This upcoming 2011 Thanksgiving holiday weekend, we have a few things going on around the house, much like I suspect you do. If you’re going to be taking it easy and just hanging out around your home, whether it’s quietly stashed away, or with loved ones, your TV is going to be staring at you… calling your name, saying ‘watch me,’ I have all kinds of TV series marathons or movie marathons going on.
I see The Walking Dead, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Battlestar Galactica, NCIS, & a Firefly* marathon… (*If you get Science Channel)
So if you pick up that remote and fire it off at your TV, here are a few things coming up for the Thanksgiving weekend… a TV marathon or two, so to speak.
And folks… to anyone coming by, whether you’re popping in once or a repeat offender (visitor) checking out this post, I want to say from the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone who comes by and visits my tiny little corner of the web.
Happy Thanksgiving and bless all of you and yours…
Now, back to my regularly scheduled snark and stuff…

Brusimm‘s Favorite Comic Con Photos
This year though there were some obvious costumes there were enjoyable to appreciate, there were also some good cosplay moves on the part of the wearers at Comic Con. The outfits represented some classic themes or desired themes. Check out this last post of Comic Con photos from this year:

Remember when I said it’s great when convention-goers embrace their body type and go with it? This was awesome perfection!

I noticed that for about eight hours after the series finale of Stargate Universe aired, Google Trends had the show pop up on their charts a few times. The show broke the top-10 search criteria a few times and even hit the top-5 a few more times throughout the night. Seems crazy that enough people can make the show crawl into the top-5 of web searches for Google but not have enough ratings to survive for a third season. But then again, the series finale of Stargate Universe pulled in just over 1.1 million viewers in the ‘Live + Same Day‘ TV ratings.
To be pragmatically honest about it, as a collective, fans didn’t make a strong enough statement with numbers of viewers to make the show worth it to the Syfy channel. I don’t mean that in a mean way. Please, read on to understand what I’m thinking.

I have been saddened by the gaping hole that Stargate Universe has left in my weekly TV viewing schedule. I’m frustrated but what can I do about it? New episodes of the show are gone from the Syfy channel, the Destiny was last seen hurtling through space in that translucent wavering tunnel of shimmering bluish FTL light, continuing on its journey without the fans.
But I have to ask myself how did this happen? How did this much beloved show meet its demise? The following is a hard but pragmatic look at how this happened to the fans of Stargate Universe. I take a step back and have scrutinized the system of TV entertainment itself. End, Disclaimer.

The Stargate franchise, after 14 years, has come to an end and from what I can see, various factors came into play that precipitated this event. I’m going to take some educated guesses and look at repercussions these factors had on the show that will be no more, on the Syfy channel.

Mike Dopud in ECHOES
In case you didn’t know, the man who plays Varro on Stargate Universe, Mike Dopud, is a busy man indeed. This is a Cinema Static Personality Focus piece.
In an interview over on the Baltimore Sun, Mike Dopud thought he was a shoe-in for the third season of Stargate Universe, but as any fan will attest to, the very last episode of this wonderful show will be airing May 9th on the Syfy channel. He was disappointed about the developments but then put the nose to the grindstone and got to work, but as you look at his career, he’s been a very busy man, period.
Right now he’s filming a pilot for Fox called Exit Strategy, starring alongside Ethan Hawke.
While doing that, he snuck away to film his part in the pilot for the project Echoes. That’s being prepared by SGU alumni creative team of Mark Savela and Ken Kabatoff.
But also of interest is that you can catch him in the upcoming movies on the silver screen, Mission Impossible 4, Rise of the Planet of the Apes & This Means War.
For the Battlestar Galactica diehard, he will be playing an integral role in the upcoming prequel/spinoff on the Syfy channel called Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome.
Like I said, the man is busy and that’s a great thing because we here at Cinema Static like him.
In that interview he touched on how Varro was becoming a trusted member on board the Destiny in SGU and that he hinted at Varro and TJ maybe getting together, at least if it had gone into a third season.

The following Cinema Static news bits touch on who was offered the lead in The Bourne Legacy; then who coughed up some cash for the rights to re-air Battlestar Galactica; casting bits for Batman 3 (As if you didn’t hear already!) and some bits (and some behind-the-scenes vids) on the TV series Wonder Woman. Let’s get to it, shall we?

Renner Offered ‘The Bourne Legacy‘ Lead
News on the street is that Jeremy Renner has been offered the lead role in Tony Gilroy’s next Bourne movie, titled The Bourne Legacy. No, Renner would not be replacing Damon but rather, playing another character of the same ilk or career path.
Of course with this offer coming from Universal, there are Renner’s upcoming movies that he still has to film. Renner is a busy guy…. he got done with Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol and is filming Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters presently and after that, he’s lined up to play Hawkeye in Joss Whedon‘s movie, The Avengers.
Well see how that pans out. I think Renner would be perfect for the role, but whether he can or will take it remains to be seen.

BBC America Snags Battlestar Galactica

Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome is the up and coming new prequel that will air on the Syfy channel that may just work a bit better than the previous prequel, Caprica, did. Blood and Chrome covers the era between the time Caprica touched on and the events that started up the Ronald D. Moore re-imagined BSG series. But hopefully this time around there will be less soap opera and more battle opera! Today, I decided to look around and see if there were any new developments and I didn’t find much on that front, but I did happen across some concept art that I missed when it first came out, plus I reiterate the press release on what the show will be about.
With that said, the era between Caprica and BSG is when Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome will take place, chronicling the adventures of the young William Adama during the era of the first Cylon War with the humans.

Though Caprica floundered in the ratings on the Syfy channel, it was a good story that focused on the development of the first Cylon. What bogged it down, in my opinion, was all the side-plots that tried to build up the surrounding intrigue of the series. Aside from the Cylon development we had organized crime, political intrigue, murder, mayhem and the usual dysfunctional families. But there was so much of the side-stories that it detracted from the original premise of the prequel. I forgot what it was supposed to be about. This isn’t a ding, but an opinion: It was like watching how the first Ford automobile got built, and then experiencing the drama behind how the lug-nuts and every other component were created. You forgot there was a car in the story. Or at least you became so caught up in the intrigue of the other stories that you forgot. The writing was wonderful, the cast, a dream for me. But it lost too many viewers to maintain viability in the eyes of the advertisers.
It didn’t hold viewers, as evidenced by comments around the web, was there wasn’t enough action to entice and thrill the TV audience with. If Blood and Chrome is done right, we’ll have our battle opera and have it peppered with decent underlying plots that advance the battle scenes accordingly.

The Battlestar Galactica prequel, Blood and Chrome, has put out a casting call for three of its main characters for the pilot TV movie. This is great news as we now have a wee bit more confirmation that it’s moving forward.
The three main roles will be the young William Adama, his communications officer Coker Fasjovik, and software genius Beka Kelly.
The following could be considered spoilers to the story, so proceed at your own risk:

CBS is doing it again, tackling, what is for me, one of my all-time favorite TV series of yesteryear, The Wild Wild West, which starred Robert Conrad & Ross Martin.
I was a huge, huge Robert Conrad fan from The Wild Wild West and Black Sheep Squadron TV series in the day and I miss characters like him as Secret Service Agent James T. West continually tackled two, three and more guys in scuffles and hid his toys and tools in nooks and crannies of his clothing, boots and hats. Dude, he was my role model in the day.
In the remake of this James Bond on horseback classic, CBS holds the rights and is now deploying them and aligning to powerhouse creators behind the title:
Naren Shankar (CSI, The Outer Limits, Farscape, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: The Next Generation) and
Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Carnivale, Roswell, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine & Star Trek: The Next Generation).

On the heels of announcing the harsh cut off of Caprica from the Syfy Channel Tuesday night schedule (Caprica Canceled), almost in the same breath… OK, the same day, the DVD release date for the Caprica season 1.5 DVD package was announced.
Season 1.5 of Caprica will be coming to DVD on December 21st, 2010.

Caprica was the prequel to Battlestar Galactica where it explained just how the mechanized toaster, I mean human assistants became self aware and how they decided to rise up against the humans. It takes place when the Cylons were invented, about fifty-eight years prior to the Battlestar Galactica plot takes place.

Back in July/August we chatted about the new Battlestar Galactica web series titled Blood & Chrome. Back then we mentioned it will be green-screened, and that all in all, the episodes will add up to the equivalent a two-hour pilot. We also mentioned that if the web series does well enough, that it could lead to a TV series.
The Syfy Channel has made the leap and made the official announcement about Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome. Except, rather than direct to web, it’s headed to a 2-hour TV pilot! Nice.
Check it out:
