doctor who: the end of time

New DVD and Blu-ray Releases from Cinema Static

Welcome to Cinema Static’s DVD & Blu-ray Release report For February 2nd 2010.

It’s February 2010 and the first week doesn’t disappoint if your looking for some great new DVD and Blu-ray’s.

Well the big release this week is Zombieland, but I’m looking forward to Jerome Bixby’s The Man from Earth. If I never see another zombie film that’s just fine with me. He Was A Quiet Man starring Christian Slater also looks pretty disturbing.

My TV pick’s and (favorite) of the week is no doubt, Doctor Who: The Waters of Mars and Doctor Who: The End of Time, Parts 1 and 2. This is it the final performances from David Tennant!  I haven’t seen these yet and I can’t wait to get them! Thanks BBC for releasing these fairly quickly, I couldn’t stand to wait much longer!  (Editors note:  I found The Waters of Mars to be quite creepy, in a good entertaining way!)

Blu-ray seems to be taking off as a format.  I have no intention of switching over but each week there’s more and more BR releases so somebody’s buying these.  My Blu-ray pick of the week is, Pan’s Labyrinth.  Other noteworthy releases, To Live and Die in L.A. finally lives on Blu-ray and the Classic Casablanca is ready for a new age to play it again.

Enough about what I’m going to buy (Doctor Who!!!) Here’s this weeks Cinema Static DVD /Blu-ray list.   :)

The Doctor Who: The End of Time was everything that I expected it to be.  It was also less and in the end, it was so much more.  The last 20 minutes was worth the entire ride.

The End of Time was the classic final showdown between the Doctor and The Master.

These sets of episodes, as you all know, were also the last we’ll see of David Tennant playing the good Doctor.

BBC America released a statement today stating that the airing of Doctor Who: The Waters of Mars on December 19th gave the network its highest ever ratings for the demographic age of 25-54.

Doctor Who with David Tennant brought in 1.1 million viewers and in my mind, let them know that we here in the U.S. want our Doctor Who!

The Waters of Mars was the first of the final 3 “episodes” of David Tennant’s era as Doctor Who.

Why he moved on, I haven’t a clue but I’m kind of mad at him for doing so…. leaving us with the new upstart, Matt Smith under the leadership of Steven Moffat, the new lead writer and exec producer.

We’ve just been apprised via a press release on the final Doctor Who project that David Tennant will be playing the well known time traveler.

It’s a sad time for Tennant fans, though if you’ve got the access, David Tennant will be in an NBC comedy pilot coming up.

As far as Tennant’s last role as the good Doctor, here’s the complete press release.  This is somewhat depressing if you’ve come to love Tennant’s characterization of the good Doctor.

Doctor Who press release:

BBC AMERICA today announced the U.S. premiere of David Tennant’s final special as the Tenth Doctor.  Doctor Who: The End of Time, Part Two, premieres January 2, one week after Part One, on BBC AMERICA.  The finale to the era of David Tennant is one of the most eagerly anticipated adventures in the history of Doctor Who.  Guest stars include John Simm (Life on Mars) as the Master, Timothy Dalton, Catherine Tate and Bernard Cribbins.  New synopses for the final three specials airing on the channel three straight Saturdays over the holiday season are available below.

Doctor Who: The Waters of Mars airs Saturday, December 19, 9:00pm ET/PT

Doctor Who: The End of Time, Part One airs Saturday, December 26, 9:00pm ET/PT

Doctor Who: The End of Time, Part Two airs Saturday, January 2, 8:30 pm ET/PT

Regarding the final specials, lead writer and executive producer Russell T Davies told Radio Times, “It’s personal for the Doctor. The Master (John Simm) is his enemy, his opposite, and yet so tantalizingly close to being his soul mate.  There’s something epic about their sheer existence – the last two survivors of an ancient race. It’s a clash of the titans. Both of them, heading for death, and yet both determined to survive – at any cost!”
