DC Entertainment landed a press release in my inbox at around 5:30 A.M. today (Feb 1, 2012) announcing a series of prequel comic titles based on the Watchmen franchise, called “Before Watchmen.”  Check out the thoughts and details we have on it, here from the Cinema Static column on Brusimm.

Watchmen movie and comic book series

The 2009 Watchmen film, to me, is a wonderfully detailed and gritty movie that takes a look behind the scenes of what it’s like to be a vigilante superhero.  It took a look at their lives behind the scenes and introduced us to the idea that not all heroes are perfect.  They have their…   issues.

Working in an alternate timeline did not hurt the movie at all, but rather, helped the movie going world become a part of what was built up within the franchise of the Watchmen to gain a better foothold on fans’ imaginations.

(And yes, I’m not mentioning the comic book series by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons that came out in 1986/87 that was the source of the movie, Watchmen, because I never read it.  My only exposure to the franchise is via the Warner Bros. Pictures movie that was directed by Zack Snyder, and starred Jackie Earle Haley & Jeffrey Dean Morgan, amongst many.

Oh, hey, Michael Rosenbaum fans…  keep your eye out for his name with one of the movies below!

As far as box office top-10 contenders, there might be one or two movies that might give Real Steel a run for its money!  I can’t predict what movie-goers will flock to, but I’m going to guess that The Thing might pull some shape-shifting weight during the weekend to give the robot fighting drama movie a good bout in the ring.

Movies Opening Friday, Oct 14th:

•      The Thing

This is a prequel to the 1982 John Carpenter movie, The Thing, starring Kurt Russell.  In the first movie, it, the alien, had already had its way with another camp before it moved in to the camp that we watched events take place in.

In this prequel of the same name, we’re looking at the discovery of the alien ship and the distinction of how different people react to it.  Some stay fast on their course of study up in the ice, while others focus on the alien.

Come on!  Who wouldn’t focus on the alien?

Directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr., whose sporadic resume does not instill enthusiasm, the cast of this film includes Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Ulrich Thomsen, Eric Christian Olsen, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Paul Braunstein.

The Thing is distributed by Universal Pictures.

•      Footloose

This movie looks like, and this is just my observation from the trailer, but a completely unoriginal remake.  The previews look almost exactly like the original… scenes and heck, even the clothes in the trailer remind me of the original.  But we’ll see how well its received at the box office.

Directed by and co-written by Craig Brewer (Black Snake Moan, Hustle & Flow),  the cast includes Kenny Wormald, Julianne Hough, Dennis Quaid, Andie MacDowell & Miles Teller.

Footloose is from Paramount Pictures.

Over on Collider, they posted their Joel Silver interview and in that interview they touched on the upcoming project Lobo. In the interview Silver said they made a screen test. Jeffrey Dean Morgan on Playing Lobo

October 14, 2009

In passing, Jeffrey Dean Morgan had shown interest in being the big blue Lobo, but in actuality, he’s not sure he’s quite right for the part. At least that’s what he says. Yet, one thing Morgan did say was: “Hey, if Guy Ritchie came to me and said, ‘You want to do Lobo?’ I’d say, [...]

There’s conjecture going on out “on the street” what actor would make a great rendition for the upcoming Lobo project that’s being produced by Joel Silver, et al..
