eureka

If you caught Syfy Channel’s holiday/Christmas episode of Eureka, you were in for an interesting treat, to say the least, with the tale narrated by S.A.R.A.H., the house.

With the entire gang all there, this promised to be a Eureka kind of Christmas!

Of course, this is Eureka and nothing goes as planned.  But this new problem that crops up involves the grown ups, the fake snow, and the kids Christmas present which they’re not supposed to open or, well, power up!

And then all kinds of animation breaks loose!  Or more to the point, the what’chya-m’cell-it on the top of the mountain goes awry and emanates a signal that turns everyone into either cartoons, clay-mation or modern-day anime butt-kickers!

It’s a stand-alone episode that doesn’t quite fit into the regular story line, and that’s fine.  Now it can be played out for whatever year they want.

As many of you all know, Eureka was canceled and its last season is coming up next year.

If you followed the media on the issue, it seemed that the timing of the cancellation was in line with when Comcast took over NBC.  There was even some snafu with some Syfy channel press releases first saying they renewed Eureka, then a few days later, releasing a statement that it was, instead, canceled.  It was noted that network management was said to have fought to keep the fan-favorite show in the schedule.

If you do the funny math and look at how NBC/Syfy kept renewing the show each year, though the ratings weren’t stupendous, it seemed to do well enough for them.  Then, along comes Comcast, who took over NBC, and from the outside looking in, it sure seemed to be curious timing that not long after they took over, Eureka was canceled.

I also took it upon myself to guess ever further that the company making billions in a down economy knows how to make money and where to trim the fat to keep the profits moving at a healthy pace.

This year though, Syfy is having a viewers vote contest for fans, who can vote for what their favorite Twilight Zone episodes!

Syfy channel LogoOver the last month or so, a slate of TV news has been coming out of the Syfy channel network.

First up is the announcement of some classic Syfy TV series returns:

Syfy channel’s present set of popular scripted TV shows… Warehouse 13, Alphas, Eureka* and Haven were all responsible for Syfy’s best third quarter in the network’s history by having drawn in 1.45 million total viewers between them.

(*Which still confuses me that Syfy canceled Eureka.)

Then for more scripted series news, keep in mind that Being Human is returning for its second season on January 16 at 9PM (ET/PT). And the new series (to Syfy), Lost Girl, is bringing it’s season premiere after Being Human, at 10PM.

Syfy channel LogoThis coming Thanksgiving holiday (2011) the Syfy channel will be hitting up viewers with a James Bond movie marathon.  If you’re a James Bond kind of fan, I’m guessing that’s a good thing.

There will be fifteen Bond movies on Syfy, and you’ll get to see every single actor who has portrayed the romanticizing secret agent, from the venerable Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan to Daniel Craig, the latest Double-Oh Seven agent.

All this skullduggery and espionage of ’007′ starts airing on Syfy on Wednesday, November 23 with the midnight showing of You Only Live Twice.

Now if you’re a Sci Fi sort of fan and not a James Bond fan, not all hope is lost on this Thanksgiving weekend.

On Saturday, November 26 at 9PM (ET/PT), we will have presented to us the world premiere of the Saturday Original Movie Storm War!

EurekaTV Fans everywhere are recovering from the news that Syfy has cancelled Eureka, the longest running scripted Syfy series on the air.   Being that among the genre fans, this show seemed to be the most popular show on Monday nights*, the cancellation report came as a shock to many.  And yet, with each new TV season, more core sci-fi/fantasy series seem to be getting shoved to Mondays and Fridays, then subsequently, getting the boot.

Though we’re in the midst of the 4th season of Eureka and we do have a 5th season coming, and now, with an extra episode added to next season so the writers can create a proper ending, the end is a wee bit off, but it is coming.

Fans reactions to the cancellation seem to be focused on the understandable frustration and angry aspect of losing one more TV fave from the tube and from this network in particular.  Many folks are threatening to cancel their cable packages/tiers that had the Syfy channel in it and using other colorful metaphors to describe how they feel about the network.

Before you tie Syfy to the stake and light the pyre, you should keep something in mind:  Syfy, whose parent network is NBC, is now owned by Comcast.  Yes, we now have to add the newest ingredient to the programming decision makers, Comcast.

I was reminded of this scenario when it was driven home when Eureka‘s co-exec producer Amy Berg (Eureka, Leverage, The 4400) used Twitter to make the following public note:

“Everyone is asking why. It’s simple, really.”

“We are the network’s golden child in every way, except profit margins. Fact is, #Eureka is an expensive show to make.”

“And we could not maintain the quality of our show with the cuts it would take to make us profitable for Syfy’s new parent company.”

“Our creative execs at Syfy fought hard to keep us. Trust me, they LOVE us. We just couldn’t make the numbers work.”

You don’t have to look between the lines to see that she notes that the cuts needed to renew the show to make it profitable for Syfy’s new parent company.  In other words, it looks like Syfy is being dragged even deeper into the business realm of return of investment, or the balancing out of cost vs investment.

Syfy TV Cancellation News

Foreboding news gang.  Despite the glowing news last week about how as far as Syfy is concerned, Eureka would go on forever, the tune has suddenly changed and Eureka has been canceled.

Instead of a 6th season already pre-ordered, EW is reporting that Syfy is ending Eureka when it concludes the 5th season.  What Eureka fans have left, will be the holiday episode and 12 regular episodes in 2012.  (Remember, Syfy’s parent network is NBC.  NBC is now run by Comcast.)

In hopes of keeping you around until the end, Syfy says the 12 eps of season 5 are some of the best they’ve seen.  The sales pitch isn’t necessary.  The core fan-base of Eureka fans will not only stick it out until the end, they’ll be letting the network know how they feel.

Eureka TV News:

It was announced today (8/4/11) that the Syfy network has renewed the popular series, Eureka.

Syfy has ordered 13 episodes for a fifth season of the show that stars Colin Ferguson, Salli Richardson-Whitfield & Neil Grayson.

It’s a great little show that has fun with sci-fi themed plots based in a town whose sole existence is to create “things” for the military and other scientific endeavors.  Of course, the show doesn’t take itself too seriously while they have their little catastrophes that range from elementary school science fairs gone wrong, to accidental space flights when someone shuts  a hatch that closes the circuit that launches the ship.

The show is great, light-hearted fun.
