New Movies from Cinema Static 2011 logo 475w lq

This week, the new movies at the movie theater will be bringing us a huge match-up of titans, with one of my favorites,  Vin Diesel (Pitch Black) facing off against the even bigger (My other fave) Dwayne Johnson (Walking Tall)! We’re also going to get some supernatural dissing from Brandon Routh (Scott Pilgrim, Unthinkable, Chuck).

'Fast Five' promo movie poster

Vin Diesel in 'Fast Five'Fast Five from Universal Pictures, stars Vin Diesel and Paul Walker reprising their The Fast and the Furious roles once again in the franchise’s fifth installment.   Other cast reprising roles includes Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson (Transformers franchise). Other cast includes Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges (who worked the music in The Fast and the Furious) and introducing the big man himself to the franchise, Dwayne Johnson.

“Dominic and his crew find themselves on the wrong side of the law once again as they try to switch lanes between a ruthless drug lord and a relentless federal agent.”

Dwayne Johnson in 'Fast Five'I’ve always wanted to see Diesel and Johnson in the same movie and I hope this huge confrontation is worth it. But what worries me is the franchise it’s taking place in.

Have you noticed how the ad campaign for Fast Five started changing this weekend? There’s more of a musical edge to it than the previous marketing campaigns. I always worry when an ad campaign changes its pace right before opening week.  To me, it’s not the best signal a distributor can send.

Fast Five is directed by Justin Lin (Fast & Furious, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift) and written by Chris Morgan (Fast & Furious, Wanted). At least the writer has had some success outside of this film’s franchise.

Normally I’d poo-poo the movie, but who doesn’t like fast cars and big, bulky, good looking actors?

Prediction: Probably making its money back at the box office.  The question is just how long that may take.

Neill Blomkamp‘s Elysium

Word on the street is that William Fichtner is in final talks to jump on board Neill Blomkamp‘s upcoming sci fi feature called Elysium.  Other cast already signed up for Elysium include Jodie Foster, Matt Damon, Sharlto Copley and Wagner Moura.

Is that not an awesome cast or what? And it will be great to see Fichtner in a new project. I love the life he brings to his roles.

Elysium takes place 150 years in the future and Sony is looking to release the film to theaters in March of 2013. AT least that’s the plan today.

Superatural Anime Series

Via Press Release:

Warner Bros. Television’s popular series SUPERNATURAL makes history this summer as SUPERNATURAL: THE ANIME SERIES is released in the United States as the first-ever live-action series to be re-imagined in Japanese anime style. The all-new, 22-episode animated series will be distributed July 26, 2011 by Warner Home Video on Blu-ray™ for $54.97 (SRP) and DVD for $49.98 (SRP), as well as On Demand and for Download. Order due date is June 21, 2011.

SUPERNATURAL, noted for its creative storytelling of the occult during its first six seasons on The CW Network, has also achieved great popularity across the planet – particularly in Japan. Inspired by its sensational following overseas, Warner Home Video Japan and renowned animation studio Madhouse combined forces to envision SUPERNATURAL as an anime series – first released in Japan and now translated for American audiences.

Supernatural The Anime Series BD cover

SUPERNATURAL: THE ANIME SERIES revisits the Winchester brothers’ journey down the backroads of America as they search for clues to their father’s disappearance, hunt down the supernatural in all its unearthly forms, and enter into the unexpected mystery of their destinies. The SUPERNATURAL anime episodes mirror the story arc of the series’ first two seasons, providing supplemental stories ranging from prequels and spin-offs to untold tales that fit within the SUPERNATURAL mythology.

Enhancing the connection to the live-action series, SUPERNATURAL star Jared Padalecki reprises his role as Sam Winchester for all 22 episodes. Padalecki’s SUPERNATURAL co-star Jensen Ackles also provides the voice of Dean Winchester in select anime episodes.
