Consumer Alert from Consumer-Bits:

As is the nature of some “folk” who like to take advantage of the latest trend, so too are they taking advantage of the Usama bin Laden situation.

The FBI itself has announced a consumer alert warning the public that there are a flurry of emails and Facebook and Twitter links and such purporting to show either images or video of the situation related to bin Laden’s death.

Yet the links and such have destructive computer viruses associated with them on the other side.

“This malicious software, or “malware,” can embed itself in computers and spread to users’ contact lists, thereby infecting the systems of associates, friends, and family members. These viruses are often programmed to steal your personally identifiable information.”

With that, I am going to reiterate a few warnings, suggestions and some common sense practice about dealing with computer viruses.

In my life, I try to use common sense when doing things.  I try not to do 100 mph down a city street.  I try not to wield a 12-inch knife on my belt when walking onto school property, and I definitely don’t use a gun-shaped cigarette lighter in a bank.

I also try not to hang out with friends that do that.

It would seem though that some don’t have the same sense of preventative logic that I do.

On March 11th, a woman walked into a Wells Fargo Bank in Los Altos and while in the process of withdrawing a fair amount of funds from the bank, had placed her cigarette lighter on the window counter.  The only bad thing about that is that the lighter looked like a gun.

For Those Who Go Around Train Crossing Guards

The other day, a bicyclist was killed while crossing some train tracks in San Jose, CA.  He was killed by a train. It seems that he tried going around the traffic gates that come down on the streets and sidewalks. The northbound train had passed, and I guess he thought he knew better and went.
