Below are some random NASCAR news bites about David Reutimann, David Ragan, Johnny Benson, Kasey Kahne, Mark Martin, and a quickie on Robby Gordon’s Dakar Rally run!

NASCAR News and opinion from NASCAR BITS & PIECES on Brusimm.com

After getting ousted by Michael Waltrip Racing, David Reutimann landed on his feet, so to speak, and landed a ride with Tommy Baldwin Racing, joining Dave Blaney in that Sprint Cup stable.

David Ragan at the 2011 AAA Texas 500 - QualifyingDavid Ragan was another driver that landed on his feet after being ousted by Roush Fenway Racing.  Ragan will be driving for Front Row Motorsports for 2012.  He’ll now be the teammate to David Gilliland.

Not his best shot at fame and glory, w/ no disrespect to the team, but I think we’ll be seeing his name every weekend anyway.

Bob Jenkins owns the team.

-

Last time I heard, though Johnny Benson was plotting a return to the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series in 2012, it appeared as if the deals he was hoping for fell through, and he will not be competing in the 2012 season.

NASCAR News and opinion from NASCAR BITS & PIECES on Brusimm.comThis could be very, very interesting, considering how Leffler tends to be sometimes behind that wheel.  And well, ’nuff said on Kyle’s intents for 2012.

Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM) announced today that Jason Leffler will be the primary driver of the team’s No. 18 Tundra in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series for the 2012 season. The veteran driver will be behind the wheel for at least 14 races this season, beginning with the season-opening race at Daytona International Speedway. Dollar General, the nation’s largest small-box retailer, will serve as the primary sponsor for Leffler’s 14-race schedule.

KBM will be making an announcement about their Nationwide Series program this upcoming Thursday.

NASCAR

This weekend NASCAR is in Florida at Homestead.  Three different championships are being decided this weekend.

The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series championship was decided in the Ford 200 on Friday night…  Johnny Sauter won the race, followed by Denny Hamlin, Kevin Harvick, Nelson Piquet Jr. and Joey Coulter rounded out the top five spots.

But more importantly, the 10th place finisher, Austin Dillon, won the Truck Series championship, taking it by 20 points over 2nd place finisher Johnny Sauter.

For those who might live in a cave, Austin Dillon, who drivers the black No. 3 Chevy truck, is the grandson of Richard Childress.  He was last years’ Rookie of the Year in the Truck Series.

CONGRATULATIONS to Austin Dillon, the 2011 NASCAR Camping World Series champion!

-

In the Nationwide Series, that championship was decided early in the race in the Saturday night event (11/19/11), the Ford 300, saw Brad Keselowski win the race, but the 2nd place finisher of the night, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. won the championship, 41 points over Elliot Sadler.

CONGRATULATIONS to Ricky Stenhouse Jr, the 2011 NASCAR Nationwide Series Champion!

-

These two champions were made possible by the new rules put into place by NASCAR where drivers had to choose which competitive series they were contending for the championship in.  This made it possible for the full-time drivers in each of the Truck and Nationwide series to have a shot at winning titles, versus the Cup drivers who would moonlight in these series, taking titles from the contenders hoping to make a mark in the world of NASCAR.

Now they can.

-

Now that these other two series champions have been decided, that leaves Sunday’s Ford 400.  By all statistical standards, the Sprint Cup Series title seems to be waiting for Carl Edwards to win.

Kyle Busch wrecks Ron Hornaday Jr

I know it’s hard to believe, but there was a race or two that took place after Kyle Busch‘s over-reacting dump of Ron Hornaday Jr. in Friday night’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Texas Motor Speedway.

After being parked for the weekend, NASCAR has gone ahead and fined Kyle Busch $50k and has placed him on probation for the rest of the year, until December 31st, 2011.

If during the rest of the season, Kyle Busch does anything that…

“is deemed by NASCAR officials as detrimental to stock car racing or to NASCAR, or is disruptive to the orderly conduct of an event…”

He could be suspended indefinitely by NASCAR.  This, I presume, will over over Kyle for all three series.

NASCAR News and opinion from NASCAR BITS & PIECES on Brusimm.comIt was reported Friday that Kevin Harvick‘s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series team of two trucks was purchased by Eddie Sharp Racing.

Eddie Sharp Racing is making it possible for everyone on the teams to retain their jobs.

Kevin Harvick will still run the truck series team for the remainder of the 2011 NASCAR season but then he gets to concentrate on his Cup career from 2012 and on.

I’m glad to see him have the truck team line up a new owner.  It’s a good, competitive team and the entire ensemble deserve to continue on as they have been.

Whether or not the old KHI team melds into Eddie Sharp Racing and retains that “it” factor they have now is something to be seen for the 2012 season.

Regardless, it’s good news for all.

It was a stunner when I heard the news a few hours ago, that Kevin Harvick‘s NASCAR race team, KHI, will be seriously consolidating back into it’s original purpose, and that is to market Kevin Harvick’s brand.  To be honest, I’ve always looked at this team as one that will age with the sport and to always be watched, for as long as I will be a fan!

Kevin Harvick Inc no 33 Truck with Ron Hornaday

This consolidation includes shutting the doors on his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series team garage and of course, the older news, that they’re consolidating his NASCAR Nationwide series team with RCR.

One of the phrases that stuck with me from the announcement was that the present business structure wasn’t working for the truck team.  And that got me to thinking and worrying for the sport as a whole.  But that’s another article!

On consolidating the KHI NASCAR Nationwide program:

Cup and Nationwide cats are so similar that it didn’t make sense for KHI to be building their own cars.  Basically, he noted that it’s difficult to keep up with the Sprint Cup affiliated teams.  Hence, the merger with RCR next year.

Wednesday’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Bristol was, well, what Bristol could be… frustrating for some and a victory for others.  While Kevin Harvick wins another one, Kyle Busch rants as usual.

NASCAR news and opinion

Another Kevin Harvick Truck Win

Kevin Harvick showed up and took the victory at Bristol’s O’Reilly Auto Parts 200 Truck Series race.  Johnny Sauter finished 2nd, followed by Todd Bodine, James Buescher & Timothy Peters.

[nascar.com: results_unofficial]

This was Kevin Harvick’s third consecutive truck race… and his third consecutive Truck Series win.  You do the math.

-

But despite the win, there was one grumpy Kyle Busch in the garage after the race.  It seems he and Elliott Sadler ended up trading logo paint during the race, with Kyle getting the worse end of the stick, where Elliott Sadler finished 9th Kyle finished… hang on, I have to keep scrolling down the results page here… AH!  Kyle Busch finished 30th out of 36 entries, with only 100 laps to his credit.

But then the the focus of the Sadler vs. Busch fender scuffle turned into a Busch hating-on Harvick affair.  Though Sadler was not driving a Harvick owned entry during the race, during interviews, Busch made the reply about the altercation, saying “Where does his paycheck come from?”  I guess he was hinting that maybe Kevin might have persuaded Elliott to rough him up.  I don’t know, am I that far off the NASCAR anger mark?

Seriously?  Later Kevin Harvick said it’s pretty silly to associate the scuffle with Busch’s laser-hate focus on him and attributed it to Kyle not being happy that he wrecked and did not win a race.

NASCAR Sprint Cup Quaker State 400 Qualifying

I love this new rule.  When rain preempted the latter half of Sprint Cup qualifying, NASCAR had to set the field for the first-ever race at Kentucky Speedway.  But unlike previous years where the field was set by points, NASCAR is now setting the field  per practice session speeds.  NB&P likes that!

With that said, Kyle Busch (polesitter) and Juan Pablo Montoya are sitting on the front row and will be leading the pack to the green flag of the inaugural NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Kentucky Speedway, the Quaker State 400.

The front row is immediately followed by

Kurt Busch & Kasey Kahne;
Jimmie Johnson & Brad Keselowski;
Carl Edwards & David Ragan.

Boxing Gloves for Richard ChildressRichard Childress has had enough.  After the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race on Saturday, Kyle Busch had rubbed up one of Childress’s race trucks after the checkers and Richard Childress had enough.

According to sources, Richard Childress took off his watch (It must be a real expensive piece), went over to Kyle Busch and put him in a headlock and hit him a few times.  Busch curled up on the ground to get away from it.  (That seems on par with what we’ve seen to date from KyBu. The other week he kept driving away from Kevin Harvick.)  Then when he got up to get away from Childress, and he found himself roughed up a little bit more. (At least this description was what was available via various media.)

Per Marty Smith on a Saturday night ESPN telecast, he doesn’t think that this latest altercation will reflect on Busch, being that he’s already on probation for his chicken*t stunt he pulled at Darlington with Kevin Harvick.

Today The Daly Planet reported after a press conference that

No penalties for Kyle Busch, but sanctions and penalties coming for Richard Childress. Here we go.

And later added

Dave Moody says RC must stay on or in his transporter. Cannot come to pit road or the garages. That should be fun.

Yesterday culminated a two-day test for Kimi Raikkonen and Kyle Busch Motorsports at the Gresham Motorsports Park in Jefferson. Ga..

According to the team’s press release, the testing in the shops Toyota Tundra’s went very well with 400 laps of testing completed.

General Manager Rick Ren said that for being unfamiliar with the truck or the track, Raikkonen did a great job.

Kimi Raikkonen said he had a fun time and is really looking forward to his first NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race.

Boy, from the sounds of things, it seems like Kimi may be the next biggest threat to the Truck Series and beyond.
