j.j. abrams

Brusimm Cinema Static TV NewsLately, I’ve been veering away from TV news on upcoming projects. I just don’t have the kind of time that one man needs to cover a lot of it… but this one, I could not resist.

NBC has ordered a dramatic thriller from J.J. Abrams and Eric Kripke called Revolution.

As far as I’m concerned, these two combining to put something together goes beyond thrilling for this kid! If you’ve seen the CW’s series, Supernatural, starring Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, then you know what I’m talking about. It’s a great show.

Revolution takes place in a world where all forms of energy have disappeared and we follow some characters who are struggling to survive this situation and attempting to reunite with loved ones.

Bryan Burk (Fringe) will be executive producer.

I already can’t wait to see future TV news about this project and who they’ll start casting for roles.

(Sorry… I’m all fan-boying about this one!)

I finally caught the first 3 episodes of Alcatraz on Fox.  I have to say that it is interesting and written well enough to be a wee bit engaging.  Even with its flaws.

Alcatraz on Fox

TV Review:

Alcatraz comes to us from Elizabeth Sarnoff (Lost, Deadwood), Steven Lilien (Kyle XY), Bryan Wynbrandt (Kyle XY) and is executive produced by J.J. Abrams.

The cast includes Sarah Jones (Sons of Anarchy), Jorge Garcia (Lost), Jonny Coyne, Parminder Nagra (ER) & Sam Neill.

The premise of Alcatraz is that back on March 20th, 1963, everyone on the island disappeared.  Now, here in 2012, the folks who disappeared seem to be returning.  And that’s not good.

The interesting thing is that there’s an organization that has already been set up and expecting the inmates to be returning.  Their advanced office of equipment is set up under the prison and is run by Emerson Hauser (Neill).  Lucy Banerjee (Nagra) is his partner and Jones plays detective Madsen who gets herself recruited to their team.  She tags a comic book writer to help her, who also happens to be an expert on Alcatraz history (Garcia).

So each case of the week has them hunting down the newest perp who has reappeared and doing what they do best, is evil stuff.  We watch the perp do his deed here in the present, but we also get flashbacks to their lives back in the 60′s.  It’s some filler, background material giving us their motivation, if there’s motivation to be understood.

PhotobucketHere’s the gang at Comic-Con 2011, meeting, greeting and signing things fans brought by…

And once they do catch their man, Hauser transports them to a new version of Alcatraz, somewhere off in the woods.  This is where they’re putting all the inmates they reclaim.

Alcatraz on Fox

I just heard on my local TV news program that Fox’s new hit show, Alcatraz, is starting to cause a stir at the real Alcatraz, here in the Bay Area.

Now even though I have yet to watch the new TV series season premiere of Alcatraz, I’m already writing about it, and I guess, to some degree, I’ve just been spoiled!  Do’h!  The show is from J.J. Abrams, and starring Sam Neill, Sarah Jones and Jorge Garcia, the series is about time-displaced crooks that disappeared way back when, and are now starting to mysteriously reappear today.

And for some reason, folks are thinking the real prison has clues and secret rooms for them to find, in relation to the TV series.

Brusimm Cinema Static Movie NewsI think you all know that Peter Weller has signed on with the cast of J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek 2 movie.  Right?

Weller fans are happy, but now the curiosity turns to wondering if he’ll take up the role of Kahn  (Yes, Kahn.) or some other character.  Hints include that he’ll be playing a C.E.O. of some sorts.

Down Another Rabbit Hole of Thought:

Some think that Abrams reviving Kahn in his reboot is a cop out.  But then again, I thought the reboot going down the alternate time line avenue wasn’t going to pan out and that surprised the heck out of me when it turned out to be damn entertaining.

Star Trek 2‘s Internet Traffic Gold

As we all might know, J.J. Abrams tapped Benicio Del Toro to be a bad guy in his next Star Trek franchise reboot movie.

J.J. Abrams Enterprise in 'Star Trek'

Over the weekend, there was breaking news from Latino Review that Benicio Del Toro will be playing the role of Kahn in J.J. Abrams 2nd Star Trek movie. (Wait… don’t freak yet.)

Then, in a pretty fast move, Abrams gave the website HitFix his personal lowdown on that scoop, saying that this news is not news, but mere rumor and is not true.

Then a few others got on the Twitter bandwagon backing up Latino Review’s inside scoop.

I for one have seen their inside scoops come to fruition more often than not.  They take their scoops serious and don’t just fly off the handle on the first glimmer of news they get.  In other words, they take their scoops seriously.

So to add my voice to the echoes, I’d say that if Latino Review is saying they have scoop, then I’d believe them.

And there’s chatter out there on how Abrams likes his secrets from his movie productions and what not, but that’s just banter.

So for now, that’s the news on the upcoming Star Trek movie.  Plus, I swear, movie studios need to either create better NDA agreements with all the lackeys that seem to leak out information, or just come clean and admit to viral marketing!

Sure… Kahn.  But if you look at what Abrams did with other characters in his first Star Trek franchise reboot effort, he made some characters different and fresh enough to not actually tread on old ground.  If this “alleged” rumor is true, I look forward to Chris Pine yelling, Kaaaaaaaahn.  LOL.

This is the link that started the weekend frenzy:

Back in the middle of 2008, in another life, I had reported on a puzzle house that J.J. Abrams was looking to base a new movie project on.  Today, it’s being referred to as Mystery on Fifth Avenue.

Mystery on Fifth Avenue

This “puzzle house” is a 1920′s era, 14th floor apartment located on upper Fifth Avenue.  What’s unique about this abode that caught J.J. Abrams eye was that the designer of this address, Eric Clough, designed it in such a way to be an entertaining home that has puzzles, poems and such laced within the construction.  Designed to be discovered as time goes on, once the occupants figure out that something is afoot in this Mystery on Fifth Avenue!

It took Clough 4 years to design the $8.5 million (in ’03) place, adding the knowledge of cipher writing, furniture design and architecture into one set of melded skills.

Mystery on Fifth Avenue

But when the new residents were dealing with Clough and talking about basic upgrades, they had no idea that some of his smart ideas were going to turn the place into a huge puzzle, or scavenger hunt.  Everything he added to the residence blended perfectly and when the new residents moved in, they had no clue what they were moving in to.

Cinema Static - TV News, Movie News and other Entertainment news and opinionBelow are two snippets of movie news on the movies Real Steel and the upcoming Star Trek movie…  check it out:

Real Steel Robot Action Movie Clip

If you’re waiting for the Hugh Jackman starrer called Real Steel, a new movie clip was released recently demonstrating some of the robot boxing action we’ll be seeing in the movie.

Real Steel stars Hugh Jackman, a down and out boxer who is contending with the new sport of boxing, where robots do the ass kicking instead of humans.  Part of the story addresses how Jackman’s character has to contend with him being out of a job because of the robots.

Real Steel with Hugh JackmanMe, I’m just waiting for a rock’em sock’em robot joke somewhere in the movie.

Other cast includes Evangeline Lilly, Kevin Durand, Anthony Mackie and more.  The movie is due out this November.

CGI sure has come a long way…

Super 8 from J J Abrams

In a predicted outcome that doesn’t surprise me, Super 8 is being estimated for pulling in $37M in movie theaters this weekend, its opening domestic weekend.  Adding its overseas numbers, it’s looking at a $44 million weekend.  I’m not surprised at these numbers.  We’ve seen a huge viral campaign that J.J. Abrams is famous for, that started with a single camera lens image that then became embedded with clue images.  A viral campaign that engaged many fans into discovering subtle origins information.

We’ve seen many new Super 8 videos pile in on the internet to help engage more viewers with more origins or background material.  I’ve been hiding from these “unlocked” videos, but now I can go check them out.

We also can’t discredit how the movie looked from the movie trailers and clips…   obviously there’s something in the train that wrecks.  Obviously there’s a reason that the truck did what it did.  And that there was a familiar feeling with the core set of characters being kids dealing with an adult scenario.  We’ve been teased and we are curious.

Bruce here… and after getting back from the movie theater, I had to dwell on my thoughts.  There were so many things to say, but I like to keep my reviews brief because I know you folks don’t always have a ton of time…  so below is my movie review of Super 8, thoughts as they poured out of my sporadic brain!

'Super 8' stars Kyle Chandler, Ron Eldard, Elle Fanning and Joel Courtney(And no, they’re not staring at Cloverfield folks!)

Super 8, from writer/director & producer J.J. Abrams, producer Steven Spielberg & distributed by Paramount Pictures is a fun movie that takes you back to the days when high-quality, fun movies were a gem to be cherished when they were encountered at the movie theater.

In a few words, this movie “is mint!” (That will make sense once you see it.)

A Quick/Rough Super 8 Outline

Traditionally, I have never been drawn to movies that focuses on a group of kids at the center of the action, so when I hear comparisons to The Goonies or Stand By Me, they’re lost on me.  When my co-reviewer, who has avoided all media about this movie, turned to me at the end of Super 8 and said this movie reminded her of The Goonies & E.T., that’s a pretty good clue that what everyone else is saying around the review-verse, well, it seems there’s something to the comparison.

But leaving behind comparisons and who is paying homage to what, Super 8 was a pretty fun ride.

Heading into J.J. Abrams & Steven Spielberg‘s Super 8, I had previously questioned if & or when we’d be seeing Slusho in Super 8?

Slusho

I’m actually slapping my head because I had so much fun watching Super 8 I forgot to look for Slusho!  But alas, because of wonderful site readers like Kelly, we were apprised of when Slusho did in fact show up.

According to Kelly who left this comment at my original post asking this question we had one sighting where…
