No spoilers in this front section of my Smallville recap and review:

It is here. The moment we’ve all been looking forward to and dreading, all at once. Through the highs and some of the lows, this is what it comes down to, the series finale of Smallville on The CW. The episode much heralded by many websites throughout the last few months.
This final episode of Smallville was 90% pretty damn good. The story took care of many of the open stories and we got to see many past characters/actors. We didn’t see Pete, (Sam Jones III) because ["In October 2009, he was arrested by the DEA on charges of drug trafficking, with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute." TMZ] His loss.

The story in this final episode was good enough to keep me from being sad that this was the last ever new episode of Smallville. The last twenty minutes had many recap images of the previous ten years and it was then I started realizing how sad I was becoming that this was it. No more upcoming scenes.
FROM HERE ON OUT, SPOILERS are in this Smallville recap and review:

This weeks’ episode of Smallville titled “Abandoned,” had a strong emotional familial message when Lois (Erica Durance) found and watched video tapes of her mother, Ella, who had died of cancer. Her mom was played by Teri Hatcher and to see the woman talking to her daugher across the years via video brought to light an aspect of life when people have lost their parents at an early age and live with at hole in their hearts. It was touching.
Lois was then sparked to help Clark (Tom Welling) touch base with his own digital father in the fortress of solitude. She ticked him off at first but then later it/the fortress/Jor-El played a message from his real parents to Clark, played by Julian Sands and Helen Slater.

Here goes a 30-read episode recap of the Smallville episode titled “Isis.”
Clark (Tom Welling) decides to tell Lois (Erica Durance) that he’s “The Blur.”
Oliver (Justin Hartley) is embracing his dual role of hero and millionaire.
Lois gets possessed by Isis, looking for her long dead love.
Cat Grant (Keri Lynn Pratt) is very confused, thinking Lois is The Blur. (Is she annoying or what?)
Clark and Lois/Isis get into it.

The 10th season premiere of Smallville opens with Clark falling off the building after banishing Zod, with the blue kryptonite knife sticking out of his chest. Clark (Tom Welling) hits the ground unconscious and while Lois is crying over him, he wakes up in a green field… in memory lane and then he finds himself talking to his dad, Jor-El. He then see’s an outline of what looks like Lex, then he wakes up after Lois (Erica Durance) pulls the knife out of his chest. When Clark comes to, Lois runs off and hides… not wanting him to know she knows his secret. What? A double-ended set of secrets?
Chloe (Allison Mack) is dealing with the disappearance of Oliver (Justin Hartley) when Clark shows up, but in a spate of illogical writing, Chloe says nothing about Oliver disappearing. Then later, in the usual, non-communicative mode she’s been in over the last season, she finds herself Dr. Doom’s helmet and dons it. (I know she’s not going to be on the show full time and I’m glad for it… I’m tired of the secretive mode she’s been in.)
Oliver is being beaten for information by a new bad guy. Anyone catch his name yet? I didn’t.

This Friday’s (4/16/10) episode of Smallville is titled “Upgrade” and we’ll be seeing more of Brain Austin Green this week as he takes on the mantle of Metallo once again! Check out the press release for the upcoming episode and some pictures after that!
BRIAN AUSTIN GREEN RETURNS AS METALLO AND CLARK IS INFECTED WITH RED KRYPTONITE — Zod (Callum Blue) continues to pose as “The Blur” and asks Lois (Erica Durance) to investigate one of Tess’ (Cassidy Freeman) secret labs. An explosion rocks the lab, and Lois is rescued by John Corben (guest star Brian Austin Green) who was a subject of multiple experiments. While investigating the explosion, Clark (Tom Welling) is exposed to red kryptonite. And infected Clark takes Zod to the Fortress. Tess turns to Chloe (Allison Mack) for help and they send in Corben to stop Clark from revealing all his secrets. Mike Rohl directed the episode written by Andrew Landis & Julia Swift (#3X5268).

"Checkmate" -- Tom Welling as Clark Kent in SMALLVILLE, on The CW Network. Photo: Michael Courtney/The CW
When Smallville’s episode titled “Checkmate” opened, I found the stop / slow motion panels to be interesting. I think they were well used up front in the teaser and thankfully, we weren’t treated to them throughout the episode. We were dealt more stop-motion / comic panels later on near the end of “Checkmate” and again, I think well used, and not over-used.
As ar as the story goes, Tess Mercer (Cassidy Freemen) plays bait to lure the Green Arrow into Checkmate’s clutches, because for some reason, Checkmate finds it necessary to drug and abduct new recruits more compelling than actually asking them.

First off, we get to see Emilie Ullerup on Smallville, playing Cat Grant in Friday’s episode. This will be her first TV appearance since her demise on Syfy’s Sanctuary.
2nd, we’ve got big things coming our way Friday… with the much anticipated … well wait,
3rd, I’ve got a first look pic at Julian Sands portraying Jor-El later this season. I’d usually stick a 2nd pic in after the break, but for those who are avoiding any kind of spoilers, I thought I’d stuff it in here:

Before I go any further, I need to say this season has been going like gang busters with all kinds of characters gracing the “pages” of Smallville. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say they were parading as many DC characters as possible across the screen before the end of the series. That’s what I would do if I thought the end was near. But keep in mind, episodes are written and filmed long before ratings are recognized… and you can’t blame them for taking this approach… if that was what they were doing.
But is it really the last season Smallville? Hang on. More on that later.
After the break, there may be what’s considered light Smallville spoilers so if you don’t like having the surprise taken from your experience, or you’re a time-shifted viewer (DVR junkie!) then you may want to hold off on the rest of this article after the break.
You’ve been warned!
