Thoughts on Brusimm logo - Opinion on News and Current EventsI’m reading about a lawsuit where an individual is suing James Cameron because he says Avatar was his idea.  He argues that he presented his idea and was told it wouldn’t sell.  Then Avatar comes out.  Depending on how you look at this issue, some things seem interesting, the least of which is timing and such.

Seriously!  He wants credit for the Pocahontas retelling?  (And that was no disrespect towards Cameron at all.  Almost everything on screen could be called a retelling of something else these days.)  But deciding who’s right or wrong is not for this article.  But it did spark an interesting perspective on some things I’ve observed over the years.

Idea “thefts” or plagiarism happens everyday, everywhere.  Ideas are all out there for the taking.

I remember in my stand-up comedy days, I’d perform at a particular comedy house that had a rep for snagging original material from up and comers and selling them to the “name” comedians.  And I have to say, it’s a bit of an honor to watch some big name star spout your material on an HBO special!

I’ve also seen where ideas I’ve started here on Brusimm.com pop up on other sites after I’ve started them.  (I’m sure it was just great, comedic timing… and that’s totally possible.)

But it doesn’t really matter who comes up with what, when.  What does matter is who acts on them.  Or better yet, how one entity can spread or deploy the premise better than someone else!

Transformers 3Hey gang, as you all might be aware, the Transformers: Dark of the Moon (Transformers 3) DVD/Blu-ray went on sale today online and in stores and on your In-Demand rental menus.

It’s pretty exciting that Transformers: Dark of the Moon has finally come out for the home entertainment market.  Right?

You might want to put the brakes on before you head out to your local consumer electronics store to snatch up this newest release.

Wha?  Why in heck are you telling us to hold-our-britches Bruce?  That’s what I bet you’re asking right now.

Here’s what I’m thinking gang:

If all you want is the movie and only the movie in your possession, then go for it gang!  Have at and like me, enjoy!

A Pragmatic Observation

I always find it amazing that someone (actors) can verbally hope in an interview to be in a movie, and it makes news. And I want to work LucasFilm and win the lottery! We all have hopes, but anyone whose an actor can have some serious fun with their own hopes and watch it catch on as it weaves throughout the internet!

In April 2010, James Cameron said they’re looking to take the Avatar sequels to the ocean, and then September of 2010, I chronicled how Mr. Cameron started filming for Avatar 2 by taking his own little foray in a rented deep diving rig and heading to the Mariana Trench with his 3D film gear.

So when Michelle Rodriguez pipes up that even though it looked like her character died in the first movie, she’d be interested in returning to the Avatar franchise, I’m not surprised people are running with it. For her to be creating news (OK, re-news) that the sequel is headed to the ocean is just reiterating what was said nearly a year ago, but everyone is just reminding us about it.

Avatar Sequels

by on January 24, 2011

in Entertainment, movies

Avatar at Comic ConJames Cameron says that the sequels, yes, I said sequels, to Avatar are coming out.  If all goes according to plan, the sequels will be out in 2014 and 2015.

Right now he’s writing them and he is planning/hoping to film and post them at the same time!

As far as cast go, he says if you (a character/actor) survived the first one, there’s a good chance they’ll be in the Avatar sequels.

Movie Piracy on the web

For some, we tend to watch our entertainment legitimately where we actually pay for the services we use, as is legally intended.  For others they seem to feel as if it’s their god-given right to steal copyrighted content for their own purposes and have the most unique excuses for why.  It’s so sad, or bad that for Transformers 3 that’s coming out in July, there are already numerous results on the web for “free download” or “free movies” that want to lure  you into their tangled web of illicitly provided wares.  And for a movie that isn’t out yet.  I mean really?  The movie is still in post production.  But hey, this is the “wild west” era of the Internet we’re in, where everyone wants to offer and watch movies outside the normal processes that studios and distributors provide for the honest working Joe.

It’s the era, I’m sure.

Top Pirated TV Shows

As it goes, even TV shows have found themselves pirated right along with those “free movies” and such.  Of the shows available, ABC’s Lost was the most pirated show of 2010, followed by Heroes, Dexter, The Big Bang Theory and House rounding out the top-five pirated TV shows.

Other shows in the top-ten include How I Met Your Mother, 24, True Blood, Glee and Family Guy.

Top Pirated Movies

As far as movies go, success breeds success and that includes how the number of times a movie is pirated can mirror the actual success of a movie… sometimes.

In this case Avatar was the most pirated movie of 2010.  After that Kick-Ass, Inception, Shutter Island and Iron Man 2 were the top-five pirated movies.

Avatar made $2.8 billion at the box office.  Kick-Ass pulled in $96M worldwide.  Inception made $817M, Shutter Island … $294M.  If perchance pirated downloads equal potential box office interest, it seems that all of those “preview” thefts of movies could have hurt Kick-Ass at the box office.

The other movies that filled out the top-ten most pirated movies include Clash of the Titans, Green Zone, Sherlock Holmes, The Hurt Locker and Salt.

Pirating IS Theft

FBI Anti-Piracy Warning - no free movies these days

Yes, earlier I said preview.  I’ve seen the excuses and out-right self-deceptions where folks claim they’re stealing a movie to preview it to know if they want to go see it.  These silly statements make me laugh.  You steal… it’s as plain as that.  Just because you have access to a movie doesn’t mean it’s free.

When movies get hurt by theft it can impact various business entities and potential future projects associated with a franchise.  But hey, as long as the thieves get what they want, they seem to not care about the folks on the other end of the celluloid…  or these days, on the other side of their laptop monitor.

Can Piracy Be Quantified?

Despite all the claims about all the jobs and the millions of dollars that could be lost, it’s been determined that it is almost impossible to accurately quantify the economic impacts.

Though if you look at say one number, the 16.6 million illegal downloads of Avatar, that’s a mere $132 million lost to the distributors, studios and theaters if you estimate that at an average ticket price of $7.95.  Looking at Kick-Ass, it was downloaded 11.4M times.  That comes to $90.6M, which is on par with its worldwide box office of $96M.  In this case, Kick-Ass looks like it was hurt and hurt badly.

But the FBI had declared that in 2002 the industry lost up to $250B in funds, though that very report had no record of source data that can corroborate the stats.  Still, just looking at the two examples I’ve picked above, that’s a chunk of change.

Anti-Piracy Efforts In The Process

Earlier in 2010 an anti-piracy act was started that would give the Department of Justice the power to shut down websites that are deemed sites that help propagate the infringement of intellectual property on the web.  The act also enables the government to block U.S. access to overseas sites that get identified as sources of illegal content.

In late November in conjunction with Cyber Monday and the anti-piracy act, the feds shut down 82 domains that were online retailers of pirated products.

I Don’t Believe In Theft

Bart Simpson will not illegally download free movies

In case you had not noticed, I don’t approve of theft of copyrighted content.  When people steal things and leak a movie online, like even before it opens in theaters, it is things like that that motivate the authorities.

I don’t watch illegal content.  I believe in the system… or better yet, I would not like this kind of theft done to myself.  Think about this:  Say you worked for two years building something you wanted to sell to the public.  You depend on making enough money from it to live off of and reinvest the rest into your next project.  But you suddenly saw that your work started showing up on the internet and the number of copies of your product equaled about 30% of your net.  How would you feel?  If that 30% was the make-it or break-it difference for you, it would mean a lot.

Sure, the big studios make it just fine, but every now and then, these numbers can hurt the smaller folk and you don’t realized who it is gets stiffed.

But as more pirating takes place, I can only see it as a motivation for the $65 Billion industry known as Hollywood to actually apply some serious monetary pressure to the political system to motivate new laws and processes to be enacted that will make it just that more difficult for the regular guy to enjoy any kind of entertainment via the internet.

When you think most profitable movies ever, I bet the first few films that come to mind might be James Cameron‘s works of Avatar and Titanic.  But there are movies that spent a lot less to film and still cranked in the bucks.  If you dwell on it, Cameron dropped big bucks to make his movies.

  • The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King:  1008% return.
  • The Hangover (2009)  Return on investment: 1297%
  • Jaws (1975) Return on investment: 1308%
  • Star Wars (1977) Return on investment: 1938%
  • Slumdog Millionaire (2008) Return on investment: 2520%
  • E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) Return on investment: 3172%

FORBIDDEN PLANET with Leslie Nielsen and Anne Francis

FORBIDDEN PLANET with Leslie Nielsen and Anne Francis

I’ve been patiently waiting for more news on the classic sci fi movie remake of Forbidden Planet from J. Michael Straczynski (JMS).  It’s been pretty quiet on that front but I found an update of late on the project.

JMS noted that with James Cameron withdrawing from the project to focus on Avatar 2, Warner Bros had to start looking for a new director.  The hard part with the search is that they’re trying to find someone with the right amount of hard-core EFX background who also has an eye for characterization.

These two facets of the director, are what JMS says, will be what makes his remake script work.

JMS sets my mind at ease a bit and adds that Warner Bros does want to get the movie made and they consider it a tentpole movie for their house.  They just want to do it with the right director.

AVATAR new releases

This first half of 2010 saw Box Office revenue creep up 2.5% from the same time period last year.  This represented $5.35B being spent at the box office in the front half of the year.  But before studios can pat themselves on the back for getting this increase, it is definitely not the number of butts in a seat that increased.  Take a quick gander at the monetary records that Avatar set.  It’s destroying the box office and home sales records left and right, but by an estimated number of tickets sold Avatar sits in the all-time top 20.

Back in April, I questioned the premise on if 3D movies would impact the box office metrics measuring processes.  Catch this:  Of the $5B that the box office saw, $1.1B of it came from 3D movies, accounting for over 21% of the American box office tally.  In other words, charging more for 3D movies is paying off handsomely for the studios at the box office.  Yet as people see what movies come out at the theater in 3D, some may think they’ll get their hands on the 3D movie for the home version.  You might want to rethink your expectations on that count also!

Home 3D Entertainment Limitations

-

Despite this huge inflated push by someone thinking we’re going to eat up every angle of 3D there is to get, it looks like there may be some limitations being put on some 3D movies being released for the home.  At least as far as buying a television is concerned.
