Cinema Static - TV News, Movie News and other Entertainment OpinionAfter having seen both Battleship and The Avengers, there were a couple of things that stood out for me from both of these movies. In one movie, there was something about the cast that I found myself appreciating and in the other movie, there was something that caught my eye, that was one of many interesting tidbits from the movie.

In Battleship

In Battleship, one of the characters was a physical therapist for the disabled military veterans. They took a moment to scan a room of veterans and they stayed on one particular vet, who became part of the story.

It was double amputee by the name of Gregory D. Gadson, who played the big man, named Lieutenant Colonel Mick Canales.

Director Peter Berg reached out to him to cast him in the role.

I think it’s pretty awesome that Berg had a platform showing off the might of the U.S. military and then used that platform to also give some veterans screen time.

Very cool Mr. Berg.

In The Avengers

This really isn’t anything huge, and can’t really be called an easter egg in The Avengers, but here’s something that someone made note to me the other day:

As the closing scenes are being shown, we watch Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and Pepper Potts (Paltrow) going over plans for the new Stark hi-rise. The camera then pans back from the building.  If you recall, the logo on the side of the building did say Stark something or other, but as the battle ensued around the building, all the letters but one were torn off the side of the building.

Battleship review

I was almost talked out of going to see Battleship by some of what the mainstream critics were tossing out there.  I AM GLAD I DID NOT LISTEN!

Battleship stars Taylor Kitsch, Liam Neeson, and a bunch others in a tale of aliens coming to Earth with ill-gotten intent on their lizard-like alien minds.  But what they didn’t count on was encountering the U.S. Navy and Taylor Kitsch.  Bad, bad call aliens.  You should have read the script and turned around!

-

Battleship starts out with some scientists reaching out to another Earth-like planet.  What they get is a reply in the form of 5 ships coming to Earth to “visit.”

Kitsch plays an irresponsible/reckless Alex Hopper and his older brother, Naval Commander Stone Hopper is played by True Blood‘s Alexander Skarsgård.  Trying to set his younger brother straight, Stone enlists Alex in the Navy.

After establishing a few details of the story, we find ourselves watching the Navy rev up for the annual war games called RIMPAC.  We find Alex and his brother heading out to sea to partake in the exercise.  But alas, the aliens arrive, splashing down in the ocean nearby the naval exercises.

And then the fun commences from there as they surface and deploy an energy bubble around the region of the war games, trapping three Naval ships inside the bubble with them.

No, no, no… This is not a bash on Battleship piece. (One visitor didn’t read past the first paragraph on a previous piece and he tried to rip me a new one…  it was kind of cute.) But what this piece is, is a quick chat about a new viral website that the studio behind [...]

I came across a list of movies coming out this summer that was up on IMDb Pro and I thought I’d recompile it a bit…  The list is being put together with the presumption that you already know what movies you want to see and what you’re waiting for, as opposed to the end-all list [...]

Asylum Being Taken To Court by Universal Over ‘Battleship’

April 28, 2012

-Universal is taking Asylum to court for false advertising, copyright infringement and unfair competition.  And I say it’s about time. Universal is suing Global Asylum because Asylum has done it again.  It’s gone off and made a quickie knockoff movie to capitalize on a mainstream movie coming to theaters.  In this case, Asylum’s big mistake [...]
