Over the last few months, there’s been speculative news that Matt Smith is leaving Doctor Who. But a few weeks after the initial report, there’s been a flurry of press bits being pumped out denying that he is leaving.
He is contractually obligated to fourteen more episodes of Doctor Who.
But while everyone is wondering about Matt Smith, we now learn that the Doctor’s companion actors, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill are leaving the Doctor Who production.
They will be back for the next upcoming season, but they’re headed out the door and the next season will be both actors’ final season.
{What is it with the turnover on this series?}
Steven Moffat teased that the end for their characters will be a heart breaking end.
This chunk of news bites include TV news about the Doctor Who Christmas Special, a reboot of a classic, The Munsters; and an incidental piece about Kevin Smith’s Red State.

First up…
Doctor Who Christmas Special Preview
For the Doctor Who fan, if you were wondering about the Christmas special coming up, we have a little bit of news for you…
The Doctor Who special is called “The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe” and will air on Christmas Day at 9 p.m. on BBC America.
It takes place in World War II here on Earth and it follows one Madge Arwell and her two kids. During the war they are evacuated to an old house located in Dorset. The curious bit abou tthis old house is its caretaker… a mysterious young man who wears a bow tie. With this strange young man is a big blue parcel is waiting for them under the tree. They are about to enter a magical new world and learn that the Time Lord (Matt Smith) never forgets his debts.”
But wait, that’s not all of it. BBC America isn’t just having a sole Doctor Who Christmas special.
Beginning on December 23rd, BBC America will start their Doctor Who telecasts by showing past Christmas specials. On Christmas Eve, they’ll air the special, Doctor Who: Best of The Christmas Specials.
Doctor Who: Best of The Christmas Specials will be an inside look at past specials, with fans of all kinds chiming in and discussing their favorite moments.
When I first saw this note about David Yates wanting to direct a Doctor Who movie, I saw it long before anyone else was spun up about it, more than 24 hours prior to writing this. Now, at the time that I put this together, there are 16 pages of Doctor Who results as everyone pings off of everyone else about this news.
But the news seemed hopeful at best and with the project slated to being a few years off, I said “meh” to myself. I’ll wait and see how that really develops.
But then one site got ahold of it, a few others saw them, then others and so forth and so on. This piece now has a life of its own. So be it.
The movie news for the TV show Doctor Who said that David Yates, who had directed the last four Harry Potter movies, and TV shows like State of Play & The Bill, has been tapped by BBC to help develop a Doctor Who movie with Jane Tranter, the boss of the Los Angeles office of BBC Worldwide Productions.
It seems that the newest Doctor, as in Doctor Who, is looking to different pastures come the post 2012/2013 season. Or, in plain, non-tricky English, Matt Smith is leaving Doctor Who. Or so the speculation goes.
The article is based on a VH-1 interview where, in the interview, Smith is quoted to saying:
“I’ve got another year of Doctor Who,” he said, “but then I’m certainly going to come and give it a shot, come and hang out in LA.”
They hang other conjecture on a slip up in another interview where he said
“When I finish [Doctor Who], I’ll be…” he paused at this point, seemingly realizing that he was about to give something away, “Well, I don’t know how old I’ll be, but by the end of next year I’ll be 29 so…”
Over the last few seasons of Doctor Who, starring Matt Smith, we had the opportunity to encounter the enigmatic and spoiler free Dr. River Song (Alex Kingston).
When we first met her in Doctor Who, The Doctor encountered her in the nick of time. He had lost or broke his sonic screwdriver, but there she was, with his sonic screwdriver.
It was confounding and mysterious, all at once.
And then through the last couple of seasons, each encounter with River Song, new clues were dabbled out to the viewers. And through the episodes, we were treated to various aspects of her life, in a fragmented sort of time line.
And another episode of Doctor Who, the season finale, starts out with their trademark collective of obscure pieces of story pulled together to start the episode off. (It’s very late, I’m very tired. I hope this makes sense.)
It will all be explained… and if you can survive the confusion that is Doctor Who, it all starts to make sense by about the half-way point, usually. Except in this case, for me, it only started to make sense in the last 10 minutes. And I had a full explanation of of everything in the last 4 minutes.
The season finale of Doctor Who, starring Matt Smith, is upon us. And the teaser trailer that precedes the season finale is rather interesting.
The previous episode (last week) of Doctor Who answered the question of who was in the astronaut suit at the beginning of this sixth season, the episode titled “The Impossible Astronaut.” We’ve also seen a few other answers along the way about many things that were presented to us in that season premiere episode.
(I’m being vague in the event some readers have DVR’d the season and have not yet seen the show.)
The following news bits came from the Comic Con panels for The Vampire Dairies, Supernaturaland Doctor Who. This article closes out all my notes from last weekend and now, I have to sort out my pictures from the weekend and go from there… Comic Con pics coming soon! -
The Vampire Diaries
The Vampire Diaries Comic Con panel really didn’t produce much news… just really great banter amongst the panelists:
The panel included Joseph Morgan, Nina Dobrev, Ian Somerhalder, Candice Accola and Paul Wesley. Exec producer Kevin Williamson was also there.
Another panel birthday at Comic Con, this time the crowd sang happy birthday to Paul Wesley.
Speaking of Wesley, he said he’ll be enjoying embracing the darker side of Stefan.
Dobrev said she likes playing both characters. Something about the nest of both worlds.
We have not seen the last of Elijah.
Damon is not happy how things are turning out at the moment.
