Cinema Static - TV News, Movie News and other Entertainment news and opinionI snagged some great TV news for fans of CSI’s Adam Rodriguez; news for Alan Tudyk on a TV show; and what I think is big news for genre fans, Farscape, starring the lost astronaut of Ben Browder, is coming to Blu-ray in a big way!

-

Adam Rodriguez Lands on A Dark Set

Fans of the CSI: Miami TV series all know who Adam Rodriguez is (the Eric Delko character) and now, fans will have a bit more of an eyeful of the man if you go see Christopher Nolan‘s The Dark Knight Rises.  (Some are calling it Batman 3)

News is that he’s joined the cast in what is referred to as a small role.

Rodriguez was also noted as having joined the movie Magic Mike… stay calm ladies… as a male stripper.  Yea, I bet that ‘s going over with some fans.  But what to take away from this is that Adam is getting out there and landing more and more roles.

Alan Tudyk’s New TV Show

Reminder:  If you’re an Alan Tudyk fan, he’s in the cast of ABC’s comedy, Suburgatory, a series about a man who takes his teenage daughter away from the city and into the suburbs.

Tudyk joins the cast of Jeremy Sisto, Jane Levy, Carly Chalkin, Rex Lee, Allie Grant, Cheryl Hines & Jay Mohr.

This is a movie review of the indie film, Tucker & Dale vs Evil, starring Tyler Labine (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) and Alan Tudyk (Transformers: Dark of the Moon).  It was produced by Eden Rock Media and distributed by Magnet Releasing.  It’s directed by Eli Craig.

Tyler Labine and Alan Tudyk in 'Tucker & Dale vs Evil'

I’m a huge Alan Tudyk fan.  I first saw him in Joss Whedon’s FireflySerenity and then in Dollhouse on TV and the latest project I’ve seen him in, Transformers 2.  I’m a fan of his acting versatility.  Hence I found the time to see this movie. I had high hopes for Tucker & Dale vs. Evil.  The trailer looked hilarious to me.

Tucker & Dale vs Evil is about comedic take on two hillbillies who go on a vacation and get caught up in a confusing scheme of murder/suicide with some teens on a weekend getaway.

'Transformers 3' Shockwave head shotThis is a spoiler-free movie review from Bruce Simmons of Transformers: Dark of the Moon, aka Transformers 3 or TF3.  This is a working man’s movie review where I don’t get special invites to sets or early screenings.  I go to the theater with you.  I experience it with you.

With that said…

This third installment of the Transformers film franchise was directed by Michael Bay and starred Shia LaBeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Josh Duhamel, John Turturro, Tyrese Gibson, Patrick Dempsey, Frances McDormand, Alan Tudyk, John Malkovich and a cadre of old and new faces in the rest of the cast.  It’s distributed by Paramount Pictures.

I watched it in 3D in XD large format at my local Century 20 movie theater.  It clocks in at 2 hours and 27 minutes, but it didn’t feel like it.

Initial Thoughts:

Transformers 3 was a well thought out Transformers story from both the human and robot sides of the movie.  It felt like the franchise had matured to this point in time. Points in the movie were pulled from the history of the franchise and expounded upon.  There was back-story to help present this movie and other details that didn’t seem to contradict anything from the previous two movies.  Plus, I think dads will love taking the kids to see the movie (I’ll explain later) and the spots of humor injected into the story-line are well placed and not over done. I think Kids will love it  .I think fans of the franchise will really enjoy it.

New Movies & TV on DVD and Blu-ray

The list of new DVD and Blu-ray releases this week tally in the mid-300′s.  Is that crazy or what?  Amongst the new discs coming out this week, the bigger names include Season of the Witch and Sucker Punch.  Older titled finally landing on Blu-ray isn’t huge, but there is Ron Howard’s Apollo 13 and Joss Whedon’s Serenity Blu-ray combo pack being released.

And yes, the highly anticipated release of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy is coming out on Blu-ray!

I’m amazed I got this out, even if it is a day later than usual!  I spent the weekend covering the NASCAR event at Sonoma as a press photographer and found myself pretty busy with that.  I had a great time and even got a hot-lap around the track from a professional driver.  (I now know how all my passengers feel!  Gads, my apologies to everyone!)

(*Being up front with you:  All links go to Amazon pages and products.)

Titles new to Blu-ray include

  • The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy (Extended Edition + Digital Copy) [Blu-ray] Starring Elijah Wood, Viggo Mortensen and Ian McKellen
  • Jumanji (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) starring Robin Williams
  • Zathura (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo)
  • Van Helsing [Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy] Starring Hugh Jackman and Richard Roxburgh
  • Apollo 13 [Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy] Starring Tom Hanks, Bill Paxton and Kevin Bacon
  • Serenity [Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy] Starring Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyk

Alan TudykFor the consummate Alan Tudyk fan, I’m betting you’d love to know that he has join the cast of the Timur Bekmambetov (9, Wanted; Upcoming: Apollo 18) directed & produced movie, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.  In the movie, Tudyk will be playing the character Stephen A. Douglas, a man with a Senate seat.

About Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter:

In the novel by Seth Grahame-Smith that this movie is based on, Alan Tudyk‘s character, Mr. Douglas, would seem to be in league with the vampires, who, in this reality, had a large role in the Civil War.

Other cast includes Benjamin Walker, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Dominic Cooper, Anthony Mackie and Robin McLeavy and the movie is due out June 22nd, 2012.

The movie summary goes as follows:

“President Lincoln’s mother is killed by a supernatural creature, which fuels his passion to crush vampires and their slave-owning helpers.”

Summer Glau and Nathan Fillion, two stars from 'Firefly' Series from Joss Whedon

A few weeks back Nathan Fillion had made a statement that amounted to what I could only surmise as a inner-secret wish but not something serious, when he said if he won the lottery, he’d buy the rights to Firefly.  The idea of Nathan Fillion buying the Firefly rights is a pretty exciting prospect.  In what I anticipated, there were a few others that showed a supportive mode of thought, a few other Firefly alumni, in both the showrunner and cast side, added to the hopes by saying that they support such a thought.

Fans went nuts.  Firefly fans are diehard Browncoats and any shred of hope is something that fans hang onto.  That’s why when they hear of something developing, they grasp that hope with every once of strength and not let go.  In fact some charge forward, hoping against the odds, that if they push this little snowball down the hill, it will roll, pick up some speed, some size, and become an unstoppable force.

Firefly fans are some of the best, most dedicated fans I think I’ve ever seen and I don’t blame them.

-

One fan group immediately started collecting pledges (not cash) for donations that would facilitate Nathan Fillion not having to win the lottery, but rather, fund his very idea of his being able to buy the rights.  But alas, some facts started to come to light about this dream and things started to slow down a bit and they’ve stopped actively collecting pledges.

-

The first bit of fact was that the idea that 20th Century Fox would actually sell the rights seemed far-fetched at best.  Would you sell a cash cow?  OK, it might not be a cash cow, put it is some stream of income somewhere, as networks continue to pay for the rights to air Firefly and people continue to purchase the series on DVD, where ever that money may go!

'Transformers 3 Dark of the Moon' movie logo

I’m confused by the latest swath of articles based on the latest news from director Michael Bay on Spoilers from Transformers 3 Dark of the Moon.

I’m confused because I’ve seen some of these Transformers 3 bits somewhere else more than a month or two ago!  But I can’t seem to find the first source.  Maybe Mr. Bay is just reiterating and everyone forgot he said most of these things already!

'Transformers 3' Director Michael Bay, actor Josh Duhamel and actress Rosie Huntington-Whiteley announce start the engines before the start of the Daytona 500

Ant Man by OverGround-EIC on Deviant Art

Originally published on 12-26-10, this article is updated with some factual notes at the end.

Some months ago the rumor started playing out that Alan Tudyk would be portraying Ant-Man…  to be honest, a few names were tossed out there to play Ant-Man in various projects, like Nathan Fillion.

If we look at Alan Tudyk’s IMDb profile, he only has three movies that are “in production:”  Conception, Strange Frame: Love & Sex & Transformers: Dark of the Moon.  If we look at Nathan Fillion’s IMDb profile, he has no movies under production but then again, he is busy with his popular ABC television series, Castle.

For now, again under IMDb, for the Edgar Wright written & directed Ant-Man movie, there is no cast listed.  None, nada!

Transformers 3

Transformers 3, Transformers Dark of the Moon promo art logo

I came across an old video that’s been out for a while showing some behind the scenes footage from Michael Bay’s latest franchise effort, Transformers 3, otherwise known as Transformers: Dark of the Moon.

In this Transformers 3 behind-the-scenes (BTS) clip, we see Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson, Shia LaBeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Bumblebee in alternate form and a few others running around trying to dodge what looks like the special effects crew trying to “off” them!  I am going to surmise the following plot points from this Michael Bay film, all gleaned from the sub five-minute video:

  • There will be shooting,
  • There will be paratroopers,
  • Paratroopers will be blowed up,
  • There are Autobots in their alternate forms,
  • There will be more shooting,
  • Things go boom,
  • Motor vehicles go flying after going boom,
  • There will be lots of shooting.
  • Sam Witwicky runs,
  • Carly (Sam’s girlfriend) runs too.
