Brusimm Cinema Static TV NewsThough it may take six months to actually come to a conclusion, the U.S. Supreme Court is actually pondering the idea if censoring, to some degree, is even worth the effort in this day and age of cable TV and time-shifted viewing.

-

The FCC is a powerful entity whose biggest, arch nemesis, Howard Stern, has been on Sirius XM satellite radio for the last few years… though Howard Stern is coming to America’s Got Talent.

But all joking aside, the FCC is becoming an antiquated entity with the rules it is enforcing and maybe the money spent there can be placed like say, into education programs so more teachers don’t lose their jobs?

Look, if the Nielsen Ratings org can adapt to streaming entertainment in their metrics, sooner or later the advertisers will embrace it more… seeing as how adverstisers spend nearly $10 billion per season on ads!

-

Everyone behind the TV industry has been rather slow to adapt to what is evolving as far as watching TV goes, but if you think about it, TV is no longer about sitting down at 8pm to catch a TV show.  Today, “TV” is about when you’ll pull up your favorite show or on what device you might watch it.

Advertisers still base their funding decisions on live+7 TV ratings.  That’s counting who watches a TV show live, then they also take into account viewership for the next 7 days.  But like I noted, TV is no longer just, well, on TV any more.  It’s all over the place.   It’s on our phones, our computers, in our cars, it’s at the gas stations, at sporting venues and what not.

So when the Supreme Court starts pondering the idea of why worry about censoring time-shifted TV viewing, you know we’re starting to take a step in the modern era.

Brusimm Cinema Static TV NewsThis upcoming 2011 Thanksgiving holiday weekend, we have a few things going on around the house, much like I suspect you do.  If you’re going to be taking it easy and just hanging out around your home, whether it’s quietly stashed away, or with loved ones, your TV is going to be staring at you… calling your name, saying ‘watch me,’ I have all kinds of TV series marathons or movie marathons going on.

I see The Walking Dead, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Battlestar Galactica, NCIS, & a Firefly* marathon…  (*If you get Science Channel)

So if you pick up that remote and fire it off at your TV, here are a few things coming up for the Thanksgiving weekend… a TV marathon or two, so to speak.

And folks…  to anyone coming by, whether you’re popping in once or a repeat offender (visitor) checking out this post, I want to say from the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone who comes by and visits my tiny little corner of the web.

Happy Thanksgiving and bless all of you and yours…

Now, back to my regularly scheduled snark and stuff…

Shemar Moore, Paget Brewster and Rachel Nichols in Criminal Minds

It is definitely good to be Shemar Moore, who plays Derek Morgan in the CBS hit crime-drama, Criminal Minds.  It was TV Guide that reported that Shemar Moore is returning to the show and has closed a new deal that has doubled his salary on the show.  DOUBLED!

As it stands right now, everyone but Thomas Gibson has re-upped their contracts for Criminal Minds.

I’d worry about such a huge pay raise.  That kind of change, even if the fans and the actor think its warranted, could become a contention point for cost of production down the road, if the franchise ever gets on shaky ground.  I’m not expecting that, but it definitely could be the case.

I’ve always had an uneducated guess that spin-offs are cheaper versions of the original that can be used as leverage against the first show, if negotiations got tricky!  But that’s just me and my paranoid business-minded thoughts!

Criminal Minds Suspect Behaviour show logoIn the latest episode of Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior, I was a bit confused.  The energy or ebb of the episode felt disjointed to me.    In the episode, Mick gets taunted by a serial sniper while the team worked on closing in on the sniper.  But during the course of the episode, weird, disjointed moments or conversation came sliding out of the episode, just out of the blue at times.

As one quick example, an out of the blue conversation teases about Cooper (Forest Whitaker) possibly having been a minister.  Odd bits of other sentences came out of the episode that just seemed distracting.

Was it me, or did anyone else notice this?  I mean, really, your team member is feeling down, so you take some Kali sticks to him?  And that instantly solves his doggy-downer mood?

Don’t get me wrong gang, I love Forest Whitaker and I want to see Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior succeed, but I’m worried that there’s some canned and forced writing going on as we find ourselves looking at each team member in different episodes.

If you read my stuff, you know it’s always a warning sign for me when a new show shoves character histories on you in the first episode.  This seems to be a different tract, where they’re doing the same thing, but using an episode per character to show us something about them…  instead of pummeling us all at once in a single episode.

I’ll always maintain that a well written series will slowly and quietly introduce us to the characters past in bits and pieces.  Not wholesale.  I hope I’m wrong, but is this a sign?  Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior is doing well in the ratings, so I’m not worried, too much…  yet.
