First up, some box office noise:

BATTLESHIP Almost Takes The Weekend Box Office, NOT!

I think some of the headlines referencing this last weekend are bit harsh or overplayed about the box office this weekend.  They seem to claim a failure at the box office for Battleship‘s domestic opening weekend.  But, if it weren’t the the super-huge Joss Whedon mega-hot, The Avengers, it looks like Battleship might have won the weekend in the box office.  But The Avengers took in another $55M this weekend, remaining in the top spot at the box.

Battleship was number 2, pulling in just over $25M and The Dictator dictated into third in the charts with a $17M take.  Dark Shadows ($12.8M) and What to Expect When You’re Expecting ($10.5M) rounded out the top-5 spots at the box office.

The Hunger Games is holding on to a spot in the charts at seventh, having pulled in $3M this weekend, adding to it’s worldwide gross, bringing it to $392M.

Cinema Static Top-10 Movies & Box Office NumbersMovie,           Weekend,     (Total)
The Avengers     $55.1M     ($457M)
Battleship     $25.4M     ($25.4M)
The Dictator     $17.4M     ($24.5M)
Dark Shadows     $12.8M     ($50.9M)
What to Expect When You’re Expecting     $10.5M     ($10.5M)

People are trying to over-analyze why Battleship didn’t do so good, declaring lack of interest by teens.  I’m thinking a Marvel(ous) movie might have taken most of their business away!  But that’s just me.

New Movies at TheatersIt’s still a quiet week for new, opening movies at the box office, and rightfully so, as The Avengers continues to traumatize the competition while stomping Chitari butt.  Right now, the ensemble superhero team movie has ammassed 25 different box office records while just recently surpassing $1B worldwide in box office tallies.

This is what last weekend looked like at the box office for the top-5 earners:

  1. The Avengers         $103M;
  2. Dark Shadows         $29.7M;
  3. Think Like a Man     $5.82M;
  4. The Hunger Games     $4.51M;
  5. The Lucky One         $4.11M.

Here’s the list of what’s not taking the No. 1 spot at the box office this weekend, thought these movies are opening this Friday, May 18th, 2012:

•      Battleship
•      What to Expect When You’re Expecting
•      Hysteria
•      The Samaritan (limited)
•      Crooked Arrows
•      Virginia

'Battleship' movie poster

Yes, Battleship looks more of a guilty pleasure kind of fun, popcorn movie.  It’s already generated a 6.4 user score on IMDb, (It opened overseas already) and so, despite the critical dis-acclaim by some professional reviews, if it’s playing at the right time of day for me, I’m going to hit it up in theaters this Friday.

The cast includes

  • Taylor Kitsch
  • Alexander Skarsgård
  • Rihanna
  • Brooklyn Decker
  • Tadanobu Asano &
  • Liam Neeson

(Joining Kitsch from Friday Night Lights is Jesse Plemons.)

The director is Peter Berg… how put together via exec producing, writing or directing, some other popcorn fun movies like The Losers, Hancock, Lars and the Real Girl and The Rundown.  He was also exec producer for Friday Night Lights (TV series) and Prime Suspect.

I’m not caring with professional critics say.  Berg has helmed in one way or another a few movies and TV series that have stuck with me as standing out for one reason or another.

I’m giving Battleship a chance.
