Consumer news, Consumer alerts and a Consumer's opinionUpdated below on 9/26/12 with a new price comparison.

Today I found a fascinating disparity in my perception of Walgreen’s.  I had always “presumed” that Walgreen’s had some pretty good prices.  Because of this perception, I never did any price checking on the place.  I just trusted.

Hence, I went blindly, guided by marketing.  Marketing designed to “help” me think that way.

Here’s my short tale of the CFL bulb.

Over the last few years, I have been buying CFL light bulbs from Walgreen’s.  I had bought a few Walgreen’s brand CFL’s but the odd part was that they were burning out pretty quickly.  I thought these things were supposed to last a long time?

So today I was in my local Menlo Park Ace Hardware store snagging myself a new CFL for my outdoor garage light.  I just paid $5.49 for the bad boy and it’s awesome, since these 100w output lights only burn about 29w of power. I can feel the electricity bill dwindling at a grindingly slow rate!

Right after I was in the downtown Menlo Park Ace Hardware store, I had opportunity to visit the Walgreen’s across the street.  I was roaming the store looking for something and had headed up the aisle with light bulbs.  I don’t need no stinkin’ light bulbs.  I just got one across the… WHOA!

I passed by the exact same light bulb I just bought in Ace.  There, it cost $5.49.  In Walgreen’s it cost $9.49!

I was really surprised by the huge price difference, but there ya have it.

CFL‘s (Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs) are supposed to be the most innovative use of electricity to date.  They last forever and cost less to run.  That in theory, is supposed to save you money.

That is, unless you purchase them from Walgreen’s.

I snagged a few boxes of the 4-pack CFL’s from Walgreen’s about 6 months ago.  I felt pretty good about myself!  I’m doing my part and saving money.  Woo-hoo!  … Or not.   And with Walgreen’s price, it seemed good.

Today, my 2nd CFL bulb burned out.
