Check it out and make your plans:

Cinema Static Top-10 Movies & Box Office NumbersThis weekend, the new movies that hit the box office Friday populated the 1st, 3rd and 5th place spots in the chart of top-10 movies.

According to estimates, The Grey with Liam Neeson will be the lead money maker in the top-10 movies by the time the weekend is over, pulling in $20 million in it’s opening weekend, dominating the other movies by almost double.

Trailing The Grey is a movie in its second week in movie theaters, Underworld: Awakening, which  dropped by more than half from it’s opening weekend, will pull in an estimated $12.5M this weekend.

In third place in the charts is the new Katherine Heigl movie, One for the Money.  Apparently Heigl doesn’t have the draw they’d like her to have and the movie only pulled in $11.7M in ticket sales in its first weekend out. Hmm, no wonder she dropped the soundbite about wanting to return to Grey’s Anatomy.

Outside the top-3 in 4th, is Red Tails with Cuba Gooding Jr.Red Tails dropped nearly 50% from its opening weekend too and pulled in just over $10M.  But still hung on to a spot in the list of top-10 movies.

The new movie Man on the Ledge starring Sam Worthington seemed to have very little draw compared to the other top-4 movies, pulling in an estimated $8M.  Ouch.

New Movies at the Box Office from Cinema Static 2011 logo 475w lq

This week’s new movies coming out in theaters on Friday, January 27th  include celebrities like Liam Neeson, Katherine Heigl, John C. Reilly, & Sam Worthington.

With this collection of new movies this week, I think there might be competition for the no. 1 spot at the box office.  The newest Underworld chapter found itself getting trashed by critics but the fans flocked to see it anyway.  So I’m wondering if word-of-mouth is going to take its toll on this new “Beckinsale in tight leathers” movie? (That wasn’t a complaint… I’m just sayin’._)  We’ll see, right?

After the list of new movies is a selected list of what movies are in what state of production update…  and as always, if you leave enough comments/requests to check out a new movie, I’ll go see it for you guys!

•      The Grey

An airplane crashes in Alaska, stranding an oil drilling team, as they struggle to survive, as a pack of wolves stalks them.

It stars Liam Neeson and a wolf, and is directed by Joe Carnahan, whose past credits include The A-Team, & The Fourth Kind.  That says to me that the action could be pretty decent.  Another data point that I consider is that Howard Stern says he likes the movie.  Believe it or not, I trust his movie opinions, as they’ve tended to agree with mine over the years… so I may head out to see this, this weekend!

New Movies at the Box Office from Cinema Static 2011 logo 475w lq

This week, the celebrities showing up in new movies this week include Gina Carano, Channing Tatum, Bryan Cranston, Cuba Gooding Jr., the leather clad Kate Beckinsale, Tom Hanks, Gerard Butler, Ralph Fiennes & Christian Bale!  Plus, with the Sundance Film Festival getting in full swing, there’s a bunch of indie movies being presented to the alternative and mainstream press this week.

And from looking over the list of new movies this week, it’s going to be tough to pick one to catch this week!  (Remember, enough of you can chime in at the comments, saying which movie you want me to go see…  you can end up sending me to one of these movies this Friday… be nice!)  Dont’ forget, I also update some select movie titles production status down below this section…

Check it out and see what new movies are coming out on Friday, January 20th, 2012:

•      Haywire

Haywire movie poster

Haywire stars Gina Carano, Michael Angarano, Channing Tatum, Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas, Ewan McGregor and  Michael Fassbender grace the screen during this movie.  That’s an incredible collective of celebrity power!

This action movie is directed by Steven Soderbergh (Contagion, Solitary Man, The Informant!) and written by Lem Dobbs (The Score, Dark City).

It’s about a black ops secret agent who has been betrayed… and it’s time to fix things.  (Kind of like Bourne, but a female version of him!  I could love this movie.)

Looking at the preview trailer, they show her doing a lot of leg work to kick butt, which seems fairly realistic.

This looks fun… did you catch Bill Paxton in there?

=

•      Red Tails

Red Tails movie poster

Red Tails stars (the soon to be venerable) Bryan Cranston, Daniela Ruah, Joshua Dallas, Cuba Gooding Jr., and more in a movie during the WW II era, about a group of African American pilots in the Tuskegee training program being called to duty under the guidance of Col. A.J. Bullard.

It’s directed by Anthony Hemingway (Treme, CSI: NY)…

If anything, this is an awesome era to have a top-notch production company put together a WW II aerial battle movie.  What I see here looks awesome visually!

Cinema Static Top-10 Movies & Box Office NumbersLast weekend consumers decided to give some power to he three new movies last weekend and put them in the top-4 spots amongst the top-10 movies at the box office last weekend.

Estimated numbers:

Number One Movie At the Box Office

Contraband showed that Mark Wahlberg can switch hats from his executive producer hat (Boardwalk Empire, Entourage) to his acting hat (The Other Guys, Date Night, The Lovely Bones) and still draw the fans in to the movie theater for his new movies.  He does have that pull on you and he can pull off an action role pretty awesomely.  (Is that even a word?  LOL)

Contraband movie poster

Contraband, from director Baltasar Kormákur (Inhale, A Little Trip to Heaven), pulled in just over $24M at the ticket window, averaging almost $8.5K per theater.  Yea…  the fans like Wahlberg!

-

Beauty and the Beast 3D movie poster

The 1991 animated classic, Beauty and the Beast, was re-released in 3D this last weekend and showed that classic movies that are close to the heart can still have an interesting draw when slapped out in the 3D theater…

Beauty and the Beast drew in almost $18.5M at the box office, which surprised me.  I was sure it would do OK, but I wasn’t sure it would be such the hit to be the No. 2 movie in America.

This brings the movies’ overall worldwide tally to $378M.

Sure, it’s a 3D release.  Sure, they’re just adding money to their coffers by taking advantage of your heart strings, but A: It worked, B: Animated features in 3D can be awesome.

Did any of my readers see this in 3D?  Was it any fun in 3D?

Hey, at the very least, you get to take your kids to the same movie and give them the experience you had once when you were young!  Right?

New Movies at the Box Office from Cinema Static 2011 logo 475w lq

The new movies coming out this week include Val Kilmer, Ray Liotta, Gina Gershon, Ron Eldard, Dennis Quaid and Aimee Teegarden!

-

Wednesday, January 4th:

This Wednesday, Breathless, starring Val Kilmer, Ray Liotta and Gina Gershon comes out.  It’s directed and co-written by Jesse Baget (White Knight).

It’s categorized as a thriller, but the production company calls it a dark comedy.

Breathless is a dark and violent story that follows Lorna (Gershon) a strong-willed Texas woman who’s had enough of her untrustworthy husband Dale’s (Kilmer) criminal acts and lack of husbandry and looks up an old friend to help figure out what to do about this.

Tell me that movie trailer doesn’t look creepy?

Cinema Static Movie News and Thoughts 200wWell, it’s a new year and the perfect excuse for everyone to compile their lists of likes, dislikes and what not, whether it be from 2011 or looking forward into 2012.

Let’s take a peek at 2012, shall we?

New movies that we’re looking forward to in 2012 include:

- The Hunger Games 3/12
- The Cabin in the Woods 4/12
- The Avengers 5/12
- The Dark Knight Rises 7/12
- The Amazing Spider-Man 7/12
- The Bourne Legacy 8/12
- G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation 8/12
- The Expendables 2 10/12
- The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 12/12
- Django Unchained 12/12

That’s my short list of movies, that if push comes to shove, are the movies I will be catching in the movie theater.  With that said, let’s look at a bit of a lengthier list… shall we?

Coming out January 20th is Underworld: Awakening.  I love this franchise, but you haven’t seen much coverage for this new chapter of the franchise because of a  C&D request the studio sent me, that I’m over-reacting to.  So I haven’t said much on the movie since then.

-

Katniss and Peeta character sheets from THE HUNGER GAMES

The Hunger Games (3/23/11), directed by Gary Ross and starring Jennifer Lawrence, this movie is what I’m looking forward to.  The books were rather compelling.  This first chapter that comes out in this movie will be (I’m hoping) incredible.  It seems such so far.  I’m not sure how they’re going to sell the 2nd movie, if this one does well enough.  But only because there’s more of the same, so to speak.  And four movies, three books?  I presume they’re going to draw out the last book and make part 1 and part 2, like a few other movie franchises have done.

Of late, though I’m confused a bit about this newest movie still released by the studio.  There was much bru-ha-ha about it, but it was only a still from the movie trailer that was already released.

Not sure what that was about, but everyone loved having something to say or add to their collection of The Hunger Games posts.

-

Wrath of the Titans (3/30/12), directed by Jonathan Liebesman and starring Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes and Sam Worthington, all reprising their roles.

If I’m not too busy or what not, I’ll probably check out Wrath of the Titans, which is the sequel to the remake of Clash of the TitansClash was fun, but nothing to write home about.  It had incredibly exciting movie trailers that built a lot of excitement, but the trailers, as they were designed, seemed more thrilling than the movie was.

But I’ll probably catch this at the movie theater.

-

Joss Whedon has a few movies coming out this year.

Whedon announced his Much Ado About Nothing, but not sure when that’s coming out in 2012.

His much delayed twist on the horror thriller, The Cabin in the Woods, is coming out on Friday, April 13th.
