Dale Earnhardt Jr during Daytona Preseason Thunder at Daytona International Speedway on January 12, 2012

Did you know that at one point Dale Earnhardt Jr. was thinking about moving his JR Motorsports operation into the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, but believe it or not, he cannot do that while he’s driving for Hendricks Motorsports, of all things!

In a (weird) set of rules that (I think) should really be non-exclusive to each other, NASCAR has inadvertently put the ix-nay  on Dale Earnhardt Jr. moving into the Sprint Cup Series.

Mike Helton made the point that

“if a driver owns a team but drives for another organization, then the total number of cars for both organizations counts toward the four-team cap.”

Which to me, initially makes absolutely no sense in how the Hendricks Motorsports team cap should affect JR Motorsports desire to field a Sprint Cup Series team.

NASCAR News: Danica Patrick Update

I’m sure you are well aware, but juuuust in case you aren’t, Danica Patrick announced that she is leaving the IndyCar Series and coming to the NASCAR Nationwide Series full-time in 2012, driving for JR Motorsports.  She will also be looking to tackle a few Sprint Cup Series races in 2012… approximately eight to ten of them, with Stewart-Haas Racing.

Danica Patrick signs papers to finalize her full transition to NASCAR

Danica Patrick noted that her eye is on a full-time Cup ride in 2013, but it seems will play it by ear and things are still to be determined.

Patrick said that ever since she stepped into that ARCA ride back in 2010, the NASCAR bug had bitten her.

NASCAR News:  Danica Patrick coming to NASCAR!

Dave Moody on Sirius XM is chatting up the story that Danica Patrick is indeed coming to NASCAR, starting her career in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, with sporadic Cup Series starts.

Scene Daily is also confirming that Ms. Patrick is indeed finalizing her contract with JR Motorsports Nationwide team and Stewart-Haas Racing for her Cup starts.  Whoa!  Look out Ryan!!!

It looks like Danica is walking from her IndyCar ride at the end of 2011 and coming to the other side of the fence where cars can actually touch each other during a race and not lose a wheel doing it!

In the short term, this will be great exposure for the Nationwide Series.  It will bring new, fresh blood that has a huge popularity factor to it.

Is Danica Patrick really coming to NASCAR for a full time tackle at one of the series? I do start this article with a question mark because I am questioning this news bit. I’ve never really taken her seriously as a NASCAR contender, not because of ability but from the dabbling between NASCAR and her full-time ride over in IndyCar racing. Plus, for me, I have a hard time taking anyone seriously when they seem to “model” more than they drive.

Don’t get me wrong. I’d love to see a woman crank it out and do well in any racing series. But like all things that are group endeavors, it’s a team event that makes something good or not. Between the crew, the spotter and the driver, any team, any driver is subject to the whole of the process. I won’t even go into the luck aspect of the process, which includes parts failure or on-track carnage that a team can get caught up in.

The one thing I’d absolutely love to see is Danica Patrick winning a race, outright. That would settle it for me. By outright, I mean under green, under power, bumping tires to the checkers.

Earlier this week I saw an article addressing Danica Patrick moving to NASCAR full-time. I love crediting originating sources before everyone else re-distributes the news, but I can’t seem to find the link I thought I bookmarked! Grr…

Danica Patrick NASCAR No 7 GoDaddy Car

JR Motorsports says that they expect to field another Nationwide Series car for Danica Patrick in 2011. All they’re doing is waiting for the season schedule from her “day job” over in IndyCar to be publicized so they can schedule her rides around that.

So far Danica Patrick has had a bit more of a rough go at it with her best finish being 24th and her average finish just over 30th.

It would seem that Dale Earnhardt Jr. will also be driving the No. 7 car when Danica isn’t filling the seat.  They have other potential candidates, depending on sponsors stepping up or not.

Remember, JRM will be having Aric Almirola driving the No. 88 car next season with GT Vodka and possibly Unilever as the two sponsors sharing the hood.

Aric Almirola to JRM

-

Marty Smith of ESPN reported that Aric Almirola will start driving for JR Motorsports (JRM), starting in 2011, with the possibility of maybe getting some seat time in the late part of this, the 2010 NASCAR Nationwide Series season.

The contract is a multi-year deal.

Good for him. I think he deserves this chance and I have a gut feeling he’ll show folks just how much of a wheel-man he is.

Danica Patrick

Danica Patrick will be returning to Michigan this weekend to participate in the NASCAR Nationwide Series race on Saturday. She’ll be placing about 25th in the JR Motorsports No. 7 Chevy… if nothing breaks on her car. (Oh, did I just make a prediction?)

This is the 6th time she’s going to hijack the media focus and hopefully she’ll do better than expected  Right now, she sits 11th in points in the Izod Indy Car Series.

Sadly, I’m still not convinced she’s serious about NASCAR, but heck, we’ll take anything to liven up the day!  (I apologize for the interjected snark…  I guess.)

Danica Patrick in the Jr Motorsports No 7 Chevy

Danica Patrick is returning to man (oops) helm the wheel of the JR Motorsports No. 7 Chevy this Saturday at the NASCAR Nationwide Series race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway at Loudon, New Hampshire.

For some, this is exciting news.  For others, it’s a blip on the radar that is more annoying than informational.  Me, I’m still not a total believer in her NASCAR efforts, but I’m leery that way.

No matter what side of the coin you sit, she’s here and with her, comes this massive marketing machine that can’t seem to be stopped.  Regardless of her performance behind the wheel.

The curiosity of wanting to see a woman do well behind the wheel of anything brings fans in droves.  Simple as that.

For what it’s worth.

Danica Patrick

The following is a NASCAR press interview with Danica Patrick.

In it, Danica talks about her double duty challenge, on the IRL coming to New Hampshire, racing at New Hampshire in the Nationwide Series and her expectations there, how she feels about running at PIR, coming to Michigan after driving there in IndyCar, on whether she’s staying in touch with NASCAR when she’s off in her IndyCar job. She also touches on whether her NASCAR double duties could be hurting her IndyCar performance.

Check it all out below!

THE MODERATOR: Good afternoon, everyone. We’re pleased to be joined today by special guest Danica Patrick, driver of the No. 7 GoDaddy.Com Chevrolet for Junior Motorsports. Danica is back with NASCAR after a four-month absence coinciding with the start of the IZod IndyCar Series season. She has three Nationwide Series races to her credit this season at Daytona, Auto Club Speedway in Las Vegas. And after New Hampshire, she’s scheduled to make nine more NASCAR Nationwide Series starts this season.

Thank you for joining us today. You’re doing sort of your own version of double duty now with open wheel and stock cars. How do you think the transition is going to be coming back into NASCAR after this little break? And have you had any opportunities to reacquaint yourself with the stock car before this weekend?

DANICA PATRICK: Hi, everybody. Thanks for coming on. Yeah, I really am not concerned about — there’s nothing that sticks out where it’s something completely, you know, something different that I have to prepare for.

I don’t know. It’s really hard to answer how the transition will be, because it’s going to be what it is. And it’s kind of unknown. And I’ve started doing more stock cars, and then went to Indy cars. There wasn’t much overlap, necessarily. But there was some testing in amongst. But I’ve gone back and forth, I guess you could say, between the two.

And they’re just so different that you don’t get confused, you know? So I’m just looking forward to it. I’m looking forward to getting back to the team, to the fans, to the paddock and everybody in it.

Everybody was so nice when I first came into the series at the beginning of the year. So I’m just really looking forward to seeing everybody again.
