chris hemsworth

This movie review starts with a benign sort of no-spoiler take, but I do start flinging spoilers out there about halfway down the article. Don’t worry. I warn you before I spout.

Marvel’s Thor Ragnarok is a different kind of Marvel film, peppered with some classic rock, family issues, believing in your own power and what it means to have a home. If you like the humor in the Marvel films, and you like the Thor film franchise, I do believe you will love this film beyond all compare! If not, no worries, I think you will still feel like you did not waste your money!

Imprisoned on the other side of the universe, the mighty Thor finds himself in a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against the Hulk, his former ally and fellow Avenger. Thor’s quest for survival leads him in a race against time to prevent the all-powerful Hela from destroying his home world and the Asgardian civilization.

Chris Hemsworth Films.

Marvel took a chance on relatively new to the realm of tent-pole movies with director Taika Waititi whose resume includes Hunt for the Wilderpeople & What We Do In The Shadows.  But Waititi stood boldly in the shoes he had to fill, considering rumors out there say that he started the rumor that the film is only 90 minutes long! Yep, very daring soul. The film had the usual sense of humor we see in Marvel films, but it could almost be considered too much of a good thing, where many of the characters had the same sense of humor. Which is odd at best. As far as seriousness goes, this film definitely stands on the other end of the spectrum from Civil War for sure.

The cast includes Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Idris Elba, Jeff Goldblum, Tessa Thompson, Karl Urban, Mark Ruffalo, Anthony Hopkins and Benedict Cumberbatch. (Check out below in my spoilers section for some secret cameos)

Oh, where do I start?

Hemsworth demonstrates just how good of a bad day Thor can have. Be prepared because Hemsworth is “rebooting” Thor into a slightly more humorous sort of character, since he and some fans were a bit frustrated with the older, more serious version of Thor in the last few films. Though I have enjoyed the character through the previous films because when he did pop up some humor, it was grand, compared to his serious god-of-thunder mode he usually exudes.

Hiddleston gives us yet another classic Loki, god of mischief show. Though I can’t put my finger on it, something was missing from Loki’s presence and I’m not sure what. It was almost as if some of his classic flair was gone. Whether this was intentional or something the director instilled, I’m not sure.

Cate Blanchett is a wonderfully insidious evil god that’s almost fun to watch. She puts on a good show when she kicks ass, and has the ‘tude to back it up.

Hulk’s part in the film, where Thor is confronting Hulk in a gladiatorial setting on the planet Sakaar, comes from the Planet Hulk comic story arc. Since at this time Marvel can’t have a solo Hulk film they’re doing the next best thing and have included him in this movie. In Hulk’s role, we learn that it’s been two years since we saw him take off in the Quinjet at the end of Age of Ultron. And we’ve learned a thing or two new about Hulk/Banner. One being that he’s been Hulk for this entire time.

Hulk is fierce, but oddly, well, funny at times too. Almost like he’s the comic relief at times. And to be honest, there are some amazingly funny moments with him, especially in act three when Banner… well… you’ll see. But it is a gem.

I always enjoy Idris Elba and Karl Urban in almost anything they do. Elba was the classic Heimdall but he was pushed to use the big ‘ol key of a sword and though it was Karl Urban, I had to stare to make sure it was Urban.

I like this new hero Valkyrie, played wonderfully by Tessa Thompson. Boy, can Valkyrie drink!

Marvel Movies

So like I said, the humor is very well timed and delivered, which is something that DC/WB has yet to totally pull off. But there was almost too much of it. Unless that’s what they’re shooting for, a more comedic, not take ourselves too seriously kind of heroes.

But there are a few things that bother me.

Following could be considered light Thor: Ragnarok spoilers:

How can our God of Thunder go toe-to-toe with a god, and still be taken down by a stun device? Then again, we saw human sedatives take him down in the first Thor film too. I’m confused a little, but I’m letting the tone of the humor take the helm for now.)

How is it Loki can switch intentions so so quickly? One moment he’s helping, the next he’s hindering, then the moment after that, he’s helping again.

We’ve all seen the previews, right? With that said, I do love when he learns that he’s the God of Thunder, not the “God of Hammers!” Boom! But I am going to miss his hammer because I loved that humming whine the hammer gave off when it flew. And it came back, and sought out his companion, Thor. Sniff…

I’m not happy about his comrades getting killed off so easily, just to wipe the slate clean for Thor to start over. These were childhood friends of Thor’s! (See below.)

And that Thor: Ragnarok mid-credits scene is something. And yes, it’s what you think. (See below)

These are serious Thor: Ragnarok Spoilers …

(Just go see the movie and be done with it! Right?)
