Redbox hit a personal milestone recently by having rented their one billionth movie out.

The movie that busted the one billion rental mark was Clash of the Titans and it was rented out from a Redbox kiosk in Tampa, FL.  I wonder if that person got a prize or something?  (I wonder if Warner Bros would want to use that for their home-sales marketing campaign?)

Regardless, Redbox is celebrating with everyone by having a “Thanks a Billion” celebration.  Check out the press snippet:

“The nationwide event thanks redbox renters with a free one-night movie rental and chances to win premium prizes. Throughout the month of September, eligible redbox renters can enter the unique DVD code found on their redbox rental at www.redbox.com/thanks to receive a promotional code good for a free, one-night rental. Renters also will be entered to win the “Thanks a Billion” grand prize – a choice between a trip to the People’s Choice Awards® or a Sony® Home Entertainment Theatre System. The nationwide “Thanks a Billion” celebration runs from Sept. 1 to Sept. 30, 2010. Log on to redbox.com/thanks for complete rules and details*, as well as complete odds of winning and prize descriptions. “

Clash of the Titans with Sam Worthington

If you were not quite willing to go to the theater and see “Clash of the Titans” starring Sam Worthington, in the theaters, you weren’t alone.  Despite the movie making over $163 million at the boxoffice, the movie is charging hard in the home sales and rental realm, as THR is reporting it.

It cranked out the 2nd highest Blu-ray share of new releases, just behind “Avatar.”

“Clash of the Titans” also ranked No. 1 in select rental charts.  The trippy part is that it cranked out the No. 1 spot without the help of any rental kiosk’s or Netflix.  It will be available via those outlets within a month.

Green Lantern

If you were a fan of the Clash of the Titans movie and you just happen to be a fan of Green Lantern and the upcoming Green Lantern movie, you just might be in the best of both worlds.

The news on the street is that in the Blu-ray version of Clash of the Titans, will have a some sort of sneak peek from the Green Lantern movie!

Of course, I wonder how long before someone rips the preview go the internet.  I’m also wonder if they took a clue from ABC’s Lost?  Remember they held a contest where a few hundred folks won a USB stick with a preview of the upcoming (present) season?  It’s been said that the studios expected someone to help the preview go viral, and in my opinion, was a smart method of spending marketing dollars.  I’m guessing it’s the same with Green Lantern.

Movie MarketingHave you ever wondered what studios spend on marketing movies to sway you to spend your money on their movies in the theaters?  Hollywood spends around $4 billion per year marketing to you and the movie goer in the United States spends almost $10 billion a year at the box office.

It seems simple enough to advertise a movie, yet advertising is designed through various factors of psychological marketing to seem appealing to some part of your mental makeup.  Whether it be through the use of colors, familiar or inspiring music (Like how Clash of the Titans ads sucked me in with their awesome music) or familiar themes in commercials, where product ads appeal to staying in touch with friends and family.

Elements of Marketing a Movie

All the elements of marketing come from years of study, learning what works with people on the psychological level.  I studied marketing to understand how to get my real estate website off the ground and through various techniques, it took less than a year to get it to the #1 spot in my field in less than a year.  But that was a combination of marketing and applicable SEO. (Search Engine Optimization.)

Opening Movies for Friday

This week sees Date Night, The Runaways and Ca$h opening up in theaters on Friday, April 9th, 2010.

That means that Clash of the Titans may see a bit of competition… if the box office numbers don’t drop off like a rock for it! (I say that because I’m confused. Folks I know are mostly wishing they could get their 2 hours back after seeing Clash… Rotten Tomatoes has a 69% approval bar but only after 35 votes has an average rating of 5.9. After 6,188 votes on IMDb, it has a 6.7 average rating! Ouch! I guess we’ll see if the new films have any clout to take Clash down with!)

Date Night

Starring Steve Carell (The Office, The 40 Year Old Virgin, Little Miss Sunshine), Tina Fey (Mean Girls, 30 Rock), Mila Kunis (The Book of Eli, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Family Guy ) & Mark Wahlberg (The Lovely Bones, The Departed, Shooter, Entourage) and directed by Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum I & II).

Synopsis: It’s a case of mistaken identity that turns a couple’s attempt at a glamorous and romantic evening into something more than they bargained for!

Last year we started hearing about more and more 3D movies coming to the screen.  I swear, it seemed like once everyone got a hold of the idea that James Cameron was doing 3D, the entire industry started wagging their tongues and running after the gravy train that passed them by.  The problem with the chase of the 3D gravy train is that everyone was making their projects 3D, after the fact. James Cameron shot Avatar in 3D.  Shooting in 3D versus post-processing for 3D is MASSIVE difference in the end result and all anyone is going to do to the market with their post-processed crap is hurt the potential for the 3D market.

And because of that difference, I wish studios would quit giving us 3D that’s applied after the fact.  Joss Whedon’s project, The Cabin in the Woods, was put off a year so they can apply 3D after the fact.  W* T* F*!? (And as we see, that decision has doomed the movie’s release, so far)

Finally, Clash of the Titans arrives.  That’s a bit of sad news for me. I absolutely love the trailers that have been coming out for that movie.  Other flicks include Leaves of Grass & Why Did I Get Married Too.
