Halo Reach Brick Steel Spartan Action Figure from McFarlane Toys

Halo tends to blow the doors off of some various statistics with every release that Bungie has set down.  The Halo: Reach video game is no different.

Since its release, after merely one week of being on the market Halo: Reach recorded 98 million player games were recorded.  From those 98 million players games,

  • 953 years were spent in match-made games while
  • 1,365 years were spent in campaign mode.

That’s over 2,000 years of game play in a mere week! And through it all, a mere 4.6 million files were downloaded.

Spike 2010 SCREAM AWARDS

The Spike TV SCREAM Awards is an event that honors the  best in different categories of entertainment.  The nominees that are selected for the different categories of the SCREAM Awards are chosen by what looks to me, to be a highly qualified advisory board that includes Tim Burton, John Carpenter, Wes Craven, Damon Lindelof, Ridley Scott, Quentin Tarantino & Joss Whedon.

What I like about the SCREAM Awards is that once nominated by the advisory board, it’s up to you, the fans, to vote.  That takes out the ever evil politicing factor out of the equation and we see real winners.

Kick-Ass

The movie with the most nominations looks to be Kick-Ass (17),

Inception Teaser Poster 1

Inception (15) &

IRON MAN 2 Promotional Poster

Iron Man 2 (13).  The TV series with the most is True Blood (10).

But the problem is that this last year is stacked with some wonderful films.

The STARZ Saturday Premiere will be having a few great movies coming on the air for the month of June.

  • District 9 will be airing on June 5th;
  • Cloudy with a Change of Meatballs on June 12th;
  • Michael Jackson’s This is It on June 19th.

Sounds like STARZ customers will have a great few weeks of Saturday night movies.

Movie MarketingHave you ever wondered what studios spend on marketing movies to sway you to spend your money on their movies in the theaters?  Hollywood spends around $4 billion per year marketing to you and the movie goer in the United States spends almost $10 billion a year at the box office.

It seems simple enough to advertise a movie, yet advertising is designed through various factors of psychological marketing to seem appealing to some part of your mental makeup.  Whether it be through the use of colors, familiar or inspiring music (Like how Clash of the Titans ads sucked me in with their awesome music) or familiar themes in commercials, where product ads appeal to staying in touch with friends and family.

Elements of Marketing a Movie

All the elements of marketing come from years of study, learning what works with people on the psychological level.  I studied marketing to understand how to get my real estate website off the ground and through various techniques, it took less than a year to get it to the #1 spot in my field in less than a year.  But that was a combination of marketing and applicable SEO. (Search Engine Optimization.)

Sleep Dealer DVD Cover Art

Sleep Dealer: A movie review

Stars: Luis Fernando Pena,  Leonor Varela,  And Jacob Vargas

Directed By Alex Rivera
PG-13;   2008   90 min.  Spanish with English subtitles.

(((  There are No Spoilers included in this review )))

Like its Mumbai cousin, the 2008 independent Spanish science fiction film Sleep Dealer flew right under the radar of most Americans.  I remember seeing a Sleep Dealer poster here around town.  Living in LA, I wasn’t sure if it was a cable mini-series, feature film or homo erotic theater. The poster featured some dudes upper back with wires and cable ports popping out like a Borg drone.  Within a few weeks the poster was gone and the film a (maybe see it on DVD) memory.

Fortunately last week I stumbled upon the Sleep Dealer DVD. Because of the cool looking alternate cover art and rareness of the film I picked it up immediately.  I wasn’t sure what to expect, the region code was missing and the film’s in Spanish with English subtitles.  Could this film be the science fiction Slumdog Millionaire, or a Hispanic MST3K crap-fest?

Well 2009 is about to become a memory like so many years gone by.  I almost forgot to write my DVD Release Report this weekend because all I’ve been thinking about is “AVATAR” since I watched it on Friday. (Check out my Avatar review)

This is the last holiday week, and while there’s some real great films coming out the list is shorter then usual.  Of course I’ve removed a lot of the workout and boring mathematical DVD’s coming out. If any Cinema Static readers want me to include those in the future let me know.

My DVD movie pick and second best film of the year is out this week!  District 9 the debut directorial epic by Neill Blomkamp finally arrives, and just in time!  Also the classic Philadelphia Experiment is re released this week. Great film I highly recommend it even as a great Christmas Day viewing with the family.

DISTRICT 9 Promo Art

I’ve seen Disrict 9 a few times now, I’ve chatted with a few people and I thought I’d toss out my take on the movie.

District 9 (D-9) is an incredibly imaginative tale of social injustices that can happen across the span of any species.

D-9 shows us just how ugly fearing the unknown can be and takes a serious jab at that part of humanity, using the science fiction genre to tell that tale.  When director Neill Blomkamp used aliens to speak his mind, he forced us to listen and take note.  To be confronted by an issue that is as old as humanity itself, as humans take offense through fear and how they react to that fear, in how they deal with the aliens.  Of course, it goes both way and some aliens didn’t help the issue either, but none-the-less, the attitude is there on both sides and it’s hard to escape from.

Tis The Season, With No Reason for Remakes

Actually, if feels like the era of some of the most non-originality to date.

Remake after remake is coming out as old films from the 70’s and 80’s keep coming out, again and again.  It’s like no one wants to venture out and make a quality first go at something.

Sure, it’s an old movie with new actors that maybe we’d want to see in the roles.  It’s the modernatization of old things.  Like the new Ford Mustangs that look very similar to the 1965 Mustangs.
