beauty and the beast

Cinema Static Top-10 Movies & Box Office NumbersThis weekend, the new movies that hit the box office Friday populated the 1st, 3rd and 5th place spots in the chart of top-10 movies.

According to estimates, The Grey with Liam Neeson will be the lead money maker in the top-10 movies by the time the weekend is over, pulling in $20 million in it’s opening weekend, dominating the other movies by almost double.

Trailing The Grey is a movie in its second week in movie theaters, Underworld: Awakening, which  dropped by more than half from it’s opening weekend, will pull in an estimated $12.5M this weekend.

In third place in the charts is the new Katherine Heigl movie, One for the Money.  Apparently Heigl doesn’t have the draw they’d like her to have and the movie only pulled in $11.7M in ticket sales in its first weekend out. Hmm, no wonder she dropped the soundbite about wanting to return to Grey’s Anatomy.

Outside the top-3 in 4th, is Red Tails with Cuba Gooding Jr.Red Tails dropped nearly 50% from its opening weekend too and pulled in just over $10M.  But still hung on to a spot in the list of top-10 movies.

The new movie Man on the Ledge starring Sam Worthington seemed to have very little draw compared to the other top-4 movies, pulling in an estimated $8M.  Ouch.

Cinema Static Top-10 Movies & Box Office NumbersThis last weekend, to me, had some surprises as to what order the movies ranked out in the top-10 list of movies at the box office.

(1st) Screen Gems Underworld: Awakening was panned hard by critics across the board and even the star, Kate Beckinsale, was seemingly making excuses about how the role was a test or what not.  But it may seem that the franchise and a hot star decked out in a tight leather outfit may win out after all!  Underworld: Awakening took the first spot in the list of top-10 movies by pulling in an estimated $25M.

(2nd) Another new movie this weekend was 20th Century Fox’s Red Tails with Terrence Howard, showed up in the 2nd spot in the weekend’s list, having pulled in just over $19M.  The film looked like it had great visuals.

(3rd) Coming up third in its second week out, Universal Pictures Contraband, with Mark Wahlberg, pulled in ~$12M this weekend, bringing their overall gross to $46M

(4th) Warner Bros. Pictures Tom Hanks starrer, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, pulled in over $10M.

(5th) The other new movie this week, from Relativity Media, Haywire, had better reviews than Underworld, but pulled in fewer bucks, at around $9M this weekend from the box office.

Cinema Static Top-10 Movies & Box Office NumbersLast weekend consumers decided to give some power to he three new movies last weekend and put them in the top-4 spots amongst the top-10 movies at the box office last weekend.

Estimated numbers:

Number One Movie At the Box Office

Contraband showed that Mark Wahlberg can switch hats from his executive producer hat (Boardwalk Empire, Entourage) to his acting hat (The Other Guys, Date Night, The Lovely Bones) and still draw the fans in to the movie theater for his new movies.  He does have that pull on you and he can pull off an action role pretty awesomely.  (Is that even a word?  LOL)

Contraband movie poster

Contraband, from director Baltasar Kormákur (Inhale, A Little Trip to Heaven), pulled in just over $24M at the ticket window, averaging almost $8.5K per theater.  Yea…  the fans like Wahlberg!

Beauty and the Beast 3D movie poster

The 1991 animated classic, Beauty and the Beast, was re-released in 3D this last weekend and showed that classic movies that are close to the heart can still have an interesting draw when slapped out in the 3D theater…

Beauty and the Beast drew in almost $18.5M at the box office, which surprised me.  I was sure it would do OK, but I wasn’t sure it would be such the hit to be the No. 2 movie in America.

This brings the movies’ overall worldwide tally to $378M.

Sure, it’s a 3D release.  Sure, they’re just adding money to their coffers by taking advantage of your heart strings, but A: It worked, B: Animated features in 3D can be awesome.

Did any of my readers see this in 3D?  Was it any fun in 3D?

Hey, at the very least, you get to take your kids to the same movie and give them the experience you had once when you were young!  Right?

An update on Guillermo del Toro

Since I have become appreciative of Guillermo del Toro‘s work this last year, I’m always interested in things he’s working on.  The items that caught my eye that inspired this supposed short piece were notes on At the Mountains of Madness & Hellboy 3.

But first…

Pacific Rim

Pacific Rim movie mini teaser- Pacific Rim, his latest monster movie that I’ve been following, is due to start shooting five weeks from now.  Pacific Rim is basically a giant robot vs. giant monster kind of flick that will be starring Charlie Hunnam, Charlie Day, Idris Elba, Max Martini & Clifton Collins Jr..

Pacific Rim has already had it’s release date changed and is now due out in movie theaters in May of 2013.

-

Guillermo del Toro‘s other projects include exec producing Mama, starring Jessica Chastain & Dreamworks Animation’s Rise of the GuardiansRise of the Guardians is sort of like Joss Whedon’s The Avengers, except, well, it’s where Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, Jack Frost and the Sandman face off together against the Bogeyman.  The cast/voice power includes Hugh Jackman, Jude Law, Isla Fisher, Dakota Goyo, Chris Pine & Alec Baldwin.

Guillermo del Toro’s other efforts include having penned/contributed to the screenplays for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (Due out 2012) and The Hobbit: There and Back Again (2013).  Being directed by Peter Jackson, the cast includes Luke Evans, Hugo Weaving, Evangeline Lilly, Orlando Bloom, Elijah Wood plus the venerable character-actor Andy Serkis.

The Lion KingWith how well the rerelease of The Lion King did in 3D over this last month in the movie theater, I had said previously it will only be a matter of time.

The Lion King on Amazon

As it is, I’ve heard-tell that Top Gun is coming back to theaters in 3D and I’ve seen some folk say that this particular movie lends itself nicely to 3D.  (But I don’t know if they’re bribed studio shills or really fans of…)

But back when conjectured about the potential wave of new 3D movies being rereleases, I just didn’t realize how little time it would be before the onslaught.

Right now the plans are on the table from Disney to rerelease more animated features in 3D for public consumption.

Those 3D rereleases include Beauty and the Beast, Finding Nemo, Monsters, Inc. and The Little Mermaid in movie theaters nationwide.

The release dates for these movies are as follows:

· Beauty and the Beast – January 13, 2012
· Disney•Pixar’s Finding Nemo – September 14, 2012
· Disney•Pixar’s Monsters, Inc. – January 18, 2013
· Disney•Pixar’s Monsters University – June 21, 2013*
· The Little Mermaid – September 13, 2013

* Monsters University is the prequel to Monsters, Inc.

New DVD and Blu-ray Releases in movies, TV, kids & family

Looking over the new DVD & Blu-ray releases for November 23rd, 2010, there are over 250 new titles.  This week surprises me, being that the last few weeks have had some great titles.   This week it seems rather dull in the excitement category, but it could just be me.

This week is led by the Beauty and the Beast Two Disc Diamond Edition re-release of the classic animated story from Disney.  We also have The Expendables with Sylvester Stallone, and Eat Pray Love with Julia Roberts.

That’s really it for big titles but I’ll dig a bit deeper and see what other new DVD & Blu-ray releases might be coming along with these other titles.

In the upcoming weeks we have some great titles coming out… see below for those!
