Now that Cinemax’s Transporter series is building its cast, they’ve added a few well known names to the fray of the ensemble of the series that is based on the film franchise of the same name.
Delphine Chanéac, whom Americans were introduced to in the slightly uncomfortable yet well written sci fi movie Splice as the genetic creature of focus, will be joining the Transporter cast as the mysterious character known as Olivia.
But I did mention an alumni. Alumni of what? Of the film franchise!
Over the months I’ve been seeing a lot of angst, politically and racially about the plot of Robert Rodriguez‘s movie Machete. It’s been questioned if it advocates race wars, or if it’s mexploitation or what have you. You might as well start griping about French films that hire French actors like Delphine Chaneac while you’re at it, or any film depicting a male committing violence… or female induced ass-kicking. WTH is the point of this focus on Machete? Maybe it’s just an easy target to latch onto with it’s recent media surge.
Machete is a movie that started out as a fake movie trailer in the 2007 shed-blood movie Grindhouse and there was enough interest in it to move forward with a real movie. That means people were interested in seeing it and all Robert Rodriguez did is go with it. In so doing, he hired people to fill the roles that he extrapolated from his fake trailer. People he knows who could do the job.
Splicemovie review: If you’re a science fiction fan looking for an action oriented movie, you won’t be happy. If you’re coming into this film looking for a well made character driven story, with character driven reactions that has a bit of punch in the last 1/3 of the movie, you will be happy you checked out Splice.
This is the spoiler-free review:
First… for those of you thinking that from the previews, this looks like 1995′s Species, good thought but you’re totally wrong. Sure, it sounds like Species because someone builds something from a biological building block and let’s it grow and it gets out of hand but this is a totally different story about the creation and it’s creators. In Species, they get a mysterious message from space and the dumb butts actually grow it. In Splice, Dren (played well by Delphine Chaneac) is created from hard word and over zealous goals and missed opportunities.
Splice is about 2 scientists who tinker with animal DNA and when they get tired of following the rules, they add a little human DNA to the mix, which stirs things up! The experiment creates Dren. (Drenolution!) Delphine Chanéac will play the adult version of Dren as she stars alongside Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley. Keep reading on for some personal info on Delphine, a video interview and a few movie trailers of Splice. [UPDATE 6/4/10: After checking out Dephine's info here, go check out my movie review of Splice!]
Baby Dren in Splice
At first Dren is a wee bit of a cute little scared creature but then evolves into a beautiful human-chimera.
The older, matured Dren in Splice
As she grows, her bonds with her creators are strong, but then the bond turns deadly. Delphine Chanéac plays the grown version of Dren and will give U.S. denizens their first real look at Delphine, even though she’s been in the entertainment business since she’s been 15 years old.
This Friday, June 4th, the opening movie that seems to be highly anticipated is the sci-fi movie Splice with Adrien Brody. The tee-shirt you see me wearing initially confused people when I started wearing it back in February, but as more ads for Splice came out, and they kept adding more stages of her development in the TV ads, they caught on. The word you can’t quite make out says “Drenolution.” Other movies coming out this upcoming weekend are Valhalla Rising, the comedy Get Him to the Greek with Russel Brand, Ondine, with the venerable Colin Farrell, Killers with Ashton Kutcher, Marmaduke, voiced by Owen Wilson and [Rec] 2 hits video on demand.

Opening Movies for Friday, June 4th
• Splice
Splice with Delphine Chaneac as Dren
Elsa and Clive, two young rebellious scientists, defy legal and ethical boundaries and forge ahead with a dangerous experiment: splicing together human and animal DNA to create a new organism named “Dren.”
Splice stars Adrien Brody, Sarah Polley and Delphine Chanéac as the ill-fated Dren. (I’m presuming ill-fated. Most genetically / artificially created creatures usually get the short end of the stick!) Splice is directed by Vincenzo Natali (Tideland, Ginger Snaps).
