jason momoa

In this movie review of Conan the Barbarian, I get to share my pain with you my reader.  You see, I finally got to see Conan The Barbarian.  The movie stars Jason Momoa, Stephen Lang, Rachel Nichols, Ron Perlman and Rose McGowan.  And to be honest, I think the best part of this movie is the movie one-sheet below!

Conan the Barbarian one sheet

I’m glad I didn’t drop money at the movie theater on this beast and I’m not sure if I didn’t spend too much on the Comcast VoD rental fee!

Conan the Barbarian is depressingly directed by Marcus Nispel from a script pulled together with duct tape by Thomas Dean Donnelly, Joshua Oppenheimer and Sean Hood.

Nispel’s next movie project is titled Pacemaker… Too little, too late.  This script needed one now.  Donnelly and Oppenheimer both scripted Dylan Dog: Dead of Night. (What? You ask?) And A Sound of Thunder.

-

Conan The Barbarian brought nothing new or original to the screen and came across as a bit of a low-energy experience.  And its box office tally shows just how low-energy… with an est $70M budget and a $21M payday, to date, domestically.

I’m not even sure I can recommend it as a rental, unless there’s a huge sale or discount somewhere.

WonderCon Changes Cities

WonderCon logoFirst up, in case you had not heard the news/update, is that WonderCon has moved!  Zoinks!  It used to take place in San Francisco and did so up until this last event in the beginning of this year.  This last event was their best ever attended WonderCon venue in Frisco, where it’s been held for the last 6 years, but now, it’s time to move onward.  I’ve never felt crowded in at WonderCon, but now they’re headed to Anaheim, to the largest convention center on the West Coast.  These are my old stomping grounds which is pretty exciting for me!

Next year, WonderCon will he held at the ANAHEIM CONVENTION CENTER on March 16th to 18th, 2012.  Sweet, I have an entire lifetime of memories down there and I know exactly where I’m headed to eat!  HA!  On top of that, the latest news is that J. Michael Straczynski was just added to their guest list.

With the event moving to Anaheim, if there’s one that that location will offer, is food and lots of it.  Up in San Francsico, there wasn’t a lot for everyone to enjoy.  Locals know where to go and there was a Buca di Beppo, right (almost) next door.  They became very familiar with me there for that weekend!

So I guess we’ll all now meet up in Anaheim!  Right next to Disney Land!

Below are some pieces of news or trailers from events at 2011 Comic Con… including panel bits from HBO’s Game of Thrones, Underworld: Awakening, Thundercats, Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

Comic-Con News from Cinema Static

Game of Thrones Comic Con News

At the Game of Thrones Panel, which had George R. R. Martin (moderating) and Lena Headey, Peter Dinklage, Jason Momoa, Emilia Clarke, Kit Harrington, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau with show creators David Benioff & D.B Weiss.  The gang let it be known that in the upcoming season we’ll get to see the dragons grow up and more dire wolves this season.

It was noted that we probably won’t be seeing one book per season, as that won’t balance out from book to book.

The DVD package won’t have deleted scenes from the season 1 because they used everything.

A funny bit: There were a few good moments of levity, but one that I remembered, was a question tossed out to the panel, asking how they would end “A Song of Fire and Ice?”

Peter Dinklage suggested a dance number.

I’m sad I missed the Fright Night panel with director Craig Gillespie & actors Colin Farrell, Anton Yelchin, Imogen Poots, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and surprise guest moderator Chris Sarandon. Screenwriter Marti Noxon was also on the panel.

In this remake, it would seem that we’ll learn more about Jerry’s (the vampire) background… remember, he’s a predator.

Cinema Static Divider - TV News, Movie News & Various Opinion

Guillermo del Toro‘s alien/monster fantasy movie that we’ve all been drooling a bit about, Pacific Rim, now has a release date, as it will find its way into your local movie theater on July 12th, 2013.

Pacific Rim, from Legendary Pictures, so far, has been denied as the next Godzilla flick but does have some cast… Charlie Hunnan (Sons of Anarchy).

If you haven’t heard by now, Stargate SG-1′s Ben Browder landed a role in the movie, Bad Kids Go to Hell (BKGTH). He’ll be playing the character Max Rainwater.

Bad Kids Go to Hell is a movie based on a comic book title based on a bunch of kids that, while in detention, conduct a seance and, well, all hell breaks loose!

Ben Browder also has a web series in development that could see the light of day in 2012, called Naught for Hire. It’s based in a world “where even the simplest machines have opinions — and act on them.”

Christopher Judge

I miss Christopher Judge‘s character, Teal’c. I would have loved to have seen him in a series with Jason Momoa and had them go out and kick some wraith’s butts. But we have to settle for snippets of Judge here and there….

Since Stargate, he’s had a spot on NCIS: Los Angeles, had a role in the project called Paradox, played a voice role in Dead Space: Aftermath and had a role in a movie called Rehab.

In the meantime, you can now keep track of what he’s up to because he’s jumped on the social network on both Twitter and Facebook!

Jason Momoa and Emilia Clarke in 'Game of Thrones'

Just yesterday I was saying that I didn’t see any developments on new roles that Jason Momoa might be picking up.  Bzzzz.  Today, there’s news.

Jason Momoa has been cast as a bad guy named Keegan in a Walter Hill (Alien franchise movies, upcoming Prometheus) project.  The project has been called Headshot, but apparently that name is changing, so we have to keep a tight eye on what it will be called somewhere down the pipe.

Momoa will be in a cast that includes Sylvester Stallone, Sarah Shahi, Sung Kang and soon to be many more!

If you’ve been watching HBO’s Game of Thrones, I’m betting that though Jason Momoa‘s script lines as Khal Drogo were limited, you probably enjoyed the terse-worded barbarian role.  (I loved the development of his little strong-willed wife, Daenerys!)

Jason Momoa as 'Conan the Barbarian'

True, I think fans might have enjoyed his Ronon Dex persona from Stargate Atlantis more, what with some a-kicking and vocabulary to boot, but Momoa fans will take what we can get.  Am I right?  Though for me, I think it’s a waste of  a resource to not have Jason have dialog.

But now that the first season of Game of Thrones is over, (Notice how smooth that was, not giving anything away for the DVR or DVD viewing fans?), where can fans get their Jason fix?

If you’re headed to Comic-Con, Jason Momoa will be on the Game of Thrones panel slated for July 21st.  He’ll be sharing the panel with David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, Emilia Clarke, Peter Dinklage, Kit Harington and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.  That should be an incredibly popular panel!

Well how do you like them apples!?  The season finale of HBO’s Game of Thrones first season has come and gone.  With that finale were mixed feelings from fans, but for the most part, I hope they were good feelings.

Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones is produced by Grok! Studio, and is written by David Benioff (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), D.B. Weiss and George R.R. Martin.  What fans are just discovering about Game of Thrones is that the author of the book series this show is based on, George R.R. Martin, is that Martin likes to kill off characters we end up liking.

Martin’s writing is such that he makes characters rather compelling, either way.  We’re compelled to hate them or love them.  But so far it would seem we’re enthralled with the series.

The following will have spoilers if you’re waiting for things to come to DVD/Blu-ray or on DVR.

Now I’ve never read the books, but obviously like you, fans find themselves shocked at times and now, we can no longer take any character for granted.  Thus, making them more valuable to the viewer.  Now, every episode has viewers on eggshells, wondering.

Sean Bean in 'Game of Thrones'

When Eddard Stark (Sean Bean) found himself beheaded, it traumatized fans to the point of making ill-conceived threats to HBO like never, ever watching their network again.  But that wasn’t an HBO call, that’s what George R.R. Martin does to readers.
