New Movies at the Box Office from Cinema Static 2011 logo 475w lq

This week, the celebrities showing up in new movies this week include Gina Carano, Channing Tatum, Bryan Cranston, Cuba Gooding Jr., the leather clad Kate Beckinsale, Tom Hanks, Gerard Butler, Ralph Fiennes & Christian Bale!  Plus, with the Sundance Film Festival getting in full swing, there’s a bunch of indie movies being presented to the alternative and mainstream press this week.

And from looking over the list of new movies this week, it’s going to be tough to pick one to catch this week!  (Remember, enough of you can chime in at the comments, saying which movie you want me to go see…  you can end up sending me to one of these movies this Friday… be nice!)  Dont’ forget, I also update some select movie titles production status down below this section…

Check it out and see what new movies are coming out on Friday, January 20th, 2012:

•      Haywire

Haywire movie poster

Haywire stars Gina Carano, Michael Angarano, Channing Tatum, Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas, Ewan McGregor and  Michael Fassbender grace the screen during this movie.  That’s an incredible collective of celebrity power!

This action movie is directed by Steven Soderbergh (Contagion, Solitary Man, The Informant!) and written by Lem Dobbs (The Score, Dark City).

It’s about a black ops secret agent who has been betrayed… and it’s time to fix things.  (Kind of like Bourne, but a female version of him!  I could love this movie.)

Looking at the preview trailer, they show her doing a lot of leg work to kick butt, which seems fairly realistic.

This looks fun… did you catch Bill Paxton in there?

•      Red Tails

Red Tails movie poster

Red Tails stars (the soon to be venerable) Bryan Cranston, Daniela Ruah, Joshua Dallas, Cuba Gooding Jr., and more in a movie during the WW II era, about a group of African American pilots in the Tuskegee training program being called to duty under the guidance of Col. A.J. Bullard.

It’s directed by Anthony Hemingway (Treme, CSI: NY)…

If anything, this is an awesome era to have a top-notch production company put together a WW II aerial battle movie.  What I see here looks awesome visually!

New Movies at the Box Office from Cinema Static 2011 logo 475w lq

If you like planning your holiday outings, and part of those plans include going out to the movies, I thought I’d slap together a list of what new movies will be out in the month of November and what will be coming out for the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend.  Just in case you or your family get it in your minds you might want to hit up the movie theater during that time…

Thanksgiving is taking place on Thursday, November 24th.  (That’s a duh, but being thorough here!)  If you check out the new movies coming out in November, leading up to and may still be in theaters by Thanksgiving day.  You might find one of your favorite actor or a movie you knew was coming out soon.

You can also check back early each week as I produce a weekly piece pointing out all the new movies for that week.

From what I can tell, here’s what I think might be the top-10 movies coming out in November:

•      The Son of No One
•      J. Edgar
•      Immortals
•      The Descendants
•      The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1
•      Melancholia (Limited openings)
•      Happy Feet Two
•      Hugo
•      A Dangerous Method
•      The Muppets

Cinema Static - TV News, Movie News and other Entertainment news and opinionI was tooling around looking at the different movies and their production status.  Since I was digging around, I thought I’d slap some of what I saw out here…

This week a few movies changed their production status so the list of movies and their production status changes a wee bit as to what they’re up to, but here is where several movies, like The Expendables 2, The Hunger Games, The Dark Knight Rises, The Avengers and such stand.

Eliza Dushku fans will be happy to see she’s in a film on this list… if it makes it to filming.

Remember, development could be anything from, “Hey, I have an idea!” to a script written and submitted for someone to think “Hey, this is a good idea!”    As a great example, the vapor movie that Microsoft seems will never move on, Halo, is listed as “in development.”  You do the math.  Some films have chances and some films aren’t even in the running.  I’ve tried sticking to those that have had the most media and look like they’re a go.

-

Movies in Development

·     The Fast and the Furious 6
I’m sure that once production starts on this film, that the premise of Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson being attached will help it do well in the anticipation department as well as the box office!

·     Ghostbusters III
From the cast listing, it looks like the old gang is back in a job (in every sense of the word,) as Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson are noted as attached, as well as Joss Whedon favorite Eliza Dushku.

·     Jurassic Park IV

·     The Wolverine
Word on the street was that they were going through some script rewrites.

·     Untitled Star Trek Sequel

Since Inception came to HBO, I thought I’d watch it… again… and again… and…  well, you get it.  But this time around, with the ending of the movie fresh in my mind, I watched the project continually applying my observations or questions from the ending, to each act, scene and action taken by the characters.  And yes, I think I need some counseling when this was all said and done.

Inception was brought to us by Christopher Nolan, who wrote, directed and produced (Along with his wife, Emma Thomas) and starred Leonardo DiCaprio as Cobb, Marion Cotillard as Mal, and Ken Watanabe as Saito, amongst others.

Christopher Nolan directing 'Inception'

The movie’s basic premise takes place in a world where technology exists that allows people to enter other people’s dreams to obtain information.  In most examples, it’s corporate information that is sought after and experts at such a mental ruse are folks like Cobb.

I’ve previously noted in my first Inception perception on the ending that I felt that Cobb did not want to come out of a dream so that he could finally be with his kids.  I thought that he gave up.  I even added a quote from Nolan who said that the way he ended the movie, cutting away from the spinning top during a wobble, felt like the appropriate kick to end the movie on.  Kick?

Once I get an idea in my head, it won’t go away until it’s set right.  While I was writing my previous article, something came to me, but I finished out the other piece first.  That other idea was what if Cobb was never in the real world during the movie?  What if everything was just in his head and we were never in the real world?  What if something already happened that trapped him in this delusional dream state?  That’s how I started looking at the movie the last time I watched Inception.

If there’s anything anyone in marketing knows, it’s that the first and last impressions have the most impact, usually. The first impression keeps you around.  The last impression more than likely will influence your overall feelings about an event.  And to be honest, those closing moments in Christopher Nolan‘s Inception definitely left an impression with this movie-goer!  But with that completely ambiguous ending that contain multiple possibilities, exactly what do we think happened there?

Production still of Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Berenger, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Cillian Murphy and Ellen Page in 'Inception'

'Inception' - Everyone's taking their afernoon nap!

Here are my thoughts, presented as tersely as possible so as to not take up too much of your valuable time.  Do you think I hit the head on the nail or what?  I’d love to hear your thoughts afterwards…  [And if you still haven't seen the movie, heads up!  There are spoilers in here.]

I just watched Christopher Nolan’s mind-bending masterpiece called Inception again… I think.  Unless the first time was a dream!   It’s a movie about dreams that can be manipulated via outside intervention and the premise is crazy enough, but to start messing with the dreams inside of dreams and such could have been a very complicated premise to deliver.  Yet Nolan created such a world within the movie that the premise was a very digestible concept to follow.

Movie Still of Leonardo DiCaprio and Marion Cotillard in 'Inception'

But as the movie came to a close, we believe (were shown) that Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) achieved his personal goal of being pardoned for his crimes in the U.S. and reuniting with his children.  But I have to ask, did he really?

Bones TV Series Spin-off

-

News on the web is that Fox is looking to create a spin-off series from the David Boreanaz & Emily Deschanel starrer, Bones.

The spin-off isn’t coming from anyone we’ve met in the show yet, but from a new character they’ll be introducing in the December 6th episode called Walter Sherman, and will be recurring thereafter.

The spin-off may or may not happen, it all depends on the actor snagged for the role.  The character will be skeptical of everything, constantly asks irrelevant and offensive questions and has quite the ability to be able to find anything.

Eh…  I get moving to a spin-off from a known commodity, but that last time Fox tried to create a spin-off from an new character they were introducing didn’t pan out at all… remember the PI from House?  And what’s with this House-like personality trait?

Eh, we’ll see how it goes and who they get.  [ TVGuide ]

Inception DVD

Inception which was written, directed and produced by Christopher Nolan and stars Leonardo DiCaprio.  It is a tale that exists on multiple levels of entertainment…  just like the multiple levels of dreams the cast of characters invade.

Inception is about tampering with the dreams of people to extract information or implant information & ideas. The movie describes dreams so on-point it makes your eyes go wide as you find yourself saying “yea, that’s it!” to yourself.

Despite the movie starting out complex, it explains itself quickly and is an easy flick to keep up with.  The movie is delivered in a very smart fashion.  You can see what I thought of it in my movie review of Inception.

INCEPTION L-R Leonardo DiCaprio and Christopher Nolan

L-R Leonardo DiCaprio and Christopher Nolan on the set of Inception

Leonardo DiCaprio is making a huge name for himself in the entertainment industry and I’ll explain why I’ve said this, in this quick Cinema Static Personality Focus!

The first time I took notice of Leonardo DiCaprio, was in James Cameron‘s 1997 movie, “Titanic.”  Whether that was THE launch project that put him in the limelight or any of the 11 previous hit movies he was in that helped launch him there, I’d say it was the cumulative effort on his part.  But if there’s one thing for me, he’s cemented his iconic status in Hollywood with Christopher Nolan‘s Inception!  Regardless it’s curious to see that he’s had a true Hollywood beginning, as Leonardo DiCaprio was born November 11th, 1974 in Hollywood, CA.

Leonardo DiCaprio in TITANIC

Leonardo DiCaprio in TITANIC

You might remember him from the 1990 TV series “Santa Barbara” in the 5 episodes as the Young Mason Capwell, or as Luke Brower in the 1991 TV series “Growing Pains.”  But from TV, he seemed to focus purely on movies.  His first credited movie is “Critters 3,” landed his “Growing Pains” role just after that and since then, he’s been seen in 20+ movies.
