american idol

American Idol 2012 logo

While I was watching the SF and NYG championship NFL, I was seeing that American Idol was going to start right after the game.  In the last half hour of the game, they had an American Idol countdown, where it looked like American Idol would start just a few minutes before 8 p.m..  (Here on the West Coast)

The game ended, then my local Fox Affiliate on COMCAST came on and announced that American Idol was going to start at 8:30 while this local hack of a sports broadcasting show called ‘Out of the INBOX‘ had a recap of the game I just spent a few hours watching.

Seriously???  My short-term recall is not that bad…  I do remember the game.

Here’s a quick little round up of a few casting pieces of news for The Vampire Diaries, Game of Thrones, CSI: Miami & Glee & American Idol!

The Vampire Diaries

Sebastian Roche in 24

Sebastian Roché is joining The Vampire Diaries as a vampire hunter… that ain’t good.  He usually always plays strong characters…  and this character seems to be going after Klaus.  The interesting part about Roche’s character, is that Klaus, who isn’t afraid of anyone, is afraid of this guy.

It sounds good.

Game of Thrones

Robert Pugh (The Ghost Writer) has been cast in the role of Craster.  Craster is called a shaky ally to the Night’s Watch gang.

Fox NetworkFox’s 2011 / 2012 fall TV season has some competitive shows in the line-up.  That despite they’re cancelling one of my favorite shows on me, Human Target.  But that’s how the cookie tends to crumble.  Sometimes the crumbs fall in the milk, sometimes the dog gets them off the floor!  Onward.

The 2011 /2012 TV season for Fox has some staples in the line-up like House, Glee, Bones, Fringe, American Idol & their venerable Sunday night fare of animation!  But there are also some new shows coming at us… like Terra Nova, Alcatraz & The Finder.

Check out the list for the upcoming 2011 fall TV season:

James Durbin on American Idol

James Durbin

When I saw that James Durbin was canned from the singing reality TV series, American Idol, I could only shake my head as I sit in shock that Haley Reinhart is still there, along with Scotty McCreery & Lauren Alaina.

When America votes, there are no shoe-ins and the ‘it’ that gets folks to vote confuses the crap out of me.  All I can say is that people are swayed by the moment and forget about what built to that moment.

If you’re one of the few who were also stunned, like much of the live American Idol audience was, I’m hoping you didn’t think that James was so awesome that he was safe… because you were sure that so many others were voting for him that you didn’t need to.

The coaches have all spilled praise upon praise on this kid.  Steven Tyler said he would do a song with him on stage, Randy Jackson has said repeatedly how brilliant it is when he brings it to the stage.

If you’re keeping on top of the latest trailers from Jon Favreau‘s latest movie project, Cowboys & Aliens, be apprised my dear reader, that the latest and greatest movie trailer, or TV spot will showing up will be during Thursday’s telecast of American Idol on Fox.

WonderCon Roberto Orci and Jon Favreau COWBOYS and ALIENS P4027139

In a sound-byte, I love how Jon Favreau explains why audiences are being drawn to Cowboys & Aliens… aside from the cast of Daniel Craig, Olivia Wilde and Harrison Ford that is:

“it’s one of the few films this summer that’s not a sequel, or a super hero film,…and also not in 3D.”

He specifically points out, as he did in the panel at WonderCon that it is not in 3D. He’s a man of the people, that’s for sure.

The inaugural Reality Rocks Expo is to reality TV like Comic-Con is to its fantasy/comic/sci fi genre entertainment segment.  If you’re a huge reality TV fan, I’m going to go out on a limb and say you just might love this event.

Folks appearing at the expo include guests like Nick Cannon, Adrianne Curry, Christopher Knight, DeAnna Pappas, Audrina Patridge, Eric Roberts, Karina Smirnoff, and more, from some of your favorite reality TV experiences like American Idol, Project Runway, The Real World, Survivor, The Amazing Race, and other like-shows.

You’ll get previews of new shows, meet & greets, panels and the like.

But more importantly, past dancers from the Fox series, So You Think You Can Dance (SYTYCD), will be making an appearance at the Reality Rocks Expo that’s taking place at the Los Angeles Convention Center April 9th & 10th.

NASCAR is in town (in Southern California) and this is their one time this year being in the area.  And when NASCAR is in town, Tinsel Town comes a callin’.  Or what some in the entertainment industry might call genre or title crossovers.

For Starters

No pun intended, really!  Molly Ringwald will be acting as the honorary starter for the NASCAR Nationwide Series Royal Purple 300 at Auto Club Speedway.

Fans might remember her from the teen classics of Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club or Pretty In Pink.  She’s presently starring in The Secret Life of the American Teenager.

American Idol

Trevor Bayne is enjoying is time in the limelight.  And that limelight included attending last Thursday night’s production of American Idol.  That was the vote counting episode where the judges had to use their ‘save’ to keep Casey Abrams from going home!

Trevor Bayne was sitting behind the judges.  Who, by the way, were his fans and wanted to meet him.  He’s pretty tickled about everything going down this year after snagging the Daytona 500 win!

'American Idol'I’m stunned that the American Idol judges had to save Casey Abrams from being ejected from the show last night. (3-24-11)  Just stunned.

Last year on American Idol, Adam Lambert seemed to be the man with the voice that could hit every note perfectly.  He could belt it out or smoothly croon it.  It all seemed near to perfect to me.  He even adapted his look for each genre of song.  So when Adam Lambert didn’t win the show I chalked it up to the conservative vote.  I get that, I do.

But I’ve always said that America can get confused and sometimes tricked each week, depending on the songs given to the contestants.  In fact I’m always nervous when America has the control of any reality competition.

It’s not necessarily America, but who it is that has the time to vote and what they may focus on.  And this last week, it definitely wasn’t Abrams.

America can be a huge swing vote on Idol depending on the show and the viewers.  And they’ve proven it many times when the runner-up goes on to have the more successful career.  There are weeks I cringe at the song selection in American Idol.  Slow melodies have their place, but on TV you need some form of energy to translate to a fun viewing experience.  If a singer doesn’t pick a nice energetic song, they threaten their own survival in the show.  When the show picks slow song themes for the night, it feels like it’s a crap-shoot as to who can pull the vote in.  Or maybe the true focus of the fans come through.  OR.  Or fans are so nonplussed, some don’t necessarily feel motivated to vote.   It could be any number of factors, but it sure makes for an inconsistent season sometimes.

But last night, when the judges had to use their ‘save’ to keep Casey Abrams from going home, I was, well, not surprised, but rather, I was glad they did.  Yet the Seth Rogen look-a-like singer, though he might have appearance issues if you don’t like Seth Rogen, has a huge wealth of talent and he can really belt out a song.

'American Idol' Judges

I have to say that for the last few seasons, I was on the American Idol bubble.  Tuned in for the season opening train wrecks and then returned intermittently for for the vote-off episodes.  Admittedly, it was getting old and predictable.  Though Simon called it as he saw it and gave pragmatic and dry recommendations, his style became predictable.  His leaving left a huge hole in the predictability of how well the show, American Idol, could go on.  But going on, it has.

'American Idol' Judge Jennifer Lopez

'American Idol' Judge Jennifer Lopez

When American Idol added Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler, I wasn’t sure.  But after watching the opening episodes that culled out the thousands of singers, choosing the top-24 singers, I’ve changed my mind about the show.  The mix of experience between Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler sitting at the judges table brings a great new light to the series.

Randy gets to shine more this season than the previous 9 seasons now that he’s the veteran of the panel.

Jennifer Lopez brings a fresh bit of experience, as she shares her own perspectives about these auditioning processes.  She’s also made me more of a fan of hers.  She looks absolutely marvelous.  If anything, I think her being on AI will definitely help build a fan base.

AMERICAN IDOL: Steven Tyler

'American Idol' judge Steven Tyler

Then there’s Steven ‘bleep’ Tyler.  He brings a completely fresh take on the show.  He lights up when the pretty girls show up, the singers pander to him.  He speaks his mind and we get a lot of those bleep covering American Idol logos.  But he brings to the stage a real world experience like Ms. Lopez, giving the contestants his take.  And unlike a comedienne who has no experience in the industry, (not taking away from Degeneres) when Mr. Tyler says something, it comes from a real perspective.

'American Idol' 2011

This year’s contestants bring an incredible breadth of talent to the table.  The judges have chosen the top-24, 12 women, 12 men to compete for the top title, but out of the last 60 to 100 contestants were mostly all talented beyond most.  Well, except for a few, like how one valued the idea of getting married in Las Vegas in the same chapel Britney Spears did…  over not staying in American Idol.  But her now husband is her enabler, so everyone seems happy now.  Then there were those few (Clint Jun Gamboa, Jordan Dorsey) who made it by doing everything they thought was necessary to make it to the final rounds, including being pretty cold to their fellow contestants, putting themselves above the others, as if they’re better.  They did what they needed to, to get where they are now… but they lost me as their fan, that’s for sure.
