Mary Parent joins Pacific Rim.
So why am I excited about that bit of news?
In news that is about as pleasing as any production staffing news can get, it’s being reported that Mary Parent has joined the production team of Pacific Rim as co-producer, the movie being helmed by Guillermo del Toro.
Why I’m reporting on the production staffing is that Mary Parent, through the years, has been a consistent supporter of Joss Whedon. Though she’s met with constant resistance and other issues that have popped up while backing Whedon, she still seems to understand the intrinsic value that Whedon brings to a production.
Parent has backed such Whedon projects as Serenity, The Cabin in the Woods and the ill-fated movie that has been floating in legal never-never land, Goners.

During a premiere event junket, Eliza Dushku dropped the hint that she and Joss Whedon are developing a feature film. Details though, are something the ex-active (Dollhouse) wouldn’t let on, though she did say that they’ve been thinking about this project for a few years.
What could it be? Some conjecture that it could be Goners. If it’s Goners, does that mean that Universal released the Goners movie rights they’ve been hoarding? That’s hard to believe, considering how movie houses love to hang on to project rights, despite fan desire.

Found an interesting plea to Universal Pictures to let Joss Whedon’s Goners be set free into the wild so it can be made into a movie!
Right now Universal is hoarding the rights to the movie and they’re sitting on it… that’s the cliff notes version to the deal.

In a recent interview, Joss Whedon asked Universal to “release Goners into the wild so it can be free again”.
Since several years of rewrites led only to the project being put on the back burner, I respectfully urge you to do as he asks, so that the film can move forward.
As part of his fan base, I defer to whatever his wishes might be on just how that should happen. My own wish simply is to express my support for his request.
