cinematic titanic

Cinematic Titanic, from the creators of MST3K

In this newest chapter of Cinematic Titanic destruction, they’ve chosen the 1968 movie, War of the Insects to riff on, live.  (War of the Insects AKA, Genocide.  On IMDb, it got a 4 rating.  That IS bad!  Wow!)  This live performance was shot in front of a live audience at Pepito’s Parkway Theater in Minneapolis, MN.  And this is my DVD review, from Cinema Static on Brusimm.com.

As the Cinematic Titanic DVD starts, we see the introduction of the riffing squad to the theater audience: Trace Beaulieu, J. Elvis Weinstein, Mary Jo Pehl, Frank Conniff & Joel Hodgson.  (Yes, the old MST3K gang!)

Cinematic Titanic, Live, and the countdown and theme commenced… to Genocide…  mental genocide that is!

Cinematic Titanic War of the InsectsThe bugs shall inherit the earth!

Or so says Annabelle, the hottest, the sexiest, and by far the craziest psycho blonde chick to hit Japan since WWII. Deeply embittered about the whole man’s-inhumanity-to-man thing, she enacts a diabolical plot to unleash a swarm of mutant insects on the world that will destroy all living creatures except creepy crawlers.

Ensnared in all this madness is a philandering island-hopping bug collector and his compliant and slightly pregnant wife, a humorless doctor from the mainland, and a United States airman named Charlie, whose way of starting a conversation is to hysterically scream “Genocide!” and then go off his rocker like the dedicated military professional he is.

If you want to watch a story where everybody gets their nuclear holocaust on in the grand tradition of radioactive Japanese monster movies, this is the film for you!

The movie opens to a rising cloud from an atomic bomb explosion and the gang chimes in:  {Michele Bachmann’s first day as president.}  That got a big laugh from the audience.

A scene that’s showing the bottom of a surf pounded cliff, {As you can see, anywhere you want to jump will do the trick.}

Cinematic Titanic - Danger on Tiki Island - DVD

This DVD movie review is for Cinematic Titanic Live: Danger on Tiki Island. Cinematic Titanic is the next chapter of the MST3K gang and Live: Danger on Tiki Island is their latest release.  The franchise is going happily along at full-steam just like they used to and you get exactly what you would expect from the MST3K alumni, but just a bit more updated!

This DVD is a live riff performance and having a live audience in the DVD product is a brilliant idea. It’s like having an honest laugh track from an audience appreciating the moment with you rather than a canned laugh track.   It helps connect you to the funny moments that you find funny.  It’s great to hear people laugh at things you find funny (and not at you).  It cements the connection you know you have with that unseen audience just out of camera range.   Plus I seriously hate laugh tracks that try to convince me something is supposed to be funny. Do networks think we’re so stupid we need to be told when something is funny?

The Alien Factor Riffed by "Cinematic Titanic"

After receiving my latest promotional DVD for review from Cinematic Titanic, I sadly had to wait a bit before watching it, but once I did, I was both repulsed and yet entertained.  Yea yea, I’ll explain.

I just got done watching live-riffed DVD version of The Alien FactorThe Alien Factor is another movie that makes you say wow, out loud.  Wow, someone actually made this?  Wow, someone actually distributed it?  But it’s possible that making this movie was a shrewd business move by the ensemble of misguided creators and actors.  They knew that with some time and patience, their product would become a riff-target of the creators of Mystery Science Theater, now calling themselves Cinematic Titanic.

Do you remember Mystery Science Theater 3000? Otherwise affectionately known as MST3K?  Ever find yourself yearning for the riffing to start again?  It’s time to sit up and pay attention.  The original gang that brought you MST3K have rebanded together into their newest riffing project called Cinematic Titanic.

MST3K: Mike and Tom Servo and Crow

The gang that brought you Tom Servo, Crow, Gypsy and all our favorites have come back together and are well on their way to riffing fame once again.  Thank god!

In the 11 years that is on the air, from their premiere on The Comedy Channel to its final 3 years on the  Sci-Fi Channel,  MST3K characters sat silhoutted in front of a movie screen and ripped the fools… I mean victims during the movie of choice, and oh, what sweet movies they ripped.

“Independent Pictures, making movies you’ve never heard of, for 40 years!” (Riff on the production company who made the victim film)
