Caprica A Cylon assembly line

The season premiere of Ronald D. Moore‘s Caprica, in its 1.5th season on the Syfy Channel, kicked it in gear with the story picking it up some weeks after the events that unfolded in the previous episode, the mid-season finale.

If you remember, a car blew up but Clarice (Polly Walker) wasn’t in it.  Amanda Graystone (Paula Malcomson) was stepping off a very tall ledge on a bridge, we also saw Joseph Adama (Esai Morales) get removed from the virtual city by his daughter and Zoe/Cylon (Alessandra Torresani) drove a stolen van into a police barricade, destroying the van.

Most of these and other story lines are continued in the mid-season premiere of Caprica titled “Unvanquished.”

Indeed.

Caprica Episode Review

-

We open the episode with Daniel Graystone (Eric Stolz) disheveled on his couch.  He’s lost his wife, the  Virgis corporation has taken over Graystone industries and to make matters worse, they’ve apparently copied the chip from Zoe’s Cylon and have transplanted the fighting skills from that chip into production models rolling off the assembly line.

Alessandra Torresani as Zoe Graystone in Syfy Channel's Caprica

Caprica is returning to the Syfy Channel to pick up the 2nd half of its first season on October 5th, 2010. It struggled in the ratings in its premiere season and I am wondering if the creative team behind the show has changed anything up to spice it up for the viewers.

Granted, Caprica is a smart show, but I think it’s too smart for its own good. The story lines are developing at a very organic rate and details are not just pulled from thin air.  But I think organic is too detailed, too slow for the television viewer.  Or is it way too many story lines?  We have a lot of layers to digest.

With that said though, I hope that something can be done to make a happy medium between detailed story telling and enticing viewers to stick around for what they feel is entertainment enough and hence, help the ratings.

Caprica cylon

Caprica returns to Syfy in it’s new night, Tuesday, October 5th, 2010 for season 2*.  A lot happened last season and a reminder video clip has been provided by the Syfy Channel, if you’re so inclined to play catch up! (I’m calling it season 2 but it is really season 1.5.)

DISCLAIMER:  Even if you didn’t find yourself enjoying the first season of Caprica, this 5 minute review is done in a dry-wit, matter of fact, snarky mode that totally agreed with me.  It’s worth checking out, if for anything, bringing yourself up to speed with things as they are.

Caprica will transport us from stunningly vivid, twisted Virtual Realities to the fascinating outer worlds of the 12 Colonies.  Along the way, revolutionary tensions rise, family power shifts and our characters grapple with the physical and emotional consequences of their questionable decisions.  As the season races towards its stunning conclusion, each episode lays the groundwork for the inevitable (and brutal) clash between the new Cylon race and its human creators.”

SYFY STARGATE CAPRICA SANCTUARY SMACKDOWN

Watch Wrestling take over Fridays and our Genre get kicked on Tuesdays

The 2nd half of the first season of Caprica is returning to the airwaves of the Syfy Channel on Oct. 5th, 2010.  That’s Tuesday, October 5th.  Now Stargate Universe and Caprica have been shoved over to the biggest power hitting night of the televised night, Tuesdays, so Friday Night Smackdown can happen on Syfy on Friday nights.

On the other hand, Sanctuary will now be premeiring on Friday, Oct. 15th, 2010, following wrestling.  Which is probably one of the worse lead-in shows to ever follow because literally, the 2 genre’s don’t mix, as the previous few years that wrestling has been on Syfy has proven.

The oddity that caught my eye:  For some reason the press release states that the network was trying to find a way to get Caprica back on the air sooner than January and I’m not sure what that’s about.  I literally can’t believe that a network that has to balance out advertiser budget books with production costs and network time and what not actually starts setting their programming schedules a month out from actual air dates.  Seriously?

Back on July 21st, Tim conjectured here on Cinema Static on BruSimm if Syfy will be canceling Caprica or not.  I guess we should have waited an hour or so!  In a freaky sense of timing, it was later announced by Syfy that the 2nd half of the Caprica season will be returning to the airwaves starting in January of 2011.

I’m not sure why the premise is behind prolonging the airing of the rest of the season’s episodes for so long, but it could be precluding the premise of 10-episode seasons in the future. It works over-seas, and I’m betting they’re testing those waters here in the U.S. to see how much we’ll tolerate.

I just got done watching Jericho, which has been airing on the Syfy Channel all day.

JERICHO with SKEET ULRICH

I’ve watched the last few episodes of this really fine show and it’s a shame that it couldn’t have been carried or supported properly by CBS.  They’ve got themselves some serious ratings stompers so I understand why this didn’t stick with the show, but dang, this is some well written story.

Jericho ran for 2 seasons from from 2006 to 2008, with a slight interruption because it was canceled after the first season, despite drawing in an average of 9+ million viewers.  A raging fan campaign got it a 2nd season.  But the 2nd season wasn’t really that well supported by CBS and it floundered with a mere 6+ million average of viewers.

The producers of Caprica got it right with the latest episode, “Gravedancing.” I hope that it is in time for the series to come back from its fall in the ratings.

Although being played by excellent actors, until now there has been little about the characters to like, though they do not have to be admirable. Even a villain can be made interesting and the hero of his own story. There must a be beating human heart at the center of the story or the audience will lose interest.

Caprica is beautifully filmed and the special effects are flawless. However, special effects and CGI are only tools to be used to help convey the story. Some of the best story telling has been done on a bare stage with only the actors imagination and a brilliant script.
