firefly

Brusimm Cinema Static TV NewsThis upcoming 2011 Thanksgiving holiday weekend, we have a few things going on around the house, much like I suspect you do.  If you’re going to be taking it easy and just hanging out around your home, whether it’s quietly stashed away, or with loved ones, your TV is going to be staring at you… calling your name, saying ‘watch me,’ I have all kinds of TV series marathons or movie marathons going on.

I see The Walking Dead, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Battlestar Galactica, NCIS, & a Firefly* marathon…  (*If you get Science Channel)

So if you pick up that remote and fire it off at your TV, here are a few things coming up for the Thanksgiving weekend… a TV marathon or two, so to speak.

And folks…  to anyone coming by, whether you’re popping in once or a repeat offender (visitor) checking out this post, I want to say from the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone who comes by and visits my tiny little corner of the web.

Happy Thanksgiving and bless all of you and yours…

Now, back to my regularly scheduled snark and stuff…

Jason Ritter and Sarah Roemer in 'The Event'

When I watched what I thought was the series finale of The Event, I had a few choice thoughts about it…  like leaving us hanging with a new planet in our sky, earthquakes rattling the world and those pesky aliens wanting to take back the planet for themselves.  We had stopped their evil plans to kill us all with a plague, to find out that would have been the humane method of ridding the rock of these pesky humans.

The finale for The Event, I presumed, kept us and our creative hopes engaged by forcing us to decide for ourselves, what was to become of everyone and everything on Earth.  I presumed humanity would win and adapt, with lingering aliens either accepting their fate and to continually plot for another 65 years to try again.

But now it seems that my imagined outcome and future of the mythical Earth may no longer be the case!  Right now the “word on the street” is that the Syfy channel is in talks to possibly pick up The Event and continue it as a miniseries.

Serenity Firefly class shipWhile everyone is spinning around trying to understand the Firefly TV series rights issues, the one thing I was interested in was how the Firefly premiere on the Science Channel went.

Robert Seidman over on TV By The Numbers put up the stats on the Firefly premiere.

Now there is apparently no demographic information floating about, but he put up a chart that ranked the top-25 shows that have aired on the Science Channel.

For numbers, obviously 431k viewers seem horrid on the standard scale that we are all used to reviewing, but the best viewed episode of Firefly did pull in 431k viewers and made it the 4th most viewed show on the network that week.

How It’s Made would seem to be the most viewed show on the network.

So that’s how Firefly rated on the Science Channel.

Thanks to Robert for digging that info up!

Summer Glau and Nathan Fillion, two stars from 'Firefly' Series from Joss Whedon

A few weeks back Nathan Fillion had made a statement that amounted to what I could only surmise as a inner-secret wish but not something serious, when he said if he won the lottery, he’d buy the rights to Firefly.  The idea of Nathan Fillion buying the Firefly rights is a pretty exciting prospect.  In what I anticipated, there were a few others that showed a supportive mode of thought, a few other Firefly alumni, in both the showrunner and cast side, added to the hopes by saying that they support such a thought.

Fans went nuts.  Firefly fans are diehard Browncoats and any shred of hope is something that fans hang onto.  That’s why when they hear of something developing, they grasp that hope with every once of strength and not let go.  In fact some charge forward, hoping against the odds, that if they push this little snowball down the hill, it will roll, pick up some speed, some size, and become an unstoppable force.

Firefly fans are some of the best, most dedicated fans I think I’ve ever seen and I don’t blame them.

-

One fan group immediately started collecting pledges (not cash) for donations that would facilitate Nathan Fillion not having to win the lottery, but rather, fund his very idea of his being able to buy the rights.  But alas, some facts started to come to light about this dream and things started to slow down a bit and they’ve stopped actively collecting pledges.

-

The first bit of fact was that the idea that 20th Century Fox would actually sell the rights seemed far-fetched at best.  Would you sell a cash cow?  OK, it might not be a cash cow, put it is some stream of income somewhere, as networks continue to pay for the rights to air Firefly and people continue to purchase the series on DVD, where ever that money may go!

Firefly on Science Channel

This Sunday, March 6th, Joss Whedon‘s Firefly will be premiering on the Science Channel.  For those of you who have not ever seen the show, and yes, I’m betting there are plenty out there who haven’t, you are in for a great treat… if you get Science.

Summer Glau and Nathan Fillion, two stars from 'Firefly' Series from Joss WhedonOf course what’s amazing is that there repeat viewers that will probably tune in too!  I always find myself watching

In regards to the ferver that erupted about folks wanting Nathan Fillion to buy the rights to Firefly, I know we’d all love to see that happen, but realistically speaking, do you really think that 20th Century Fox would actually sell the rights to a guaranteed seller that they can keep pitching over and over?  I’m just saying.  Then again, if someone offered them $300 million for a $20-$30 million rights package, who knows!

Firefly class transport fr Joss Whedon's FIREFLY seriesAs I noted earlier this week (Feb 13th) for my fans and readers, the Discovery Science Channel will be re-airing the Firefly series, a much beloved Joss Whedon created TV series.  It was previously re-aired in USA Network.  This new re-airing will show the two-hour pilot, then the first episode on March 6th.  After that the show will air each Sunday in high definition, in the proper order.

This Firefly news is obviously relevant to people who only get the Discovery Science Channel, but cool for them.  This specific news for that small demographic of cable viewers has been spreading like wildfire as just about every website out there has a huge Firefly fan in their midst that wants to write about this development.

'Firefly' from Joss Whedon, cast with Nathan Fillion

Inside TV hooked up with Nathan Fillion, the star of the ‘Fox ill-fated’ sci-fi western series and there were some interesting tid bits that came out of the interview that is exclusive to the site from their five question telephone interview.

Joss Whedon's Firefly

Firefly, from Joss Whedon

On the Discovery press web page, they’ve posted a subtle but very important notice for fans of the Joss Whedon created television series, Firefly.

Firefly is a sci-fi / western series starring Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres and more that aired in 2002.

If I could extrapolate from what I’m seeing, it seems that the Discovery Science Channel may have  bought the rights to the entire series to air it.  That’s right, the Discovery Science Channel.  I guess the Syfy Channel somehow missed out on this one. Go figure.

According to the press release, Firefly will start airing on on March 6th at 8 p.m. Eastern Time USA.  If you’ve never seen this show and you now have a chance to, Cinema Static recommends that you at least give it a try and see what you think.  I’m a bit jealous that some of you may very well be seeing this series for the very first time.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Remake

-

It was previously written that Warner Bros is going forward with a remake of the 1992 Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie.  Joss Whedon was the screenplay writer for the movie and later, the writer & executive producer of the TV series by the same name.  Joss Whedon then parlayed the success of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series into a spinoff series titled Angel.

During the Buffy series alone, Whedon introduced us to many actors who will, through time, become beloved actors with not only the Whedonverse, but all the world!

The Simpsons on FoxFox has just ordered one more season of The Simpsons.  This renewal of this Sunday night ratings workhorse will give the animated series its twenty-third season and in that season, the show will hit its 500th episode.  By estimations, the 500th episode should show up in February of 2012.

The Simpsons pulls in around 8 million viewers an episode and stays strong. The only other shows to outrun 500 episodes in their lifetime is Lassie (588) & Gunsmoke (635).  At least Bart can tell you who exactly fell down the well, if he’s of the mind to!

Of interesting notes from the NY Mag article, they said we have another Bansky-level couch gag possibly in the works for this season.

Wonder Woman by JPRart on Deviant Art

Despite Joss Whedon taking a spin at writing a sript in 2005 for a Wonder Woman movie, Warner Bros “just didn’t like my take.”, as Joss put it and apparently the studio didn’t really push the issue for some time since.  Now it seems that the studio has decided it won’t be making a movie.  Instead, they’ve tapped David E. Kelley to write and produce a Wonder Woman TV series.

Hearing the David E. Kelley is going to be the showrunner for Wonder Woman sparked all kinds of wonder in this camp.

I became an instant fan of Kelley’s after experiencing the 1999 movie Lake Placid, that was directed by Steve Miner and written and produced by David E. Kelley.  That movie split ribs for me with such wonderfully blatant sarcastic humor that I couldn’t help but not like the writer.

In the same year he also wrote Mystery, Alaska.

But before we focus on his movie credentials any further, let’s take a look at his television series resume to better understand his experience with the small screen.
