Dale Earnhardt Jr during Daytona Preseason Thunder at Daytona International Speedway on January 12, 2012

Did you know that at one point Dale Earnhardt Jr. was thinking about moving his JR Motorsports operation into the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, but believe it or not, he cannot do that while he’s driving for Hendricks Motorsports, of all things!

In a (weird) set of rules that (I think) should really be non-exclusive to each other, NASCAR has inadvertently put the ix-nay  on Dale Earnhardt Jr. moving into the Sprint Cup Series.

Mike Helton made the point that

“if a driver owns a team but drives for another organization, then the total number of cars for both organizations counts toward the four-team cap.”

Which to me, initially makes absolutely no sense in how the Hendricks Motorsports team cap should affect JR Motorsports desire to field a Sprint Cup Series team.

Below are some random NASCAR news bites about David Reutimann, David Ragan, Johnny Benson, Kasey Kahne, Mark Martin, and a quickie on Robby Gordon’s Dakar Rally run!

NASCAR News and opinion from NASCAR BITS & PIECES on Brusimm.com

After getting ousted by Michael Waltrip Racing, David Reutimann landed on his feet, so to speak, and landed a ride with Tommy Baldwin Racing, joining Dave Blaney in that Sprint Cup stable.

-

David Ragan at the 2011 AAA Texas 500 - QualifyingDavid Ragan was another driver that landed on his feet after being ousted by Roush Fenway Racing.  Ragan will be driving for Front Row Motorsports for 2012.  He’ll now be the teammate to David Gilliland.

Not his best shot at fame and glory, w/ no disrespect to the team, but I think we’ll be seeing his name every weekend anyway.

Bob Jenkins owns the team.

-

Last time I heard, though Johnny Benson was plotting a return to the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series in 2012, it appeared as if the deals he was hoping for fell through, and he will not be competing in the 2012 season.

Rusty Wallace Inc

As odd as it may seem, a race team is taking a break from competition in NASCAR.  Rusty Wallace Racing announced last week that it is taking a hiatus from the NASCAR Nationwide Series.  The team fielded the No. 62 and 66 cars in the series.

Rusty Wallace said that despite having some great sponsors lined up for 2012, it was a more prudent move to take this break because they still did not have sufficient backing to try and achieve the goals they had in mind for the upcoming 2012 season.

RWR fielded cars with Michael Annett and Steve Wallace, Rusty’s son.  Arnett was let go last week.

Rusty is still looking to work on something for his son

NASCAR

This weekend NASCAR is in Florida at Homestead.  Three different championships are being decided this weekend.

The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series championship was decided in the Ford 200 on Friday night…  Johnny Sauter won the race, followed by Denny Hamlin, Kevin Harvick, Nelson Piquet Jr. and Joey Coulter rounded out the top five spots.

But more importantly, the 10th place finisher, Austin Dillon, won the Truck Series championship, taking it by 20 points over 2nd place finisher Johnny Sauter.

For those who might live in a cave, Austin Dillon, who drivers the black No. 3 Chevy truck, is the grandson of Richard Childress.  He was last years’ Rookie of the Year in the Truck Series.

CONGRATULATIONS to Austin Dillon, the 2011 NASCAR Camping World Series champion!

-

In the Nationwide Series, that championship was decided early in the race in the Saturday night event (11/19/11), the Ford 300, saw Brad Keselowski win the race, but the 2nd place finisher of the night, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. won the championship, 41 points over Elliot Sadler.

CONGRATULATIONS to Ricky Stenhouse Jr, the 2011 NASCAR Nationwide Series Champion!

-

These two champions were made possible by the new rules put into place by NASCAR where drivers had to choose which competitive series they were contending for the championship in.  This made it possible for the full-time drivers in each of the Truck and Nationwide series to have a shot at winning titles, versus the Cup drivers who would moonlight in these series, taking titles from the contenders hoping to make a mark in the world of NASCAR.

Now they can.

-

Now that these other two series champions have been decided, that leaves Sunday’s Ford 400.  By all statistical standards, the Sprint Cup Series title seems to be waiting for Carl Edwards to win.

NASCAR News and opinion from NASCAR BITS & PIECES on Brusimm.comAfter last weeks NASCAR debacle with Kyle Busch, the world is in an uproar and being split in half.  There are those that had no problem with what he’s done or his tactical behavior leading up to that, (aka, his fans) and there are those that never took to his ways and more or less, hate Kyle Busch.  Nah, that’s a strong word.  How about, have no tolerance for Kyle Busch’s practices.

Now today, it was announced that Kyle’s NASCAR Nationwide Series sponsor, Z-Line, asked Joe Gibbs Racing to replace Busch with Denny Hamlin in the Nationwide series finale race at Homestead.

I know it’s only one sponsor, and this isn’t related, but it’s starting to feel like a Tiger Woods thing all over again with how sponsors have to worry about their bottom line.

-

Then today on SiriusXM, Dave Moody started talking about Z-Line’s Facebook page.  It seems that, per a non-scientific survey done by Dave Moody, 50% of the comments on the Facebook wall say,

The Closing Laps of the The Great Clips 300 Race

NASCAR News and opinion from Brusimm.comWith 19 laps to go, the final green flag flew, with Carl Edwards leading the pack to the next lap.  Brad Keselowski was mired in traffic while Elliott Sadler, with a few lap fresher tires than everyone else tried to capitalize on that.

Edwards started to pull away from the pack, but then the No. 6 car of Ricky Stenhouse Jr. worked his way into 2nd and looking like a strong threat in this Nationwide NASCAR race.

With 12 laps to go, Carl Edwards had a 1.2 second gap over Ricky Stenhouse Jr..  But then Kyle Busch‘s beast started to come to life and with 7 to go, it was Edwards, Busch and Stenhouse Jr..

The fastest car title swapped off between Edwards and Busch… as Busch was struggling to get his first NASCAR Nationwide Series win at Atlanta.

Kenny Wallace in the No .09 car, pulled off the pace, his radio being overheard that his drive-train is broken.  “I promise.”  Is what we heard on the radio traffic.

NASCAR News: Danica Patrick Update

I’m sure you are well aware, but juuuust in case you aren’t, Danica Patrick announced that she is leaving the IndyCar Series and coming to the NASCAR Nationwide Series full-time in 2012, driving for JR Motorsports.  She will also be looking to tackle a few Sprint Cup Series races in 2012… approximately eight to ten of them, with Stewart-Haas Racing.

Danica Patrick NASCAR News Conference

NASCAR News

The NASCAR Nationwide Series has been getting itself much media attention of late.  Between the crazy invocation a few weeks back before a race; the GoDaddy driver, Danica Patrick, going full-time, and Travis Pastrana delaying his debut until 2012, they’ve had some great, notable news entries.

But last weekend’s Nationwide Series race at Iowa Speedway is one for the books.

NASCAR news and opinionIn the closing laps of the U.S. Cellular 250, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. was leading to the checkered flag and on the last lap on the straight-away, his engine blows.  Hot on his tail was Carl Edwards.

I guess cousin Carl was pushing it hard waiting for something to happen and got into just riding along and then Ricky’s engine starts to smoke, rather than getting around him, the smoke was enough to block his vision, and Edwards slams into Stenhouse Jr and pile-drives him across the finish line first.

What a crazy finish.

-

A question though.  I thought a car had to be under its own power to have its finish count?  Eh, this was probably fine as is.

NASCAR News: Travis Pastrana

If you were hoping to catch the X Games athlete, Travis Patstrana, break out a new gig this year in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, don’t hold your breath.

NASCAR news and opinion

Pastrana Waltrip Racing announced that due to his recent injury, Travis is now looking at 2012 for the year to break into the Nationwide Series.  His injury involved a broken foot and ankle, in which he received during an X Game compeition in Loas Angeles a few weeks ago.  He had surgery on his injury last week.

Travis Pastrana said in the team release that it would make more sense to wait until the 2012 season than to push for a late season, minimal race schedule, late in 2011.
