This is a DVD movie review of the indie movie called Bellflower. It’s directed, written, co-produced and co-edited by Evan Glodell, who also plays our lead character, Woodrow.
The film synopsis says that this is about two guys that spend their free time building custom weapons in preparation for their hoped for apocalypse. Then they can form their gang called Mother Medusa. (These guys are serious Mad Max fans.)
Me, I’m calling Bellflower a film about friendship and that’s that. If you keep that in mind, it makes this journey a very challenging movie. A fascinating journey. And in the end, you’ll be saying, “Wow, Bruce was right.”
All God’s Creatures is a simple story… one about a single man’s change of lifestyle after encountering love. How simple can it be?
The film synopsis reads as follows:
Creature of habit, Jon Smith, spends his days mindlessly working as a barista in New York City. When night falls, this seeming everyman savagely kills “filthy women” as his social outlet. A chance encounter with Delia, a young prostitute searching for an escape from her troubled past, forces Jon to confront the most terrifying thing he has ever faced in all his dark affairs – himself. All God’s Creatures examines the true nature of what it means to be a monster and reveals that love is not only for a chosen few, but for All God’s Creatures.
All God’s Creatures stars Josh Folan (also writer/producer) as Jon, the serial murderer.
If you might recall, I’ve been hovering over the indie short film, Project Arbiter, since before March of 2010. I was introduced to the film creators work back in 2009 and that’s when Michael Chance‘s work snagged my imagination.
Project Arbiter is a 20-minute concept film that was shot on a RED One camera system.
It takes place in 1943 during WWII and we follow an experimental O.S.S. unit whose code name is Project Arbiter while they infiltrate a mysterious villa in Poland and uncover the mysteries within that villa, and the discovery that launches a story.
It’s a movie that blends the reality of World War II with sci-fi and the creator/director wants to have folks see the film as an untold story from the war that based mostly on the potential of the reality of it.
Or, rather than me trying to spell out what I know, here’s how they put it,
{ Project Arbiter is a sci-fi espionage story that demonstrates how a small quiet victory tips the balance of power and foretells the outcome of World War II. }
The new movie Insidious is directed by James Wan (Saw franchise) and is written by Leigh Whannell (Saw franchise). Producers include Jason Blum and Oren Peli ( both from the Paranormal Activity franchise).
That’s it. That’s all I needed to see and I’m looking to where I can find this film to watch!
About Insidious
Insidious stars Rose Byrne and Patrick Wilson and is about two parents battling evil spirits trying to possess their child as the spirits try to trap their comatose child in a realm called The Further.
Insidious is a 2010 indie film which picked up distribution at the Toronto Film Festival last year and will be seeing a national release on April 1st, 2011.
Kevin Smith‘s Red State opened at the Sundance Film Festival, where it caused a flurry of ticket sales and in the process of how Kevin Smith approached this teaser/opening, may very well be in the middle of redefining the indie film process… for those with the bucks!
Disclaimer: I only know of Kevin Smith via word-of-mouth. I’ve never seen any of his work and my only exposure to Mr. Smith was via his Twitter stream, where he’s never at a loss for foul language-laced words or touching on his intended escapades with his wife! I’ve also seen him at Comic-Con and Wonder-Con. He never made an impression on me and I found myself unfollowing him on Twitter due to his overuse of profanity & extended tirades. But now, as I read up on the man, it all makes sense as he seems to be on the verge of heralding a new way to distribute indie films… at least for him… the old fashioned way, one theater at a time, much like Gone with the Wind did, back in its day.

It would seem that Kevin Smith’s approach to movie marketing has paid off in oodles. A few weeks back Kevin Smith announced that he would not be doing any junkets with any press because they’re going to write what they want anyway, so rather than waste his time, he was going to distribute information about his new movie, Red State, at a specific website. (Quotes from his Twitter statement later at the end of this piece)
Apparently his anti-press mode worked. Tickets for his new, unpublicized movie, were going like hot-cakes at the Sundance Film Festival last weekend as tickets for the event were showing up in multiple forms of scalping and the movie was put in-play at the 1200-seat Eccles Theater, which according to sources, was jam-packed.
Warning: The following has language that is Not Safe For Work or young ones!
As you know, I enjoy quality short films, aka indie films. One of my favorites right now is Project Arbiter which will be coming out someday soon! When I hear of one, I check it out and if it sparks my imagination in any way, I’ll put them up and chat about them and let people see what I’m talking about. This next short film, called Lazy Teenage Superheroes (LTS), is great little 12-minute piece of work, that for $300 to produce, is incredible. It ranks incredible from the cost to quality ratio. And it is a great piece of entertainment for a 12 minute break from the day’s routines.
Lazy Teenage Superheroes was created, directed and produced by Michael Ashton and it’s been compared to films like Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. That’s an incredible comparison because despite the quality of what was Scott Pilgrim, a lot of fans could not digest the presentation. This short film is on par with Scott Pilgrim, but can easily be placed in the realm of the real world so it is easier for fans to digest this film while easily accepting the reality of it.
The trailer came out around March of 2010. If you’re a network exec that needs a new member on your team to help with your project, like say uh hum, The Cape, I’d give Mr. Ashton a call, let them take over and give him & his team carte blanche!
It’s been said that 2010 was a down year for Hollywood products with fewer people going to the movies. Never mind higher grosses from 3D movies and such, but it seems that even cable TV has lost subscribers. Are folks getting tired of things as they are? Are they tired of having 3D forced on them. (OK, it’s really their choice, but it is a new product that seems to be bleeding out all over the place in different venues.)
I know from my pack of Static buds that some of them have dropped cable in favor of buying TV series on DVD… no commercials and it costs them less over the year compared to the amassing of cable fees they see in their bills.
But even though we would all love to point to our favorite issue as part of the cause, ie: loud commercials, too many commercials, ad riddled web content, costs, 3D prices and such… I think I’m going to go one step further and stick with one thing… LACK OF ORIGINALITY from Hollywood. (Isn’t that funny, that we pay for a service, and then allow the distributor to make even more money off us and let them put ads in that service?)
This is an SoB exclusive: First look at the never-before seen Lego based Project Arbiter Minifigs. (And a look at a very very cool tee-shirt!)
Project Arbiter, from the mind of Michael Chance, is a story set in 1943 during WWII about an experimental O.S.S. unit that finds a prototype battle suit. A battle suit that can render the user invisible. It’s a 20+ minute short indie film, that in my opinion, when finished sometime in early 2011, will kick some butt when all is said and done.
In the meantime, Michael Chance & staff are doing some final touches with post-processing of Project Arbiter. Just today they announced that they have brought Ryan Leach (Skinning, A Way with Murder, The Dark Knight, Bee Movie. TV: Cold Case, Close to Home.) on board as the official composer for Project Arbiter.
Despite the project coming together as they work on their dialog editing, sound design, final mix and other such bits, Michael is really excited about one aspect of the movie that is more about the collectible aspect than the production: The Project Arbiter Custom Minifig, from Amazing Armory.
Something wicket this way comes… as in looking wicked good! Project Arbiter is not due out for a while yet, but just hang on to your horses. This World War II Sci Fi epic is coming.
Studios seem to be making a statement with their opening movies about the Halloween weekend and there is very little coming out in theaters this Friday. Either that or Saw 3D is such a huge threat that no one wants to go up against it!
That’s fine by me because that means the two newest movies that are big in the eyes of the beholder right now are Paranormal Activity 2 and Saw 3D, or if you are counting, Saw 7! This should be an interesting slug-fest a the box office!
Saw 3D has a great advertising campaign as it embraces the idea of 3D and shows the moviegoer getting sucked into the movie and sharp objects flying off the screen at them. It’s a better campaign than most, I’ll give it that!
