The Shallows Review, Starring Blake Lively

The Shallows stars Blake Lively as Nancy Adams, in a surfer’s survivor movie where Nancy goes to a hidden cove to spend some quality surfing time. And it was not quite as bad as I thought it could have been!

As the film starts, while Nancy is in the water, she spots a dead humpback whale floating at the far side of the bay she’s surfing in. But with that whale, comes the predator that killed it, a great white shark.

Before she realizes it, she finds herself stuck on an outcropping of rocks, pinned to the spot by the circling hungry shark, who waits for her to get back in the water.

And the game of survival is afoot.

The Shallows, on Amazon.

This film is directed by horror/action man Jaume Collet-Serra, whose resume includes the Liam Neeson films Unknown (2011) & Non-Stop (2014). He also directed the most excellent freaky movie, Orphan (2009). And the CGI moments aren’t the best ever, but they get by in an acceptable fashion due to the speed of the scenes.

The Shallows is another ‘survivor of the fittest against all odds’ movie, where Lively’s character is a pretty intelligent person in a really bad situation.

Savages, a quick movie review

A quickie movie review from Brusimm: Savages comes at you right up front and sets the tone for what you can expect in the categories of gore and sex. (No… not at the same time.) It delivers a wonderful piece of action that’s capped off with an ending that should either satisfy you or confound you.

But all in all, it’s a good story told around a decent bit of action.

Blake Lively, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Taylor Kitsch in Savages

Savages, from the illustrious Oliver Stone, stars Blake Lively, Taylor Kitsch, & Aaron Johnson as pot growers who have taken a combination of smart schooling, a good sense for great pot, and a serious amount of field testing and put it to a profitable business. But Stone pits our indie pot growers against the drug cartel who wants in on their action. Other critical cast includes Benicio del Toro, John Travolta and Salma Hayek in a great new kind of role for her.

on Amazon: Savages, rent or purchase

Salma Hayek in SavagesThe movie starts out setting a tone of the adult nature of the story, from some torture scenes to “intimate” scenes that most parents won’t want to be explaining to their kids.

The story is about two guys who figure out how to grow the perfect pot and they go on to sell and market it. They grow their business to the point that the cartel wants in on their part of the world. But they decline. Politely.
