It is with a saddened heart that I must report that David Poole succumbed to a heart attack at his home Tuesday.
He was in his 13th year of covering NASCAR.
I’ve had opportunity to talk with David on several occasions because he took the time for the little guy. We started exchanging emails and then as I pestered the crap out of him with questions, I asked if I could interview him. Without hesitation, he said sure, and gave me his home phone number. He was my first NASCAR interview. (After the break)
He could be harsh but only if you were on the other side of the argument because once he made his mind up, he dug in and never wavered unless you could downright prove to him where he was being silly. I NEVER came at David with the “I’m right” perspective, because I knew what was in store for me. I approached him with a “What about this angle” question… that way, I avoided that sharp wit and keen edge, and got his inner workings on why not.
Regardless, whenever I had a question or curiosity, he always had the time. I tried not to abuse what I felt was a privilege. Farewell buddy. I’ll miss our intermittent chats and your perspectives.
Thank you for your opinions week in and week out. Thank you for your level headed approach, no matter how bull-headed you were about some of them. LOL. Just thank you.
I will miss you David. Everyone will miss you David. Tomorrow’s SIRIUS Satellite Radio program, The Morning Drive will be very different. No fault to anyone else, but that bit of spark David brought to the air will be gone. It will be a difficult 4 hours but I hope all listeners can see their way to make it a celebration of what he brought to the industry, the air (satellite) waves and the Internet.
RIP David and my heart felt condolences go out to his family and friends.
There’s more info over on the paper / website he worked for, ThatsRacin.
The interview I produced, follows the break. That, plus the raw material, that he later said we shouldn’t print, is a precious gem I will cherish forever. Of course I will never divest what he said, that he later thought on and said, “Maybe we better not say that… strike that if you don’t mind.”
