Rogue One A Star Wars Story review

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (spoiler free review) is wonderful mix of story and action combined to make a great little sub-chapter in the realm of Star Wars in a galaxy, far, far away.

The cast includes Felicity Jones (Jyn), Diego Luna (Cassian), Alan Tudyk (K-2SO), Forest Whitaker (Saw), & Jimmy Smits.

Rogue One is directed by Gareth Edwards (Monsters, Godzilla) and as true to form, he does not fail to entertain.

movie review, a Rogue One scene

Edwards can take a story about something huge and make so much more about the details and the people in the story. In his first film, Monsters (our review), it was all about the people with the monsters we hear off in the distance, always creating that unknown tension. In his second film, Godzilla (our review), the big green guy was only on-screen for less than twenty minutes.

BTW, if you ever catch Edwards’ indie film, Monsters, keep in mind that he filmed it himself with just a few people and random extras they encountered on the road and he post-produced in his bedroom.   (Monsters on Amazon)

It was no different here in Rogue One… the story about the people was more captivating than the tale being told in the background. The film presents a rich tapestry of characters without overdoing it. And Edwards taps on some major themes from the franchise while taking a bold a new approach to his presentation of the material.

The third act, when all the action of comes to bear, Edwards spends an equal amount of time between the big action and little stories. Among the huge exploding scenes are poignant personal moments.

All of this while furthering an untold chapter of the Star Wars franchise.
