priest

'Priest' movie posterI’ve been a bit under the weather this week and was debating if I wanted to actually use what energy reserves I have to go see Priest in my local Century 20 Downtown Redwood City and XD theater, but alas, after checking out the website Movie Review Intelligence, I think I might save my energy for another day.

Of the new movies at the box office this weekend, Bridesmaids is getting a surprising 84% positive reviews while Priest is only pulling in 41% positive rated reviews.  But then I noticed that there are only 4 reviews for Priest while Bridesmaids has 45 reviews.

Does this indicate that there were no early screenings for Priest from the studios?  That’s never a good sign to me.  I cruised the ‘net to see what was out there and what I saw was…

IGN says

“Priest offers enough action and cool bits to probably hold the interest of most 14-year-old boys, but its hodgepodge story and overall derivative nature make it feel like a movie that should have come out back in the ’90s.” [3.5 / 5]

New Movies from Cinema Static 2011 logo 475w lqLast week saw Paramount Pictures Thor open in the U.S. to the tune of a $66 million weekend.  3D theaters accounting for 60% of that take.  Fast Five dropped their take from the previous weekend and pulled $32 million, down 62% from their opener.

This week, new movies opening at the box office include the man who was behind the voice of Iron Man‘s Jarvis, Paul Bettany, while Kristen Wiig graces the silver screen in her opener…  we’re also seeing Antonia Banderas in a new mystery thriller while Natalie Portman, yet again, is in a new movie opening this weekend.  That girl is crazy busy!  Will Ferrell fans will be happy to see him in a new movie also/again.

Let’s check out our list of new movies this weekend, opening in theaters:

Priest

'Priest' movie posterIt’s the future somewhere in this Screen Gems movie about a post-apocalyptic sci-fi thriller, is set in an alternate world — one ravaged by centuries of war between man and vampires. The story revolves around a legendary Warrior Priest from the last Vampire War who now lives in obscurity among the other downtrodden human inhabitants in walled-in dystopian cities ruled by the Church. When his niece is abducted by a murderous pack of vampires, Priest breaks his sacred vows to venture out on a quest to find her before they turn her into one of them. He is joined on his crusade by his niece’s boyfriend, a trigger-fingered young wasteland sheriff, and a former Warrior Priestess who possesses otherworldly fighting skills.

The cast of Priest includes Paul Bettany (The Tourist), Karl Urban (Red, Star Trek), Cam Gigandet (The Roommate, Burlesque), Maggie Q (The CW’s Nikita), Lily Collins, Brad Dourif, Stephen Moyer & Christopher Plummer in this Scott Charles Stewart (Legion) directed movie.

It looks like it could be a great and fun action flick at the minimum… we’ll see if it has anything else to offer.  Of the new films, if I head out this weekend, it will be to catch Priest!
