote on Idol depending on the show and the viewers. And they’ve proven it many times when the runner-up goes on to have the more successful career. There are weeks I cringe at the song selection in American Idol. Slow melodies have their place, but on TV you need some form of energy to translate to a fun viewing experience. If a singer doesn’t pick a nice energetic song, they threaten their own survival in the show. When the show picks slow song themes for the night, it feels like it’s a crap-shoot as to who can pull the vote in. Or maybe the true focus of the fans come through. OR. Or fans are so nonplussed, some don’t necessarily feel motivated to vote. It could be any number of factors, but it sure makes for an inconsistent season sometimes.
But last night, when the judges had to use their ‘save’ to keep Casey Abrams from going home, I was, well, not surprised, but rather, I was glad they did. Yet the Seth Rogen look-a-like singer, though he might have appearance issues if you don’t like Seth Rogen, has a huge wealth of talent and he can really belt out a song.
