WonderCon Changes Cities

WonderCon logoFirst up, in case you had not heard the news/update, is that WonderCon has moved!  Zoinks!  It used to take place in San Francisco and did so up until this last event in the beginning of this year.  This last event was their best ever attended WonderCon venue in Frisco, where it’s been held for the last 6 years, but now, it’s time to move onward.  I’ve never felt crowded in at WonderCon, but now they’re headed to Anaheim, to the largest convention center on the West Coast.  These are my old stomping grounds which is pretty exciting for me!

Next year, WonderCon will he held at the ANAHEIM CONVENTION CENTER on March 16th to 18th, 2012.  Sweet, I have an entire lifetime of memories down there and I know exactly where I’m headed to eat!  HA!  On top of that, the latest news is that J. Michael Straczynski was just added to their guest list.

With the event moving to Anaheim, if there’s one that that location will offer, is food and lots of it.  Up in San Francsico, there wasn’t a lot for everyone to enjoy.  Locals know where to go and there was a Buca di Beppo, right (almost) next door.  They became very familiar with me there for that weekend!

So I guess we’ll all now meet up in Anaheim!  Right next to Disney Land!

Eliza Dushku TV & Web Appearance News

-

FYI:  Eliza Dushku will be appearing in the 9th episode of White Collar‘s third season.  In other news, White Collar is getting a third season!

Also some other news regarding Eliza Dushku is that she signed on for the animated, online feature titled Torchwood: Web of Lies.  Hmm, web, online…  is their a connection?  Other voices you’ll be hearing in the animated series based on the series, Torchwood: Miracle Day.  Other voices heard will be John Barrowman and Eve Myles.  The animated feature will have 10 different 3-minute episodes, all written by everyone’s writing god, Jane Espenson.

It will premiere online just before the premiere episode of Torchwood: Miracle Day, and then each subsequent episode will air after each episode of Miracle Day airs.

Dollhouse, Buffy, Angel & The Guild Comic News!

Dollhouse Epitaths from Dark Horse

We know that during the series run of Dollhouse, Joss Whedon was a wee bit downtrodden about the idea of doing a comic version of the show.  He went from saying “no,” to “maybe,” to there are no plans to do this.  I’m happy to report that now we have definitive news that Dark Horse Comics will be carrying on the torch of the Eliza Dushku starrer in comic book form!  Shiny!  Can I say shiny about a Dollhouse title?  Hope so, I just did!  (But then again… if you read this column, you already knew about the Dark Horse Epitath titles…  right!?  If you were around reading this fledgling website site back in July 0f ’10 that is.)

The Dark Horse Comics Dollhouse title will be written by Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen and will pick up the battle of our heroes after the point in time where the TV series ended, during the era that we were teased about in the episodes “Epitaph One” and “Epitaph Two.”  Whedon and Tancharoen both wrote for the TV series, so they both bring brains full of knowledge and ideas from the franchise.  Hence, I’m not worried about the title flopping in the eyes of the fans.

Cliff Richards will be the artist and we can expect the title to be released in the mainstream sometime in 2011.  (There was already a special preview version sold during the San Diego Comic-Con event.

New DVD and Blu-ray Releases from Cinema Static

This week, over 281 new DVD/Blu-ray titles are coming out for your consumption.  From the 281 titles there are a few movies and a bunch of TV series titles.  Today, I’m touching on some of the more popular titles that your friends, peers and buddies are snatching up from Amazon.com now!

How to Train Your Dragon DVD

How to Train Your Dragon is one of the movies being released on Tuesday, October 12th… followed by the Josh Brolin starring Jonah Hex.

Joss Whedon’s ill-received Dollhouse series is releasing its second season on disc and one of my favorites, CSI: Miami with the ever witful Horatio Cain, played by David Caruso.  (I bet he’s glad he left NYPD Blue.  Did you know that Caruso is writing and producing his own project titled Rehab?  It stars Josh Stewart and is about a controversial psychiatrist who conducts a retreat for patients suffering from severe dissociative personality disorders. The intense, week- long treatment reveals a devious agenda that is more dangerous than their violent psychosis.  Thought Caruso fans would like to know that.)

Family entertainment shows include some Dexter’s Laboratory finally gets its first season out on disc and Thomas & Friends and bringing in some holiday cheer.  Of course there’s some giant spinning turtle, Gamera, coming out on Blu-ray!

Eliza Dushku as Echo in Joss Whedon's Dollhouse

Eliza Dushku as Echo in Joss Whedon's Dollhouse

I came across the below music video of a sorts paying a bit of homage to Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse starring Eliza Dushku.   I miss the show to a degree, but watching the video reminded me how convoluted the plot was.  It was a concoction of Joss’s & Eliza brain power, but had it been just a touch simpler, would it have lasted longer?

Looking Back:

Rather than having brain wiped, programmable human dolls, if they had just tread a little closer to agents who willingly had the skills jammed into their heads for each assignment might have been more palatable.  Sure, the usual drab critics would have jumped on the “like The Matrix” bandwagon, but with Joss and team behind the keyboards, Dollhouse could have stood out in its own, usual way.

The SYFY CHANNEL

If you’re waiting anxiously for the Syfy Channel’s usual fare of movie marathon material for the upcoming holiday, you need wait no longer.  They’ve prepared a woderful slate of Syfy Original movies for your viewing numbing!  I mock, but I’m looking at this list and can say I’ve seen them all!  Bring it!!!  I’ve got the beer!

Uh ho, I’m having another idea… Syfy (Are you listening?) should try a pilot program in my town where they air some of their movies in a movie theater, charge very little and let the audience have at and participate… just like those hundred or so Rocky Horror Picture Show showings I went to at midnight back in my youth… those were totally fun times!  I’d light up a lighter and heave toilet paper rolls at the screen again for this!

(All days are shown in the order airing, noted by the press information.  I’ve eliminated the times so you HAVE TO go look up the movie and when it will air… just in case things change!)

Dollhouse season 2 - from Joss Whedon starring Eliza Dushku

The 2nd season of the ill-fated and sometimes confusing TV series Dollhouse, created by Joss Whedon and starred Eliza Dushku, is coming to DVD and Blu-ray and is now available for pre-order!  And I know that’s good news for all the Joss Whedon or Dollhouse fans out there!

Admittedly Dollhouse was an acquired taste, so to speak where you were either a fan of Whedon or Dushku’s work, or were incredibly patient with this show that had some serious potential, but really, only knocked my socks off a few times during the 2-season run it had on Fox.  The subtlety of the writing was where the real gem to the story lay, but sometimes, even for me, I sometimes missed the point because I literally looked away or got distracted by something else in the room.  I’m not saying that as a ding, but more of a reference to being the dedicated fan who hung on every word and scene, who truly understood the show.

Convention Listings from CinemaStatic - 450w

Ever wonder when the next Comic Con is coming up?  And I don’t mean the one in San Diego that is practically sold out?    Speaking of Comic-Con International 2010, it is 98% sold out for Thursday, Friday and Saturday are both sold out, and Sunday is 77% sold out.  It’s been my experience that Sunday is the TV panel day so you’re in luck if that’s your focus!  Check out my Survival Guide for Comic-Con.  It can be applied to any convention, but it’s based on the craziness that is Comic-Con International in San Diego!

Here are other conventions taking place in a town near you… hopefully!  These upcoming conventions are taking place in Toronto Canada and Los Angeles, CA.
